This is my second Kia Niro, the first was a 2017 and my new one is a 2023. No issues with either. 53 mpg around town is a given.

Same here, I had the 2017 Kia Niro EX HEV and getting my hands on the 2024 Kia Niro EX PHEV.
The recalls on it have been pretty minor as far as I can tell and the dealership always told me when I needed to come in for them.

Thank you for this informative video. I like the low roof height of the Niro for carrying my kayaks. it's similar height of my old '09 Subaru Outback. There's also more cargo space in the Niro than the Prius. The hight of the Toyota Cross is on par with the Rav 4 which is a tough haul for a short person. I wish car manufacturers would bring back the station wagons.

I am not sure if the MPGs are same if you compare Corolla cross hybrid and Niro hybrid, i thought Niro gives ~ 51-54 MPG while Corolla Cross ~38 to 45?

I'm helping a 73 yr old single lady find a replacement for her 2008 Hyundai Accent. We drove an Elantra hybrid, Corolla LE FWD hybrid, and a Niro EX hybrid in that order. After driving the Niro she said: "This is the one I want!" It was significantly quieter, smoother, more solid feeling than the other two. I have a 2019 Niro PHEV that has yielded 135 MPGe in 20,000 miles. And it consistently get 10% more miles in EV mode than Kia numbers. A great city car and decent on highway as well. The 2023 is a modest improvement in all regards.

I can throw my mountain bike inside the back of my 2019 Niro hybrid without taking the front wheel off. So far it has been totally reliable, and I would buy a new PHEV Niro in the future, for a lot less than a Prius.

Nice video.. its good to know about the problem with the dual clutch. The thing i like is the sit very comfortable vs the Corolla cross. Well design interior and i like the exterior. I almost bought the plug-in hybrid (because it have more power engine) but i dont really have where to plug-in maybe once in awhile... If this is the case should i go for the hybrid ?

My only disagreement I have with the Prius comparison is that the Prius roof is so low in the back seat as to be simply a bad place to sit for anyone of average size. And then after the Prius, what options are good for a PHEV with decent head and leg room?

It needs to be said, that in Canada, at least, Toyota hybrids are in very short supply. Even if you want one you can’t get one. The Corolla Cross Hybrid is simply automotive vapourware.

I'm sure about the intention of this video? Is this really just a promotion for Toyota?
I drove both Corolla hybrid and Kia Niro hybrid and decided on the Niro. Space is a factor and our ltd Niro hybrid with all the trims out performs the corolla as well as my preference for the dual clutch transmission as opposed to the floaty variable transmission. Fuel economy was marginally better in the corolla but from the overall perspective the Niro hybrid ltd came out on top . This seems rather subjective but this segment on RUclips is no doubt a Toyota promo.

Well, according to CR, Toyota has the top rated quality over everyone else. However, the dealerships I've visited are refusing to drop prices for a Toyota because they let you know that they are the best quality, and you should expect to pay for that fact. I'm a Hyundai fan, driving Kona #2 and two Elantras before that. I do like the look of the Niro PHEV, but their dealer reputation around my area are shoddy at best. Probably just go with Kona #3 when the time comes to lease again.

Went to test drive a Corolla Cross Hybrid and was told that I cannot!!! They are making so few, dealers are selling them before the CC Hybrids are even built! Shame. Oh, and when I was allowed to sit inside one (not drive it), I found it boring, too cramped, and lacking any tech -- Toyota makes you PAY EXTRA for Navigation, while Hyundai/KIA include it, as well as heated AND cooled seats, heated steering wheel, and a big infotainment system, not a 7" micro-tablet.

    • @davidpaisley9949
      @davidpaisley9949 2 месяца назад

I think you will find the space in the Niro about the same as the Corolla Cross. And the back seat leg room will be better. Locally here in Ohio they are easy to find and you can basically buy one off the lot. I helped a freind purchase one in David California back in November. We, test drove it, my friend loved it and we purchased it the next day. The car is not on peoples's radar. @@Steve_in_NJ

Looking for a plug in Hybrid, the Niro seems to fit. It has one of the better all electric range (55km) extended economy of 4.8l/100 and most important i am fairly sure a full sized celtic harp will fit in , which rules out a Prius. The RAV4 Corolla Cross seem to only available in the dim and distant future

Hi Shari! Found this older video (March 2024) and as my crossover shopping is just starting for the fall delivery date, I'm adding the Niro SX Touring PHEV to my list, along with Kona and Corolla Cross Hybrid. I'm deciding whether to go full on EV or PHEV, as I wish Kona had a hybrid version and didn't force you to go to KIA for that option. In my geographical area, all of the KIA dealerships are just awful and get * star reviews for servicing and shady sales on both yelp and Google Reviews. May have to go with Hyundai for that very reason.

    • @carhelpcorner
      @carhelpcorner  2 месяца назад +1

I'm not surprised to hear this. Complaints about poor customer service are common for both Kia and Hyundai. The Niro PHEV itself is a pretty good vehicle, but I prefer the Corolla Cross Hybrid or Prius over it to be on the safe side.

It's a cute car but the small power output in the hybrid, lack of 4 wheel drive option, and clutch make it a no go. I think the hybrid corolla cross is going to be the one to beat in this segment. Wish Lexus made a version of the Cross.

The financial math for the higher cost of the PHEV over the hybrid doesn't work out if you don't get the rebate mentioned in the video. At best it's a wash by the time you're likely to sell the car. A simple thought experiment that gives outrageous advantages to the PHEV shows this:
For simplicity and to tilt the scales heavily in favor of the PHEV, let's assume that you ALWAYS charge at home (reasonable), that electricity costs nothing (impossible) and that you are somehow able to drive in EV mode 100% of the time (also impossible). The gas engine NEVER turns on, so you have zero fuel costs (never ever going to happen, but just for fun let's say you can pull that off).
How far would you have to drive in this fantasy world to break even on the $4500 premium claimed in the video? (PS: as this is written in October 2023, the base MSRP difference is actually $7450... but let's use the information given above).
That depends on the price of gas. To give even more of an advantage to the PHEV, assume that the war in the Middle East blows up and that Russian oil exports completely collapse, causing a 25-30% increase in the price of gasoline (it could happen). Make it $5US/gallon and assume the regular hybrid gets 50 mpg (below the rating) also for simplicity.
$4500 worth of gasoline is 900 gallons at $5/gallon. At 50mpg in the hybrid that's 45,000 miles. Given that electricity is NOT free, you WILL be running the internal combustion engine and gas is NOT $5/gallon, it's not at all unreasonable to double that break-even. 90,000 miles before you stand a chance of offsetting the higher price. Driving 15,000 miles per year (typical for US drivers) that's six years of ownership.... at $5/gallon!
And along the way, the heavier battery pack in the PHEV will make the gas engine work harder (burning more fuel when it's running) and cause the tires and brakes to wear faster.
You can reach the same conclusion a different way. The EPA ratings for the Hybrid are 53mpg combined, and the PHEV 108mpge. At 15,000 miles/year and $5/gallon, the hybrid will cost you $1,415 in fuel. The PHEV will cost $694... $721 less per year. $4500 works out to 6 years and 3 months to break even with gas that high.
Right now gas in my town is about $3.69. Plug that in (see what I did there?) and you get an annual fuel cost of $1044 for the hybrid and $512 for the PHEV... $532 less per year at 15,000 miles. That's about 8.5 years to break even.
If we take the current differential of $7450 US and current real-world gas prices, that rockets up to 14 YEARS to break even. At $5/gallon, it's still more than 10 years.

So have not driven the latest Prius but drove other model Toyotas recently. I agree Toyota has great reliability but my local dealership is a combined Kia Toyota dealership. If you took the labels off the cars and took them out. KIA’s just feel and drive like a much more expensive car. More German like. Toyota feel’s economy and just boring and cheaper. I would like to drive the new Prius and see how that is

This video mis-represented the interior space and cargo of the Niro. For its size, if the Niro's trunk and cabin size is "not mind blowing" then every alternative is trash in comparison.
    HUGE FAIL.
I own 2018 Niro and learned from other videos (not this one) that redesign is slightly more.
For it's class the cabin is huge! Back seat has nearly 3 inches more legroom than a Toyota Rav4. The trunk easily fits larger strollers, luggage, Costco hauls etc. The egress for rear doors are very easy for negotiating child seats. Bonus that there's a vent to keep rear seat passengers comfy.
Also the 51 miles per gallon EPA is legit! I routinely get 49-53 MPG!
As for performance for a daily driver I never feel like I cannot merge safely or overtake another vehicle if needed.
Last thought the HEV has no spare but u can get another full size wheel and tire and will fit in trunk under floor.
I really like your content and agree on your preference for the top Japanese brands. Thing is the Niro has features not available to competitors which is only obvious when you spend time in the cabin.
