- Samantha Grady, a junior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, was wounded during the shooting rampage there Wednesday. She becomes emotional as she tells TODAY that her friend died in the shooting. She describes hearing two shots and huddling with other students when the shooter fired through the locked classroom door. She says it was “an intense moment” when she reunited with her family.

People laugh while they are nervous as well. You cannot blame this girl because she was crying on national television informing them that her friend was dead. She was probably incredibly nervous and probably laughed to hold herself back from completely breaking down.

I sometimes just get paranoid. I try laughing to calm my self down. It works for me. Maybe she smiled and laughed to calm herself down. It is quite awkward to do an interview after your friend has been shot.
Same , once a best friend of mine was going thought hard times so I made a joke , it made her laugh and another one of my friends told me it wasn't funny and wasn't the right time it looks like she doesn't understand my coping mechanism cause I'd rather see a smile on my face or mu friends face than tears. Plus happy thoughts make you forget a bit about the pain

For everyone saying "how does a book stop a bullet" she said "maybe the book deterred some of the bullets?" She didn't say "omg I put the book up and it stopped the bullets and then I started shielding myself like a superhero" 😩 people now a days have no empathy for anyone.

No, if people behind her got shot she would have too. “Some of” = there were so many bullets, at least one would hit her. The only thing she’s implying is that, yes, the book deterred the bullets. It doesn’t make sense. Or maybe she really is THAT out of it.

The news reporter mentioned the book deterring bullets I think maybe the girl panicked slightly due to being on camera and just went along with it. As soon as I heard the reporter say that I felt like punching her.
If you have a couple of hard cover books and use that as a type of shield, the bullet won’t go all the way through so yeah they can stop a bullet..
Awesome job, guys. Let's bring a student who was both psychologically traumatized & physically wounded right back to the scene of where it took place the morning after. Oh, and then let's ask her about her friend who was shot and killed in the incident as the very first question, on national television. Stellar work, really.

I’m actually really proud of these news anchors for being so sensitive to her emotions, cuz I just watched another interview where the lady was really insensitive and loud, even interrupted the teen who had been shot at a few times.
These two hosts actually showed some compassion. Good interview. You are so strong. Keep talking about it. Don't keep it bottled inside. Just make sure it doesn't become the center of your life. We all continue to pray for you young adults and the parents of those who lost their child.

Shock. She’s still in shock. Just coming out of it and will be for quite some time after this. She will be smiling and laughing as a symptom in an effort to control extreme emotions she can’t handle right now.

Um no. I've witnessed the aftermath of a shooting where 8 people died. There was no smiling, no nervous laughter, no jokes, and everyone's eyes were red and swollen and their voices were strained. The victims families just cried for days and days. Their postures were hunched over. They looked and acted as if they truly had their heart broken. This girl obviously didn't care that much for her "friends" she couldn't even fake a tear. And look at her composure! Straight up! Her eyes are pointed down and around, which is a dead giveaway to when a person is lying.

And for your information, she wasn’t joking at all. Anyone saying that this is fake is disgusting and despicable. Everyone reacts to tragedy/terror/horror differently, these kids are in shock, of course they’re acting weird. I work in a place where I have to deal with victims of violence weekly, people act strange when they’ve just gone through something horrific. Everyone says you don’t know how it feels until it happens to you, and I hope this never happens to anyone again...but just put yourself in these kids shoes for two seconds and think of how you would react in a situation like this....you probably have no freakin idea how you would react, so you can’t judge these kids. They all had to watch and hear people die that day, that’s something they shouldn’t have to experienced at such a young age.
