    Our local bluefin migrate out to breed when they reach about 300-350 lbs, so we'll never likely have super jumbo local fish. The good news is that we now have a healthy pocket population of fish that stays year-round and is replenished each spring by smaller fish migrating in from breeding grounds across the Pacific. This should be the new normal as long as we and Mexico manage the fishery well. I was told this by an NOAA fisheries researcher.

    • @ilikedirtx22

      I hope these fish stay in our waters forever

    • @cmonCraig
      @cmonCraig 3 года назад +1

      I've heard the bluefin fishery we have now has a lot to do with the fact that Mexico stopped using bluefin for their canneries. The fish that migrate over from Japan now have the opportunity to grow to that 300+ pound range you mentioned, and Mexico can still catch their quota for their aqua-ranching, which they seem to hit earlier and earlier every year. Next, I hope we can find good management along with the local sushi restaurants here buying from local hook and line commercial guys, rather than flying fish in from Japan

    • @LocalKnowledge
      @LocalKnowledge  3 года назад +1

      We think you are absolutely correct and our science friends agree. Better management and a shift in currents have lead to this amazing fishery. We hope they stay around forever.

    Kite & balloon are like no other, total concentration working it to skip for extended periods of time & then the explosive bite & wind so fast to get the release clip to release, then the massive slack you have to catch up to as fast as you can wind a 50W! But that's just the start as you just winded until your arm wants to stop, then the 35# or so of drag is screaming!!! Once the marathon is over & that monster is on the deck it's a feeling that no one can take away from you! My best was 267# stand up Cali style!

    Wow, I’ve run offshore charters out of Anna Maria island Florida since ‘94. I crewed out of west palm years before. Ali, you mentioned it has been a century since you “had these fish” what DID they blame the decline and eventual absence on? When fish n game talk resource management, how do they explain: first, the obvious incorrect assessment of the loss of the “bio-mass” the more mature fish?
    2nd, why are they back?
    Government agencies form policy based on landings/#of commercial licenses issued etc.
    Then you discover there was a flaw in the information gathered???
    Russ, have you ever tried the “stinky flyer” in the keys? I learned this technique in the late 80’s on a boat out of west palm. I find it fascinating that I was the only guy out of west central Florida to use it. I was the only guy regularly landing sails in my zone with this technique. I simply started doing it around the shrimp boats and it paid off.
    I’m hooked on the show guys and I can’t stand to watch “fishing shows” they contain way to much BS for me.

    • @LocalKnowledge

      It's a cyclical thing as far as we knows. This is the second time in recorded history it's happened. We beleive the strong El Nino in 2015 changed our currents and now our waters hold mega tons of tiny anchovie. This is the preferred food for bluefin (and many other offshore species). There's so much feed in our water the fish stay here and don't migrate back to asia until sexual maturity at about 300#s. We'll pass the note on to Rush. Thanks for the kind words.

      The bite generally is great until the first winter storm blows in which can be anywhere from the middle of October to beginning of November. But each year is different. This being a drought year, I think the first winter storm will be late arriving.

My set up is a calstar GFGR 770xxh with a Saltiga 2 SP ld60 loaded with 100# hollow topped with 100# topshot so I’d love a little info on dialing it in for bigger bluefin

      It's a cats paw leader for changing out wind on leaders. Check the cats paw connection video here on our channel. The set up you have should be good on the rod side. Reel might be a bit small for our liking. I'd start with an international 16 or 20.

    • @LocalKnowledge
