I had a similar experience on a waiting list that long. There's a pretty popular luthier in NY who famously epoxy's fretless basses/guitars, almost like a mirror glass finish. We're just in information overload stages of guitar products. Sure this sounds good, but so do like a million other things. It's almost hard to go wrong at this point. Listening to the playing samples, I feel like I've heard that same tone loads of times, and I can't even remember where/when because it's borderline commonplace.
Almost, but you can go wrong, 15 years ago I bought a Danelectro Corned Beef Reverb pedal (still have the box and paperwork). It is definitely NOT a reverb pedal. More of a tremolo or fixed delay. As someone who has owned a KOT and gigged with one for awhile I can say my first initial impression of the pedal was underwhelming. You don’t notice how amazing this pedal is until you spend at least a month with it and test it at a proper gig. It is the only OD I’ve used that sounds great with ANY amp. It just brings the best out of your amp in so many ways while staying dynamic. It’s definitely not a tube screamer it’s completely different. That being said - if you can’t pay $800 for a pedal there are some other amazing options out there (kingtone duellist is great) but if you want something cheap honestly the tc electronic mojo mojo comes pretty damn close too!
I’m three years into the wait right now. Has been very satisfying to wait and I am looking forward to someday in 2022 or early 2023 getting to order this pedal.
I live in CT and have been to his shop and by far he has the best collection of vintage and esoteric pedals ever!!!!! You gotta check out his shop. Its a mess but in a great way. I bought an ADA phaser from him reissue and what a nice pedal that is if you are looking for dynamics. His own pedals are amazing too. On another note Chris Siegmund of Siegmund amps built me an amp and a one off mic pre I designed, and he recently passed away. What a sad day he was a genius. He made me a field coil speaker for my amp head and if you never played a field coil speaker, you are in for a treat.
The amount of absurd esoteric hype behind Analogman's pedal can get out of control, and Mike plays very well that game, but he did (and still do) some of the best pedals ever. King of Tone is one of them. It is less expensive and faster to get to build it yourself, result can be pretty close, if not identical, but yeah, it's great to have the real deal.
I put my name on the wait list back in 2017 and then forgot about it until I got an email last year. Bought it finally for Christmas and it’s become one of my favorite pedals. Super versatile. I love it!
I literally just got mine a couple of weeks ago. I waited all 4 years. It’s a really cool pedal. Totally worth the price if you’re not in a hurry. I wouldn’t overpay for one.
I had a similar experience with the KoT. At a time when the idea of paying $300 for a drive pedal just seemed insane to me. I plugged it in and thought "oh, THAT'S why people spend $300 on drive pedals." Amazing pedal! Still one of my favorites. 👍
Tyler the KOT has tone filters and dip switches in the back of the pedal, you can adjust these to get different sounds. The KOT is a sweet pedal and worth the wait, just not worth the price gougers asking price. I've met Analog Mike, hes a nice guy who works hard on all the pedals he makes. Check out some other analog man pedals as well.
I used to own one (back when the wait list was 2 years, which I waited for). It was a good pedal, I miss it. Not sure if it's worth the wait list though. The dumbest thing is that you can buy a Prince of Tone (only one side) right now without the wait list. Analogman puts them up for sale almost every Wednesday.
Not really. I have been trying to get a Prince of Tone for almost a year. I checked every Wednesday for months and months. I finally gave up and bought a Wampler Pantheon. It’s not an exact clone of the KOT - just another take on the classic Bluesbreaker circuit, but it’s a helluva great sounding overdrive. Very versatile too. It’s also worth noting that the Prince of Tone is made in Asia with some different components compared to the KOT.
@@chipsterb4946 I got a PoT on the second week I tried to buy one. You have to check at a specific time, there are threads out there that go into more detail. That being said, it's not quite what I was hoping for and I will likely be replacing it with a different drive/distortion down the road.
@@djrea4815 well I can tell you that the Wampler Pantheon sounds fantastic and is very versatile. Goes from clean boost into the edge of distortion if you want that. 3 clipping modes and 3 gain levels, both on toggle switches up top. This is purely personal taste, but my other favorite overdrive right now is the MXR Timmy.
You’ve got to do the Ibanez Mostortion! It’s on nearly every top session players board in Nashville and has been skyrocketing in value over the last 3 years. They’re close to the KoT in price now. Ibanez MT10
I’ve watched your videos a long time…. The first solo in this vid played with the SG are some of the best I’ve heard you play (for my taste anyway). Thanks for the content and hours of entertainment, keep up the great work and happy holidays!!
Mike at Analogman is a great guy and his company is in CT, not too far from where I used to live. I’ve owned a few of his pedals. When I switched over to Fractal I kept only a few pedals, one was his BeanoBoost, a treble booster similar to the Dallas Rangemaster. It really hits the front end of a tube amp and makes it just sing…
This is my favorite video of yours for several reasons. Your take on the wording of the wacky Analog Man website is hilarious. The stuff falling on the floor accompanied by dramatic piano. And the tone demos are super on point! All I ask… ALL I ASK… is that you find some cream-colored pickup covers for that beautiful Strat.
It really is a great pedal. My friend who is a professional, touring guitarist kept asking me if I had a good overdrive he could use and we went through a number of them over a few years and he went through many more on his own, but once I loaned him my King Of Tone, his search ended. He asked me if he could take it on tour with him and I said yes since I wasn't gigging at the time. It became the center of his overall tone, that which his whole sound is based on. And honestly, he has gotten so much use out of it I've just never asked for it back and I probably never will.
I got bit by the KOT bug a couple years ago. Couldn't wait so I paid $650 on Reverb. I've tried desperately to integrate and use this pedal, but it just doesn't do much of anything different from other drives. The left channel on factory setting on mine sounds like I threw a blanket over my amps. I've tried it with Boogie Fillmore 100, 50, Mark V 35 and HXSTOMP. To be honest, the Tone Sovereign in the Stomp is better. I'm sure others have loved it, just not my thing. It will hold a place of ignominy on my pedal shelf but not on my board.
I've thought about maybe sending it back to have it checked out. Since I bought it used, no telling what happened before I got it. But...it was in beautiful, pristine condition with no scratches, so I just don't know.
Just wait until you find the presence/treble pot inside and give that some play. Default is all the way down, but edge it up some and you’ll really find some great drive tones.
The KOT is a great pedal. I've had mine for a long time - I got it so long ago the waiting list was only about a year and a half! Analog Mike Piera is a super good guy, too. Thanks for the video!
My tubeworks has a grounding problem and I hate distortion pedals but I tried a couple and settled on the Ibanez SBA. It is adequate. Calling this a tone pedal piqued my interest. I am not interested in more distortion, just more tone. This sounds really good!
I love the way he filmed all of his other distortion pedals bunched together looking on almost sorrowfully at their obsolescence...which is wrapped lovingly in a beach towel! I'm a new subscriber and I love this channel! Peace!!
Isn't it strange how nothing about a guitar changes but when you use different overdrive/distortion pedals or whatever it changes the feel and playability of the guitar.
Gain, compression, and overdriving the amp into its nonlinear region make the pick attack more aggressive and makes the amp and speakers more of a factor in the process... you are playing the amp and speakers in addition to the guitar.
@@srh361 I wish someone had explained it to me like that when I was starting out. All overdrive pedal demos are actually amp and speaker demos as well.
Today is 10/12/23. I’ve been waiting five years and two months. They’re on the ones ordered May 7th,2018. I ordered mine 8/08/18. So I’m close. Will be a five and a half year wait by the time I get it. I hope. Excited as Heck!
Your sense of rhythm and ear for tone are your most valuable instruments. The expert touch makes an average instrument sound like magic. Mojo is your magic.
I was considering buying an EVH Signature for myself as a Christmas present (and final guitar for me) and was told by Fender they're minimum 18 months out on builds. Well... okay then. That's better than 4 years but still... over a year???
In case you haven't noticed, the supply chain is currently FUBAR. If one of the customers of the supply house where I work wanted something we didn't stock from a big manufacturer in their field, we would give an ETA of 4-6 weeks. That is now 6 months.
I bought my KOT analogman man about 6 or 7 years ago. Took nine months to get back then. Still look new. Great tone too. The prices on Reverb for this pedal w/the box and all the candy, are crazy.
These are amazing pedals but, if a person is playing at home at low volumes you might be disappointed. They are incredible. I’ve bought and flipped them several times. Now with the prices I wish I had kept them longer. I still have one I purchased used for $450 several years ago. Don’t think I’m letting it go any time soon.
@@CradleRawk I feel your pain. I felt the same way when I first got mine but then went to rehearsal and then a gig and was absolutely blown away. The Dualist pedal in my experience works a little better at lower volumes and since I never used the heavy hand side I sold it and am getting the Soloist instead. You can get your money back out of the King of Tone if you decide you don’t like it.
It might be good in the room, but it's not translating through my computer speakers because I've heard this tone with a guitar plugged straight into an amp.
I cringed when I saw another KOT video, it's so easy to be a hater due to the waiting list and crazy used prices. But thank you for being realistic. Your playing is fantastic! Good job, have fun!!!
There are so many good pedals that do a great job of achieving Blues breaker pedal tone , which King of Tone is based on . AnalogMan doesn't over charge for this pedal so that's good but a 4 year wait for a pedal that uses a common circuit and readily available , off the shelf parts is just a bit ridiculous . There are companies making identical clones for under $100 that are available now and everyday . Then there's Morning Glory , Double Barrel , Morning Star , Prince of Tone, Blues Crab , Snouse , 1962, Parthenon and a zillion more of these BB pedals that will get the user to the same place . Some are cheap and some costly yet they all basically do the same thing and sound good . There's nothing magical about any of them . It's a good circuit that sounds great no matter who's name is on the box .
@Glenn...nothing will sound as good as the one that is most hyped and likely most expensive. The guitar community has many such examples of such gear and with all the RUclips demos these days it's seemingly endless. People demoing a single pedal solo with people chiming in on the comments that the pedal sounds amazing. There's no reference, no comparison etc. And when there are comparisons, there's no band, no mix and people will comment on arguably minor variations that in reality all sound good and likely indistinguishable in a mix. Cheers. 🎶🎶🎶
@@nostro1001 I agree with you slightly, a large amount like people these videos. People like chiming in to either help or just converse opinions. I do believe by masking someone’s effort in making a video is negative unless you yourself have a difference (preference) in how something should sound. That’s the beauty of these videos is finding out for yourself what good for you. Casacading views is what drives the channel and this is what makes everyone watch.
With other pedals you won't have the pride of owning an overpriced Analog. When you pay more it will sound better. :-):-):-) .... The question is if your audience will hear it.
@@Nick-qq2nq Naw, that’s not the case in this scenario. I know people want it to be the case SO BADLY but it’s just not. I’ve tried so many KOT clones and variations over the years (trust me…if I don’t have to drag one of my kings of tone out to a thunderstorming gig in July, that’s just fine by me). Each one is touted to be “better” or “just as good” by its fan base but none of them are. The thing about this pedal is that it works *every time* no matter what…which is rare in the pedal world. Almost every pedal has a sonic situation in which it starts falling apart, even those $1500 “Dumble in a box” pedals…ESPECIALLY those pedals. The KOT doesn’t have that. I’ve played it in basically any situation you can name (yes…any situation…I’m not gonna drop names but I’m “one of those douchebags”) and it always holds your sound together.
So who is going get on the waiting list? Lol might just do it for my grandkids. 🤘🏼😁 Would also like to see these pedals compared to the less expensive clones, for us mere mortals who can’t float that kind of spend past the Purchasing Dept aka Wife 😁
Aloha from Hawaii I like to pedal it sounds great especially when you hit the overdrive section keep doing these pedals because I think that the world of pedal has gotten better than ever
Accidentally ended up at their shop in late 90’s and didn’t really know a lot about them. Have done business with them since, including getting backup tapes for my old Echoplex. Super nice people! Very down to earth and still in the same small shop with crew of 3-4 employees maybe still!! Seriously into the quality of their pedals and reputation. Mike is salt of the earth!
The Snouse Black Box (Bluesbreaker clone) has a 24-28 month wait list. I got on the list last year when it was only 12-16 months, and got mine last week. Was it worth it, yes it was! I got the Prince of Tone last year after getting on the KOT waitlist, and for months I just couldn't figure out what all the hype was about. I tried it on several boards with different amps, and I finally got it sounding great using a Strat or Tele on my Z Wreck Jr.
@@soofitnsexy Yes, I feel it is one of the best blues breakers out there. Getting a new one though takes getting on a wait list which is over 2 years now. I got a deluxe version 2 last year and my guitar friends love it. I also was lucky to find a version 1 for cheap at a local music store.
It’s a great pedal. I have two and an original klon as well that I gig hard. I don’t care about the pedals being unobtainium since I got them when they came out for retail, I also gig vintage amps and guitars that I got cheap(ish). My advice to younger players or players getting into equipment now is to look at what’s around now that you can get that will likely grow in value. It’s happening every day, new gear that jumps in price. The klon and KOT aren’t worth the hype prices but they do rule and I’m just happy to have picked them up when they were available
I'm within a month and a half of the current wait date. I am excited every week to refresh it and see if I have inched closer to being able to get my hands on one. Wish I had known about Mike when I lived in Bethel, CT more than a few years ago. I would have had quite the collection if so.
Thanks for the reminder! I have been on the list for a year now. I absolutely love Mike's Sunface fuzz and Bad Bob boost, which are much easier to obtain. I also dig German tools and Italian motorcycles, though, so maybe I'm just into hyped stuff. Great playing and excellent demo.
Love the KoT. I leave it at home, but gig with the Prince of Tone (which has no waiting list). Not as versatile, but still amazing pedal! Great playing, as always.
This is why I have a huge eurorack system dedicated to guitar processing. The effects are higher quality, super thought out, tons of market competition and new ideas, the sound is usually very good and you can freq that bish out with control voltages and millions of other options. Pedals to me equal a bunch of quarter inch cables and power adapters and floor space and putting things away and taking them back out. Just some ideas

The Prince of Tone is built in China! Maybe that’s why it’s readily available. The regular KoT is built in his shop!
The unboxing... its just so beautiful. I cried
Does BeanoBoost make tone sound less farty?
@@brians1793 Actually it does, since boosting the treble also appears to de-emphasize the bass
I've been on the list for 15 months. Hard to still want one after waiting this long, but I still do!
I salute you brother
@@bugzycantrell5139 Thanks, man.
Nice! Higher gain on either side?
@@tom22333 I got the standard-issue V4, IIRC. It's perfect for his style.
That SG tho 😊
Sent chills when I heard it. I don't know what it has. But there is something in the intonation of how the notes decay and the push of the next note
LOL, I love the Miku and Metal Zone right up there with 2 Klons and the KoT
i think you mean the 2 Klons and KoT up there with the Miku and metalzone
It’s one klon and a Chinese klon clone, I watched that video
Miku and MZ..... a powerful combo.
Can't live with it, can't live without it.
I sometimes take it off my board and it always gets back on because i miss it.
Interesting…. I made a clone a few weeks back. And found it to be a very clear sound. And that’s into a Victory vc35. Wonder why yours is mud.
I've thought about maybe sending it back to have it checked out. Since I bought it used, no telling what happened before I got it. But...it was in beautiful, pristine condition with no scratches, so I just don't know.
@@frankglad2989 Have you tweaked the presence pots on the inside? Supposedly it opens up the sound more.
My main pedal cuts through the mix like no other😉
Thanks for the suggestion on the presence adjustment. I'll try that tonight👍
Nice sounding pedal, really love the Twin Peaks-ish background music for the first few minutes of the video.
Just wait until you find the presence/treble pot inside and give that some play. Default is all the way down, but edge it up some and you’ll really find some great drive tones.
Exactly this. Hard to create a rig the KOT won’t work with. This video shows the versatility very well.
I have ran a KOT and Klon together for about 7 years now. Best tone ever.
Damn that single coil and fender amp sound is incredible
That's always the takeaway lesson I get from guitar demos. Fender got it right first time
I love how the KoT can make a strat sound thicker without adding a lot of dirt. It's probably the greatest capability of the KoT.
Yeah I guess it tricks your mind
But life sure does hit different with you get that perfect tone 🎸🤟🏻
Gain, compression, and overdriving the amp into its nonlinear region make the pick attack more aggressive and makes the amp and speakers more of a factor in the process... you are playing the amp and speakers in addition to the guitar.
@@JohnShalamskas Thanks John for that step by step breakdown that none of us knew.
The moment the box hit the floor I swear I could hear Josh Scott crying.
He has the box!
Your sense of rhythm and ear for tone are your most valuable instruments. The expert touch makes an average instrument sound like magic. Mojo is your magic.
Analog Man’s pedal LOOKS like it should be playing “The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald.”
Thanks for your playing on this at 5 min mark. Brought tears.
@@teemusid The fact that my brain didn't put that together has made me very depressed this morning.
Yeeesh, that’s me. Got mine a couple of weeks back and I only play at home at reasonable volumes. It’s not really doing it for me yet
Shout out to the video art direction during the unboxing, very professional indeed
I'm no expert, but $300+ for this? I wouldn't think it's worth it when there are cheaper clones out there.
IDK, it's good but a BK Butler dusts this.. imo
It might be good in the room, but it's not translating through my computer speakers because I've heard this tone with a guitar plugged straight into an amp.
I've been on the list for maybe 2 years. Glad to see you with one.
I cringed when I saw another KOT video, it's so easy to be a hater due to the waiting list and crazy used prices. But thank you for being realistic. Your playing is fantastic! Good job, have fun!!!
I love it as soon as you picked up the strat.... Instance hendrix vibes 😎
Idiots by into hype. Same reason the klon is even a thing
With other pedals you won't have the pride of owning an overpriced Analog. When you pay more it will sound better. :-):-):-) .... The question is if your audience will hear it.
@@Nick-qq2nq
Naw, that’s not the case in this scenario.
I received the email link to order my KOT just this past weekend & on my birthday of all days 🙌
So who is going get on the waiting list? Lol might just do it for my grandkids. 🤘🏼😁
Would also like to see these pedals compared to the less expensive clones, for us mere mortals who can’t float that kind of spend past the Purchasing Dept aka Wife 😁
Aloha from Hawaii I like to pedal it sounds great especially when you hit the overdrive section keep doing these pedals because I think that the world of pedal has gotten better than ever
I remember buying pedals for less then 6 bucks each back in the 60's.
I am so addicted to every of your vids man, i just love geeking around, would love to meet you someday...tell us when you ever come to germany
Sounded awesome! Let’s see the Klon vs King if Tone. Heard some...Tyler Ledbetter 😂 ✌🏼
That unboxing video segment was awesome.
Pedal sounds great.
I can hear Bethany shouting from the other room "Tyler, what the hell did you buy now?" when hearing him yell "YES!" after winning the auction.
Look, I don’t know how to play guitar but I admire people who can and You Sir are pretty entertaining and I enjoy your videos.
I've got a KOT clone and it's fantastic. Much cheaper too. Also, dipswitches are moved to outside so you don't have to open the thing up to change.
Which clone is it?
@@CyberChrist I wanna say Caleb's Clones? I got it off Reverb for a steal.
@@cloudshad0ws Thanks, I wish you had a demo of it on your channel :P But I'll check it out ;)
@@CyberChrist Well don't take it personal, I don't have anything on my "channel." I don't really use RUclips that way.
I tried it on several boards with different amps, and I finally got it sounding great using a Strat or Tele on my Z Wreck Jr.
what is a snouse!!!
@@soofitnsexy Snouse Black Box is a blues breaker pedal.
@@frankenstein4106 is it a good one???? good range?? thank you!!
Oh nice !!! That means I will get mine next year Been on list since 2018 so long I forgot ………
FCS master builders have longer waiting lists. Dale Wilson , vincent can trigt and a few others have longer lists
I run a KOT and a RYRA Klone. Best duo I've found.
That's my new grade school type insult as in, "You're a real dipswitch."
I'm a simple guitar guy. I see a video by Tyler, I click the like button, and THEN I watch it 😂
I'm a proud owner of this pedal, I've owned one for nearly a decade now, cant wait to get it
Kid, you don't need ANY pedals to make your playing sound better!
I'm within a month and a half of the current wait date. I am excited every week to refresh it and see if I have inched closer to being able to get my hands on one.
Wish I had known about Mike when I lived in Bethel, CT more than a few years ago. I would have had quite the collection if so.
Bought one three and a half years ago, used at a modest premium and also got on the list. Due up in March 2022.
Wow! May 2020, I still have a long time to wait
Hi Josh, I'm super interested in learning more about your setup. Do you happen to have a place where you talk about it on internet ? Forums, blog, social média etc...?
