Hi Barry. Stop all this hogwash about your age. You do what most people would find impossible. You are a credit to all us lazy Barstewards. We tend to forget that you are on your own, living on a very small piece of real estate, in the middle of a vast unpredictable and hostile sea. Keep your chin up mate. Keep the videos coming Barry, they always Brighton up my day. Thank you for that. Stay safe

Captains of merchant sailboats in the 1800's kept careful logs of prevailing wind speed and direction arranged by the calendar, the records were used to sail routes which were wind dependable. Not sure if any of these logs survived, but if they did, it would be very helpful in planning routes and avoiding becalmed areas. Good show captain.

It is a good idea and has already been done long ago. This information is available in things called pilot charts. For example here is one for the North Atlantic www.waypointamsterdam.com/pilot%20charts/106may.pdf
Pilot charts supplemented by weather modelling are part of normal passage planning. I would assume that Barry did all this before he left but struck unseasonably bad winds.

They’re called “Sailing Directions” and are still published for every area of the oceans. The values for average wind speed and direction etc by month for every place on chart grids comes from many years of real data from those locations. But as someone else has stated, global climate change is throwing historical norms and averages out the window. Relying on wind, weather and current data from 200 years ago would be silly.

Hey Barry, Too bad about the sail and the pup. Bummer. I joined the crew. You're out there doing it for all us old farts, and we're proud of ye. The future sail lore will be not what Knox-Johnston or Chichester would do, but what Barry Perrins would do. Suggest doing a fund for the sail, you know, if we all chip in kind of thing, and maybe we can cut down the cost of the replacement. Hoping the weather improves, good sailing mate.

Hi Barry. This was a sad video, full of hardship and uncertainties. No wind, low food and water, going backwards, a tired Barry and finally a dead Genoa 😢. Sailing is made of good days and bad days. The art consists of minimizing bad days, anticipating and avoiding to expose yourself. As global weather deteriorates, the number of areas on earth, and periods where sailing should be avoided I am afraid is increasing. After seing the high occurrence of deadly storms in the Med after mid August, last summer I decided to end my 2025 sailing season end of July, in order to minimize exposure to extreme weather 😢. Good luck for your passage to Indonesia and looking forward to the next episode 👋

Capt. Barry .. Too bad about the Fore Sail .. I'm only a SW Florida "back-country" shallow water fisherman whose mid 1960's Center Console Whaler defines exactly what the acronym for Boat is: .. "Bring Out Another Thousand !".. It's then mate, I think of Eric Idle of Monty Python fame and his wonderful song, .. 'Always look on the bright side of life' .. and it's then that I think, .."Well. it could be worse" .. Captain, take a breath .. a brew .. a break .. The best has yet to come .. As always Mate .. Good Luck !! You're living the life !

BUT it made me actually laugh out loud a couple of times seriously. I kept thinking what would I do, cry was the answer. If you ever get in my area, stop in. I am on an island in the pacific called the Big Island south side, the last finishing village in the Hawaiian Islands. I can relate to some of the places you stop, beauty and remoteness. Aloha and safe travels. I like it, not, how everyone tells ya what to do as they are all sitting in their comfortable recliners. LOL also the sunset was the best ever. Don’t go back that way again…
