That's the right way to do it...packing the shaft in the position of alignment in the hull bearing, then using the shaft as the datum to align the P bracket on outboard end and gearbox on the inboard end. Great progress.👍
yes it's a lot of job but its the best way for sure. this strut base exploration is really fascinating. the bedding could be in thicked epoxy but you really need to laminate all over it. cover the strut with fiber versus creat a nice pocket will just save you a lot of time .

Hi Stu. Love the progress you are making. I may have missed an earlier discussion on the following point, so apologies if I am covering old ground. I see that you have installed a prop shaft with an increased diameter but not changed the stern tube. Now only 4mm wiggle room between the new prop shaft and the stern tube. If you haven’t checked this out already, you may want to check how much movement there might be on the engine on the mounts fitted. Any excessive movement typically in heavy sea or simply when the engine is running you might find the prop shaft vibrating against the inside of the stern tube. If you need a wider stern tube, now will be the time to find out!
Happy New Year to you guys. You are rocking it with the alignment. I second the bedding of the P-bracket while it is on the shaft and shaft is set in your stern tube. We used to use stainless steel countersunk screws with hex head sockets in them rather than the slotted screws (for ease of later removal). The bracket would get a good layer of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) and so would all of the screws, threads and bolt heads to avoid any fibreglass from getting in or causing the bracket to bond while bedding. Outside just got puttied over…there is no strength there. To prevent vibration, you need to layer up the inside - please lots of layers to spread the load and dampen the vibrations. Only other concern I have is with the fact that you do not have a bearing in your stern tube and you are putting a flex coupling on your gearbox. Your shaft has the no second support other than at the gearbox and that through a flex coupling….this could get sloppy and lead to all kinds of additional vibrations. Normally a flex coupling is used to isolate the gearbox from the shaft line, provided the shaft has 2 bearings…food for thought.
Proper, prior, preparation and planning prevents piss poor performance 😂.As an old builder, i definitely approve and award an A+ for both Attitude and Style ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Looking good. When built they probably did the same trick you did thru the hull on the P-bracket and then backfilled behind the P-Bracket to hull connection . Then when cured drill for bolts and add any additional fiberglass inside . Cheers Warren
If you have not made this decision yet, May I suggest a dedicated battery mounted as close to the windlass as possible. Much smaller charging cables can then be run to the battery and a short run of good heavy 1-0 cable to the winch. Your winch will perform better & last much longer.

Hey Marina and Stu! Happy New Year to you, may all your wishes come true and you finally can finish your job! I was laughing about the term "window" above the propeller! Funny idea to look for fishes. To be honest now: inside that boat is a pipe laminated through which they lead this plate down to close the hull against water ingress. The pipe inside the boat is ending 10-15cm above water level, also with a watertight cover. This system is used in case you have a rope or plastic bag in your propeller. You open the cover inside the boat, take away the "window" and with a long arm or stick you try to take away all rope/plastic bag. With this you don't need to dive into ice-cold water. Make sure to fiberglass the P-bracket attachment area over at the inside of the hull, to make sure it is strong enough to hold the P-bracket in extreme circumstances. You don't want your P-bracket to come loose in the middle of the ocean.

Engine servicing, get a had operated vacuum oil extractor. Has a tube to put down dipstick tube. Its the way I do our outboards on our Catamaran. When I used to to automatic transmissions, we used one to get the fluid level correct if we over filled and to suck out power steering fluid etc. Only bugger is it can take up a bit of space as you probably need about a 6L one. Could also use for cleaning out hard to get to spaces in bilge.

By not rushing you are able to progress without having to do it a second time . Engine installation is no easy task.
