I lived on steel boats for over 20 years - and think you are making One. BIG. Mistake. All that effort to grind, rust kill and paint external rust is wasted effort - rust will break through within a year or two and you will *forever* be chasing rust as it slowly destroys the boat. Instead, remove every single external fitting and grit blast the *entire* external boat - priming with sprayed two part epoxy primer within hours of the blasting (so done in stages) and then built up using multiple coats of high build epoxy (glass flake if you can). This will mostly last decades and you can do other things on the boat other than chase rust. You are massively under estimating how pernicious rust is and massively over estimating the effectiveness of manual rust removal - which is just a temporary fix but simply does not work in the medium term, on big boats with lots of issues. I had a boat that is now over 100 years old and largely rust free because of proper treatment.

When you see so much rust as this yacht? You can not deny that problem! You KNOW it will go on rusting. If it were alumin(i)um, the oxyde layer would block the rusting. But here? Just wait and you'll see the sharks swimming on the outside of the hull. Why does this young man DO THAT to his family? I don't get it.
I'll be building a boat too, probably steel. I've been welding since age 16. First thing you need to do is learn to weld. Learn to weld steel with Stick and MIG. Second thing you need to do is buy a quality ($3000-4000) LASER rust remover. Screw that media blasting stuff. I'm 62 and have been painting since I was 15. The materials available today are absolutely amazing. I've made the transition from air dry lacquer in the 70's into the beginnings of Lacquer base and 2K clears in the 80's to the full 2 part urethane's and poly's available today. Still I realize that fighting corrosion on a steel boat will be a full time job. I plan on building my boat with Bilge keels. I can run it up on a sand bar, let the tide go out, pressure wash it to get the heavy crud off and continue on with the cleaning with the LASER rust removal and then finish cleaning and painting.

Next project, use a "LASER Cleaning Machine" for all the rust. It will make an 12 hour job only be 15 minutes. I do this for a living for the last 12 years. Not only rust but you can remove any paint or bottom coat without causing any damage to substrate.
Machines big enough to clean a boat hull would be very expensive. I personally prefer aqua blasting as it’s dust free and with inhibitors in the water, there’s no flash rusting. Have you considered zinc metal spray? Lightly abrade and apply an epoxy primer.
I have recently watched a vid from ‘Yorkshire Classic Restourations’ on RUclips. Please watch them use this laser machine for cleaning up rusty parts of car bodies in their shop; the result is unbelievable!! To me as a livelong mechanic and old-car-owner I could never dream of removing rust like that!! Ubviously a car doesn’t equal a ship….. but still!! I am pretty sure the guy that runs this channel (BALLABING-BALLABOOM) will be kind enough to give some advise about this tool and what to expect and what not…. I do imagine however that this equipment has a pricetag that will want you to rent one for your project rather than buying one….
Laser cleaning is for thin metal that cant be sand blasted or shop use on smaller/expensive /sensitive objects Sand blasting or wet sandblasting is or hydro blasting,not to confuse wit were sandblasting. Is the solution for ships ,there is robots that crawl in the hull via magnetic force and clean of paint probably expensive. I tink hydroblasting is used in does.
I don't know how you pay for it, but its nice to see somebody saving an old boat of this size. Not a lot of people, even with boats, have the means to do that.
If your anchor chain is studded , put stainless wire ties at your marks. It helps in the long run. I make my living working on dark burgundy painted tugboats out of New York. In the summer when we wash the house down the water steams off. We have enough electricity for a small city and powerful air conditioning. Painting your boat black in south east asia is going to make it an oven ,in my professional opinion.good luck with the adventure though!

She had a black hull with white superstructure but they painted her 100% Haze Grey and just the switch from white to grey made her so much hotter. Steel boats are a constant maintenance thrill a minute. You will regret painting that steel boat black. Your AC (if you even have one) will work overtime keeping that black boat cool. Diving boat? I’m assuming you plan on being in warmer places all the time? You’re going to find out just how much of a mistake it was to paint the boat black, that steel will hold the heat like crazy and the heat reflecting off the water will make it even worse. Good luck. I'm sure you've found out by now but Ospho does stop the rust but you still need to seal it to completely stop the chemical reactions. Sealant paint is almost immediately applied. Good luck with this project. Michael from Humboldt Harbor, California

When I was a plumber in England we replace many many very old heating systems. In the attic galvanised cold water tanks where rather large and impossible to repair and difficult to take out... So what we used to do was use the inside of the tank and line it with fibre glass.... Not sure if that is an option for you for this water tank but something worked well.

I love watching a good refit on a fiberglass boat because I plan to own one. I appreciate how you've presented months of work quickly and concisely. The mental and physical stress of this large a refit breaks many captains...my hat's off to you and your crew!
What your missing is this.... Called thin hull. A old boat looks cool. Steel is great. Say it started at x thick steel plates.. 50 years later, after decades of rust. Sand blasting, grinding, patching, forgetting to replace the , zink plates. You do not have the same hull. U have a thin hull. U lost x % of how strong the ship was. That's why, most get scrapped. Insurance firms, wouldn't insure them. But great job. On the work... With two million more dollars she going to look great. And after u sink $2.000.000 in her.... She will be worth $800.000.. great investment.

I am doing a similar work , on an Italian iron boat build 1982 in Italy. The only difference that I do not have so many people helping me. I am cutting ,welding now for eleven months and there's about 9 m2 still to close and weld in the hull. Not talking about the interior whome has been destroyed to be able to arrive at all the rust and tanks ( One big bag full of shit dried for about 13 years) . All the rust was over stucco and repainted so the boat was beautiful and over more sold with a scan where the hull had between 5,6 and 5,9 mm overall....so a big surprise when I put water into the tanks and the boat was full of blackwater....a nightmare....

Hey guys, new subscriber here, I used to sail a 43-foot cutter rig. It got knocked down with the stick in the water twice in the Marquesas in a 138 mile an hour hurricane. Sailed it back to San Diego and did a complete makeover. I like what you are doing on your boat. It will be a really nice boat when you are done. If I were to ever get another boat, it would be a multihull boat. I like what I see. Gone with the Wynns have.it is very nice. I do prefer a trimaran, mainly because I have had 4 back surgeries and just don't like standing sideways. The chances of me ever getting on a boat again is pretty slim. The cost alone would be too much for my retirement income. But if one of my ideas ever works, then yes I would consider getting another boat. But it better be a lot of money because I want lots of comfort. Lol ❤
To get rid of the bug. See if you can get fuel doctor from Australia. It will kill any bugs and contamination. Clean the injectors and fuel lines and dissipate condensation.. It's an amazing product.
@ExpeditionDrenched You're welcome. It's great for all fuel applications, especially Marine.. I use it regularly in my 80 series landcruiser. It keeps everything running smoothly.
Steel boats can be tricky. I cruised a steel Chatham 33' pilothouse cutter for 7 years and knew it was well built with inorganic zinc primer on the inside with spray foam insulation above the waterline and an inorganic zinc primer under the polyurethane top coat outside and several coats of barrier coat under the anti-fouling below the waterline with enough sacrificial zincs to protect it as well. You really can't beat the strength of steel especially when cruising in the high latitudes like I did.
In the tropics it's not just an option but an absolute necessity. Algae grows real fast in warm, humid environments. And you can't treat it once it's started growing - you have to catch it when the fuel is fresh.
My advice is better than everyone else’s… LOL. If it were me, I would have taken that bare steel and used Polyurea (like spray on truck bed coating) and coated it with that…. That stuff is bulletproof…
Great to see she is getting a new lease on life. You had on board my old mainsail that we gave the boat in Fiji. It was from my Catana 521 called O2. I now have an 18 meter steel ketch called Quantum Leap and I did a massive refit on her in Townsville. Still have some work to do. How was the yard?
I'm a v.recent "drop by" but becoming very interested in this boat project. Trying not to be intrusive, but how is it all financed? The crew labour, assuming gratis, excellent.....but all the rest , just $ after $ continuously. All the best in getting it all sorted though!. Had concerns regarding the black paint as per others. from my h/school physics, "black body absorption." Will you be painting over in a different colour?
The way your dealing with the rust is not gonna work, give it 2 months in the water, your sandblasting will be good but the grinding rattle gunning, rust converter on the deck and stuff no good. non the less reconditioning these old steel yachts is tedious and and art, which it looks like you guys are loving it! keep on smiling, great episode
Where do the money trees grow? Money tree is tropical, native to Central and South America. It typically grows in marshy wetlands where there's plenty of moisture and high humidity. Indoors, you'll see the best results if you can mimic those natural growing conditions.

Hi guys, new subscriber, small suggestion when cutting into your hull, you should round the corners so that there is no where for cracks to emanate from as they will with 90 degree corners.
Flash rust is not a big problem in ship painting , especially with hydro blasting, with is very common in ship yards you get this phenom all the time ,they dont sandblast again to clean this up , tjey paint primer on the flash rust and this is not seen as something that is very detrimental to paint Adhesion. That said they do the paint as soon as popossible after blasting.

I am doing a similar work , on an Italian iron boat build 1982 in Italy. The only difference that I do not have so many people helping me. I am cutting ,welding now for eleven months and there's about 9 m2 still to close and weld in the hull. Not talking about the interior whome has been destroyed to be able to arrive at all the rust and tanks ( One big bag full of shit dried for about 13 years) . All the rust was over stucco and repainted so the boat was beautiful and over more sold with a scan where the hull had between 5,6 and 5,9 mm overall....so a big surprise when I put water into the tanks and the boat was full of blackwater....a nightmare....
We can measure, we can test it,

But heaven knows we'll never stop it!

Hey guys, new subscriber here, I used to sail a 43-foot cutter rig. It got knocked down with the stick in the water twice in the Marquesas in a 138 mile an hour hurricane. Sailed it back to San Diego and did a complete makeover.

If I were to ever get another boat, it would be a multihull boat. I like what I see. Gone with the Wynns have.it is very nice. I do prefer a trimaran, mainly because I have had 4 back surgeries and just don't like standing sideways.
The chances of me ever getting on a boat again is pretty slim. The cost alone would be too much for my retirement income. But if one of my ideas ever works, then yes I would consider getting another boat. But it better be a lot of money because I want lots of comfort. Lol ❤
To get rid of the bug. See if you can get fuel doctor from Australia. It will kill any bugs and contamination. Clean the injectors and fuel lines and dissipate condensation.. It's an amazing product.

@@ExpeditionDrenchedif you’re not constantly adding additive for moisture you will kill any diesel engine on a boat.
Steel boats can be tricky. I cruised a steel Chatham 33' pilothouse cutter for 7 years and knew it was well built with inorganic zinc primer on the inside with spray foam insulation above the waterline and an inorganic zinc primer under the polyurethane top coat outside and several coats of barrier coat under the anti-fouling below the waterline with enough sacrificial zincs to protect it as well. You really can't beat the strength of steel especially when cruising in the high latitudes like I did.

You can actually run a keel cooled generator of a metal boat while on the hard for quite a while without overheating. The hull will warm up some.
The nice thing about steel and aluminum is you can cut out a section and weld new a new section on. Or modifications much easier than fiberglass

Add ATF to your diesel when filling it. It will quell the algae and absorb any moisture.
It also will keep the injectors clean on your engine
In the tropics it's not just an option but an absolute necessity. Algae grows real fast in warm, humid environments. And you can't treat it once it's started growing - you have to catch it when the fuel is fresh.
My advice is better than everyone else’s… LOL. If it were me, I would have taken that bare steel and used Polyurea (like spray on truck bed coating) and coated it with that…. That stuff is bulletproof…
Great to see she is getting a new lease on life. You had on board my old mainsail that we gave the boat in Fiji. It was from my Catana 521 called O2. I now have an 18 meter steel ketch called Quantum Leap and I did a massive refit on her in Townsville. Still have some work to do. How was the yard?

I'm a v.recent "drop by" but becoming very interested in this boat project. Trying not to be intrusive, but how is it all financed? The crew labour, assuming gratis, excellent.....but all the rest , just $ after $ continuously. All the best in getting it all sorted though!. Had concerns regarding the black paint as per others. from my h/school physics, "black body absorption." Will you be painting over in a different colour?

The way your dealing with the rust is not gonna work, give it 2 months in the water, your sandblasting will be good but the grinding rattle gunning, rust converter on the deck and stuff no good. non the less reconditioning these old steel yachts is tedious and and art, which it looks like you guys are loving it! keep on smiling, great episode
Where do the money trees grow? Money tree is tropical, native to Central and South America. It typically grows in marshy wetlands where there's plenty of moisture and high humidity. Indoors, you'll see the best results if you can mimic those natural growing conditions.
just come in from stripping down part of the motor in my 50yrs old tractor, and the rust is a problem too...

Hi guys, new subscriber, small suggestion when cutting into your hull, you should round the corners so that there is no where for cracks to emanate from as they will with 90 degree corners.

Patching a sheet that is exposed to physical stress should never include a sharp corner….

Flash rust is not a big problem in ship painting , especially with hydro blasting, with is very common in ship yards you get this phenom all the time ,they dont sandblast again to clean this up , tjey paint primer on the flash rust and this is not seen as something that is very detrimental to paint
Adhesion. That said they do the paint as soon as popossible after blasting.
