Hey, sorry for the late reply. We were in Nashville and just returned home. Luke's first kit was a Roland Backbeat. You can find it on sale quite often. It is a good starter kit, but we had to replace the cymbals after one week as they were completely trashed. Luke's also replaced all drum heads with Evans and now has a new snare as well. We also replaced some of the stands and hardware. So, it adds up $$$ pretty quickly. I'm not sure what kit would be best for rock. I think the heads, snare, and cymbals make all the difference. Sorry, I'm not more helpful than that.
