That Cub approach was wild 😮
I used to have a 7ECA Champ. With no flaps slips were pretty much standard to loose altitude fast.
@1:31, hearing "don't sink" from an instructor is way less scary than hearing it from the GPWS lol.
Challenger pilot seemed a little defensive. Didn't much seem to like being offered advice, being told he was low, being told to watch his bank angle. But I'm thinking exactly the same things to myself as I'm watching the vid. Like, "woa... you're not flying a C152" as he lets the wing drop. "red over red, pilot is dead" as we see the VASI.
@@frotoe9289 He interrupted every instruction with "yup yup yup", how arrogant.
@@stickshaker101 I'd hate to see him trying an instrument approach in LIFR. Woof. "YOU'RE LOW!" "Yup" "You just pegged the needle" "Yup"
Totally agree. Very dismissive. That kind of arrogance gets you in trouble
Agree with all the comments here.
I’ve flown many times into Aspen, I’ve never seen 4 red. This was a lousy approach.
That aspen landing! Wow!
Yeah, I've gone skiing there a number of times and driven by the airport, thinking it's risky enough in a car, no way I'd ever fly into the place.
Excuse me while I extract this seat cushion from my posterior.
it actually looked worse then it was IMHO, the plane was being rocked by gusts and/or turbulence; the pilot rode it out with good speed and lined it up, once down close to the runway it looked like the gusts were minimal and s/he was able to land uneventfully.
@@AndyPat239 The Aspen Airport is rated as one of the most dangerous in the entire country.
@@joeyjamison5772 yes i can see the approach can be tricky but depending upon the wind direction and speed the landing should be ok. in winter it would be whole different ball game and I wouldn't want to fly there!
The forward slip is so fun. Turning the plane sideways to the direction of flight with the nose down and having plenty of control.
*This was easily the best 3MOA of this year so far* I'm so grateful to the wonderful team who painstakingly curate these clips for our enjoyment.
*It's been a 'rolling' week for planes and tires.*

Forward slip......More like droppin from the sky!
Lol, looked like a hot air balloon with a hole in it coming in!
@petemccalam5727, Exactly, thank you... it was more of a downward drop than a forward slip... 😅😂
Excellent side slip from that Cub pilot... that was steep.
Why was it labelled as a “forward” slip? I’ve never heard of a forward slip.
@@Lozzie74this was a forward slip. (Not a side slip). A forward slip is taught as early as private pilots license.
Really, really wish these commentators would think before they speak. 🙄 And turn down the drama from 11.
👍
Or. Better yet.... Not speak at all

Thanks for sharing my Aspen landing!
Wonder how close they were to V1 before RTO
Couldn't have been too far
Hard to say for sure but I'd guess it was really close. Must have had some super hot brakes by the time they stopped at the end of the runway.
@@casperthegm741
I saw the thrust reversers deploy.
If they used full reverse thrust, they wouldn't have needed to ask for much performance out of the brakes, even if the aircraft was at MTOW.
Additionally, the thrust reversers are not factored into the runway length and V1 speed calculations done by the FMS computer in the aircraft. This is because the thrust reversers can either fail to work, be forgotten, or even deploy asymmetrically if the wrong kind of failure happens. So the aircraft will calculate a V1 speed that allows it to stop by the end of the runway even if there is no use of the thrust reversers.
The way that type certificates are issued for airliners ensures that any airliner will be rated for an RTO at V1 even if the aircraft is loaded to MTOW, without use of the thrust reversers.
This is something that they actually have to pass a test for before the aircraft type is granted a type certificate and/or allowed to fly paying passengers.
It only has to be rated for a SINGLE stop in this configuration, but it does have to come to a full stop on the runway and sit there for like half an hour (might be a bit less) dealing with the hot brakes, and it's not allowed to have any issues that cause damage to the aircraft beyond what happened during the process of coming to a stop.
There's a somewhat infamous video of an A340 undergoing this test where the tires catch fire from the hot brakes, IMO this counts as a failed test and they would have needed to adjust or re-design some things and try again in order to pass that certification test.
If the aircraft does this test and the tires deflate, that is NOT a failure condition. This is because the tires on airliners have something called "Fuse Plugs" which are purpose-designed to melt at a certain temperature, and because these plugs are one of the things that hold the air in the tires, when they melt, the tires are rapidly (but safely) deflated. This prevents the tires from bursting and potentially damaging the aircraft. If the tires BURST, that is likely a failure condition, but if the fuse plugs function correctly, the fact that the aircraft might be unable to move after this hot-brakes RTO due to a number of deflated tires is not something that will count towards a failing grade.
I looked at the ADSB data and highs speed seen was 152 kts

This was a really good set. Best in a while!!
I agree, one of the best ever, and without a clickbait title!

First landing? Without the coms I would say that was a vet!! Sheesh that was smooth.
Wow the guy at the beginning sure was excited!

And That is How "Slip it In" Gentlemen. If it wasn't clear the Slip allows you to QUICKLY loose a lot a altitude without picking up speed. (or to freaking out your unaware passengers)

"They did in fact roll the trucks."
2:37 I was in a Beechcraft landing in JNU from GST and had to do a high angle landing like this, maybe a bit steeper. These bush pilots are super skilled.
Very well done young man !!
Cool!😊
Always good to see the fire trucks surrounding the aircraft you're travelling on. Not!

😊
Honest question, how do pilots know their tire burst?
Vibrations on the rudder pedals and noise from scattered rubber hitting the airframe mainly. A yaw tendency would be felt aswell. It can be tricky and possibly mistaken for an engine malfunction in such fast moving scenario!
Hope I gave an idea :)
@@leofrgt thanks for this, because I have honestly seen drivers who don't notice a blown tire for a long time. So something as big as a plane I would imagine it would be harder to tell, but I think the vibrations on the rudder makes sense because planes are very noisy and bumpy at takeoff, I doubt they would hear the explosion or notice the debris hitting the plane.
they have tire pressure monitors actually
@KingInTheSoutha indeed, it would depend on the dimension of the plane and the way the tire breaks down. In full flight simulators I had the chance to practice it would feel very similar to an engine surge at first!
Maybe you might find interesting that after a certain speed is actually reccomended to continue the takeoff then reject it :)
@@leofrgt oh yes lol. Petr has spoken at length about how after V1, you only abort the takeoff for engine failure or if the plane is unsafe to fly :)
Great video!
Thanks!
Well done,I will acknowledge you since he hasn’t yet
The Captain is everywhere with that AA tire blow out
The pilot landing into Aspen sounds like Groundpund69
Sounded too much like those YupYupYupYupYuuuuuuuup muppets...
I saw Steve's original video of the American with the blown tire yesterday. It actually took ARFF a very long time to get on scene and the brakes were fully involved by the time they got there. You reported completely incorrectly.
It took 4 minutes to respond from the moment the tire blew, I watched the original video with the hysterical commentator.
@@williamedwards1528
To be fair, when the thing to be responded to is "Fire" and the firefighters and fire trucks are stationed so close to the incident, 4 minutes IS a rather long time.
Inside of an airport and for fire emergency, 4 minutes are an eternity. FAA specifies 90 seconds evacuation time for aircraft design, aren't there any rules about how fast fire trucks and ambulances must reach any spot within an airport?
I don't know if there's a time but you have to remember they are not sitting fully dressed so once they get notified they have to get dressed, get in the truck start going, they also have to get permission from the tower before they cross any taxiways or the runway
Really liked the Challenger 300 landing. Seems like the student pilot had it by the balls and was getting a bit frustrated with the number one instructing him on every little thing.
Not a student pilot.
Thanks, not a student pilot anymore haha, hope you watched the full video as well and checked out the channel

You could see one of the tires on that 737 starting to shed the tread (or shred perhaps) before it actually blew.
Don't know of the pilots could feel it at that point.
That Cub approach looked like most of mine! My instructor was always telling me I was too high but I was pretty comfortable with the side slip.

The plane had to be re-tyred.
If you watch the original video of the AA 737 with the rejected takeoff, it took a while for the fire trucks to show up. Apparently the pilots didn’t know that the undercarriage was on fire.
Many industries are already paying alot for poor quality, cheap labor and I suspect it will get alot worse before it gets better.
Not to mention hiring based on everything BUT experience, training, and ability....

A guide to the loss of funds and the process to recover them.
I don't know that the second pilot or the instructor gave me much confidence. The pilot didn't seem to be listening, and the instructor honestly at that point should have taken control at that point.
In trucking, this is analagous to having a student getting ready to go down a mountain in Idaho it Colorado, and telling them that they're in the wrong gear, and going too fast, and having them go "yep yep yep yep yep" and then proceed to barrell down the mountain in the wrong gear, too fast. Just because everything went well this time, doesn't mean it will next time.

0:51 A guy that has NEVER landed a Cessna 150 or 172 in a bean field to pick up his buddy/buddies. Just saying.
SORRY BUT IN THE REAL VIDEO IT TOOK WAY TO LONG FOR THE EMERGENCY TRUCKS TO ARRIVE
Omg those voice comments on the first one are so annoying. Just take a video. QUIETLY..
👍🐿👍
Hey um do you go to some countries to make these vedios?
The first clip is a good example of how proper training pays off. The pilot(s) could easily have panicked in the 2 seconds (?) available and continued with the takeoff, not solving the problem, just compounding it. The 'V¹, V², TOGA or abort' decision needs to be almost instinctive to be effective, and in this instance it was.
A less well-drilled crew might have got fully airborne, potentially doing more harm to their plane, having to land (fully-laden) on an undercarriage with an unknown amount of damage, and leaving the runway in a messy/dangerous state.
Now imagine applying the typical car driver's reaction to such a situation. Without the same level of training, rather than stopping immediately they'd have pressed on, thinking, "I can save this... No sweat... It's only a burst tyre... Keep going...", hoping there'd be time to make a better decision later on.
There's never a good time to make a better decision. It's the first one you make that matters, and this plane's pilot(s) got things exactly right.
Everything you said is just wrong
@@pw7040right. She is wrong indeed.
The end result was safe, so I won’t criticize the pilots. But most well trained pilots take off above 80 knots with a blown tire. It’s much safer. You get to land and use the full length of the runway, as well as having a much lighter aircraft.
They probably didn’t know it was a blown tire and they thought they had an engine failure at first.
OMG!! A Boeing aircraft blew a tire! How horrible! OMG!!! An Airbus floated past the marker! Why Boeing, WHY?!?? OMG!! A Cessna landing in the wind! When will Boeing fix their issues?!??
