      @crucisnh 5 лет назад +203

      Brady has the right kind of mobility to avoid some pass rushers (pocket awareness, a good first step, etc.). He's just not a running QB. And he won't outrun a pass rusher. But he can occasionally generate some missed tackles with a timely dodge. And yet, he's always been a LOT better runner than Bledsoe ever was. Bledsoe always looked incredibly clumsy when he tried to run. Brady doesn't look clumsy, he's just kinda slow.

    *April 16, 2000* : New England Patriots draft QB Tom Brady in the 6th round... #199 overall.
    Making Tom Brady the #4 QB on the Patriots depth chart behind Drew Bledsoe, Michael Bishop, and John Friesz.
    *December 24, 2000* : New England loses to the Miami Dolphins 24-27. Ending their season with a 5-11 record.
    *March 8, 2001* : Patriots sign QB Drew Bledsoe to a 10-year $103 Million Dollar deal.
    *September 9, 2001* : The Patriots open up their 2001 season with a loss in Cincinnati 17-23.
    Tom Brady is now #2 QB on the Patriots depth chart... behind Drew Bledsoe but in front of Michael Bishop and Damon Huard.
    *September 11, 2001* : Terrorists attack America. All Week 2 NFL games postponed.
    *September 23, 2001* : The NFL resumes play and the New York Jets visit Foxboro Stadium.
    - On 3rd and 10 with 5:11 remaining in the game... Drew Bledsoe attempted running for a 1st down and was hit hard by Jets LB Mo Lewis and Shaun Ellis but was 1 yard short.
    - With 3:36 remaining.... The Patriots get the ball back and Drew Bledsoe comes back out for the next series. With good field position the Patriots ran 2 run plays for 8 yards. suffered a false start penalty then turned the ball over when Bledsoe hit FB Marc Edwards with a quick shovel pass but then promptly fumbled the football. A coach's challenge by Belichick but the ruling on the field would stand. Jets take over.
    - With 2:16 remaining.... The Patriots would get the ball back but this time.... Drew Bledsoe remained on the sideline. Michigan alum Tom Brady came out onto the field.... and a legend was born.
    **Fun Fact**: This is also the same game where the Patriots had the Tuck Rule called against them. Foreshadowing for the future.
    *November 23, 2001* : Coach Bill Belichick announces to the media that Tom Brady will remain starter for the 2001 season even with Drew Bledsoe now back healthy. Just 6 1/2 months after signing his new contract and Tom Brady only making $300,000/year. Drew Bledsoe is PISSED about being benched and sharing his frustration about the situation publicly with the media.
    *February 3, 2002* : The New England Patriots beat the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl 36.
    *February 6, 2002* : Boston holds a Super Bowl parade for their team. Noticeably missing from the parade is QB Drew Bledsoe who did not make the trip.
    *April 22, 2002* : The New England Patriots trade 30 year old 3x Pro Bowler and 9 year veteran Drew Bledsoe to the Buffalo Bills for the Bills' 2003 1st Round Draft Pick.
    (This pick would result in the #14 overall pick in 2003 draft. Patriots traded this pick and their 6th rd pick that year to move up 1 spot to #13 and select DE Ty Warren).
    The rest is history.

    Brady is the single greatest proof that 40 time can mean virtually nothing in regard to a Qb’s elusiveness, pocket awareness, and overall ability to avoid the rush. Romo said that Brady is the best of all time at seeing/avoiding/slipping defenders while keeping his eyes downfield to find receivers. In all my years watching football, I think Romo is right.

    • @yrudonking
      @yrudonking 5 лет назад +6

      Yea 40 is straight line speed and that just doesn't matter in the pocket. I cant believe they used that as an argument of concern for a QB

    • @G5Nvm
      @G5Nvm 5 лет назад +11

      That's all great, but you need to realize that the Patriots is the greatest organization of our era today and that they have consistently put out some of the best offensive line men each year. The statistics are all there if you want to fact check me. Brady's OL is slept on and people forget that a QB is only as good as his protection.

    • @Hatchet-Jack
      @Hatchet-Jack 5 лет назад +5

      Totally agree. Marino had great pocket awareness also. His 40 time was probably 6+ but he was tremendous at sliding in the pocket to avoid the rush.

    • @1TotalJabroni
      @1TotalJabroni 5 лет назад +5

      So much more than that, or any physical metric, is competitiveness aka "heart" and football I.Q. Brady is off the charts in all of those categories. You'd think teams would learn something, but teams are always still just drafting the freak athlete because of "the potential" and it hardly ever works out.

    • @1TotalJabroni
      @1TotalJabroni 5 лет назад +2

      @@G5Nvm yes it cannot be understated, Brady has benefited immensely from his coach and organization. He has always had an elite offensive line, a rushing attack that is good enough when it needs to be and a defense that's the same way. But you also can't deny how pretty of a ball he throws, how unflappable he is, how driven he is, and how massive his kahonies are. Brady has always been on another level.
      I often think what would have happened if, say, my Detroit Lions drafted Brady, how different would his career be? Would he be a winner? Would he have turned around a horrible franchise, or would he have gotten demolished behind no protection or saddled with coaches too inept to even start him? If only we could invent an alternate reality device to playout the simulation haha..

      Pretty late to this comment, but you've got it the wrong way around; Gideon was the player taken right AFTER Brady at pick 200. Pick 198, the actual player taken before him, was St. Louis Rams safety Matt Bowen from Iowa (who, as it so happens, got his first career interception off of Brady in 2002 as a member of the Packers).

    I grew up as a Brady hater as a kid, but I completely changed my perspective now as an adult. The man worked his ass off to become the GOAT that he is now & he took massive, massive pay cuts to help his team win SBs. I feel the same way about Brady now than I do about Dirk... Didn't appreciate them in their primes, but admired & cherished them when they retired (Well, Brady is still playing). When Brady eventually retires, I'll most likely will be appreciate him more than I do now, but I'm giving the man his flowers while he's still playing. His work ethic & selflessness is definitely things to admire.

Every starter from 1992 to 2007 (Grbac, Collins, Dreisbach, Griese, Brady, Henson, Navarre, Henne, Mallett) made an NFL roster multiple years. All of them except Dreisbach had pretty significant NFL careers - shame that injuries in both college and the NFL derailed Dreisbach.
