My favorite part of this ep is how Spike has brain surgery without so much as mussing his hair, and Riley has heart surgery and walks away an hour later with a bandaid.
No spoilers, but now (from the next ep) is when Season 5 starts to hit the heights and become THE Buffy season.
Your dog is too adorable for words.
Performing brain and heart surgery without any assistance is pretty wild as well.
I love that Cass realizes and startes its a dream before Spike wakes up, yet still goes into shock before that realization.

Without getting into spoilers...
We know that vampires can retain parts of their humanity when turned. We know this from the Judge, who saw that the vampire loved reading. Who saw humanity in both Dru and Spike, where Angelus had none.
Angel reinforced that the Vampire personality is based off the person they are when turned, when talking about Vampire Willow.
Dru was pious and devoted to God, which Angelus prayed on. Tormented her, but told her God had plans for her, to accept her place as a "devil child.". Which is terrifying when you realize Dru is driven by belief and devotion.
Without getting into Spikes past or spoilers, the thing we know about him is he is driven by his passions. He loves fighting, and he loved Dru, to the point of passionate default.
Now they are still corrupted forms of these human traits, but it has always made Spike and Dru top tier vampires in my mind

Another great reaction. Soulless vampires do sometimes fall in love as we saw with Spike and Dru but it's obsessive and toxic rather than sefless.
Your questions, ideas, and confusion are eerily similar to ours when this aired. Season 5 is a well told story and patience will be rewarded. Harmony is great comic relief and makes sure that the Cordelia wing of BTVS is served well. Too early to comment on many of your observations but Riley is floundering. He was raised to be a soldier and a warrior. What do we do with warriors in peacetime and no wars to fight? A question not always with an answer. Riley sees Buffy in a war with a home to defend and invaders to fight. That was his war in the past but when he is with Buffy, he is really a tag along. Riley was trained to be a leader and one that achieves an objective. With Buffy he can not be the leader but most importantly, he can never be in total command. Riley can handle working with a strong woman( Walsh) but can he handle not having final decision making power. Remember Buffy is The Chosen One and Riley can help but never will be the one in all the world. You call it self sabotage but I call it the realization that he can never be a true equal to Buffy, never be the Commander in Chief, and he does not want to be Xander. Like Xander stuck in his emotional basement, Riley cannot ever become more than a soldier in Buffy’s Army. Willow and Tara are witches with both growing more powerful and he’s witnessing their power increase. Giles has the brains, knowledge, and experience he can not match. So for a guy like Riley who competes in most everything, he is no match for anyone but Xander. Xander that was living in the basement, no college, and with no supernatural powers. Riley is feeling insecure and for his viewpoint it makes sense.
Something that most people forget is that wayyyy back in season 2 when Spike was still ostensibly the big bad, he and Drusilla brought in the Judge. The Judge's whole thing was burning the humanity out of everyone and the Judge initially wants to go after both Spike and Drusilla, but they basically talk him down with a "we brought you back, you owe us" speech and the Judge burns another seemingly humanity having vampire instead.
Now you could be thinking "So what? That could just mean that humanity is a separate concept from the soul."
When later in that same story a newly de-souled Angelus shows up and the Judge actually tries to burn the humanity out of him he doesn't find any humanity there.
I know that Joss Whedon and the other writers had a big tantrum over people forgetting that Spike was evil and didn't have a soul and repeatedly wrote things to reinforce this concept, but they are the ones that wrote into their story that Spike and Drusilla and that one nerdy vampire had humanity and Angelus did not. Take from that what you will.
I mean, nobody would deny that Spike has the qualities that the Judge is implied to be talking about: affection, emotional attachment etc. (although it's worth noting that Spike and Dru had enough to annoy the Judge but not enough to be killed on contact)
The debate/disagreement that happened, is currently happening in this comment section and, i'd wager will continue to happen for some time; is whether those qualities are enough to add up to "love" or whether actual, true love requires a kind of selflessness that soulless vampires aren't capable of.
The writers have an opinion on this and attempt to draw a contrast in both Buffy *and* Angel. I tend to agree with them.
Harmony didn't mess up the aim. She fired by mistake.

One thing I really like about an Enemies to Lovers trope is when they use an argument to subtly sneak in subtext in the dialogue that shows how they really care about each other and the characters can eventually pick up on it. It's very satisfying. Yelling turns into yelling compliments, turns into FeEliNgS.
Mercedes McNab is such a gem.

Great reaction Cass! At this point, I think that Riley is a caricature of a man that just can't handle strong independent women. He believes that he, as a man, should be the strong protective one.
Spike having feelings for Buffy is in character for him. Remember in season two he was so in love with Drusilla, and he was heartbroken when he came back in season 3 when Dru was gone.
I don't think Riley is that simple. His whole life fell apart last season, he lost his mentor, his purpose, his sense of self... And then he made Buffy his everything. He's in an anxious codependent place... And Buffy simply doesn't love him the way he needs to be loved. He's not wrong in feeling that.
I think Riley gets a lot of hate for spiraling this season, but of course he does, he doesn't have anything that's his.
@@ceceliam9014Riley has been the odd guy out since almost the beginning. I was the only boy in a solid group of 9 that watched Buffy every Tuesday. From the beginning a few did not like Riley fans and none of them felt for him the way they did for Angel. The best I heard from them was, “At least he’s not Parker” Riley gets more grief than earned but the reality was the majority of fans never made him vital to the show.
@@williambowman2326 I'm pretty sure I didn't like Riley the first time watching the show, because I felt like Angel was who she should be with. And I don't think he's vital to the show. I think he doesn't really fit with Buffy. But I also think he's a good guy going through a lot, and that he makes some dumb mistakes but he's a redeemable character, not a bad person.
Yeah, you ask so many questions that would be great to discuss. After you've seen the show that is.

One of Buffys many Freudian slips about Spike.
I dont think the Chip changes Spike in any meaningful way but rather its the lived experiences he's has because of the Chip that make fall in love. He's forced to find meaning in life without killing so the chip has sort of expanded his worldview in a sense. He's always been capable of love so to speak, We know he loved Drusilla, but he's never had difuss from the idea of killing a slayer. Since having a chip he's had to adjust and find a way to co-exist with her and even develop a relationship with that goes beyond preditor/pray(re:school hard). Now that killing her is no longer an option and is off the table he has to accept her as someone in which they trade information, fight on the same side when it serves the both of them so in and so forth.

Spike has "love" in the way he can, but that's basically a selfish love and obsession without a soul. He can care about her approval, he can care about not losing her, but ultimately it's about what he wants from her.

Riley was right all along. He has no agency, his entire identity is wrapped up in Buffy's. Combine that with this whole problem being a result of what people he trusted did to him, and he gave up everything and everyone for Buffy. He needs a purpose, and to be needed, and it's clear to him that Buffy doesn't need him or love him or even consider him an equal partner. Everything he's done on screen so far this season is a cry for help, while doing everything he can to support Buffy.
All of this! I couldn't have said it better myself.
He had an agency when he was with the Initiative. Without it, he's a puppy around Buffy's ankles.
@@Madbandit77 I don't think he had it even with the initiative. With them he obeyed orders, didn't ask questions. He was a supersoldier. Now that he's not with them he's lost. When he met Buffy it messed up how he perceived gender roles. He thinks he has to be physically stronger than her to protect her and be worthy of her. He cannot accept that he's now a regular human and she can take care of herself and protect him. Xander also had that insecurity in earlier seasons and felt useless, but he eventually got over it.
@@user-dx2dm8oq8g Your points about Riley are valid, but I don't think, at this time, Xander has gotten over his feelings for Buffy totally because Cordelia, Willow and Anya has been surrogates and the fantasy of Dawn having a crush on him is [REDACTED]. Said feelings will arise in a future episode.

To add to Spikes dream we have to add what Buffy did to him (Spike doesn't know that it was Faith) in "Who Are You?" last season, that was probably the catalyst that set things off even though he have been obsessed with Buffy for a long time.
Knowing it takes months to watch reactors get through the story lines being laid out for just this season always kills me -- and that's faster than these episodes were coming out when we were watching these originally on broadcast TV!

I think Riley sabotages himself. If you have zero self-esteem and communicate it to people or they can tell, then they will see you that way too inevitably. This is what happens when your confidence is based off external things. When you lose them, you lose yourself. I think Buffy is able to fall in love with a regular human. When Riley was with the initiative, he was confident and didn't feel threatened by anything. Now he's so insecure that I don't think he realizes that it's obvious to others. It doesn't matter how much Buffy reassures him, that's how he feels about himself. Xander felt the same way in the group when you look at earlier seasons, but he's now realized that he's useful and helping in his own way.
Hold on to your seat because starting on the next episode season 5 really revs up.
First forgetting Dawn and then forgetting Graham!?!

Funny part about this episode is that when you run the series back, it was very obvious that we would eventually find ourselves here.

The Whedonian concept of the "Soul" is actually pretty fungible with "Conscience", "Humanity", "20th century Western liberal values" and "Storytelling Artistic License".
Spike may not HAVE a soul, but he's GOT soul.
Another super S5 episode. Spike getting to the point where he can't control his feelings towards Buffy. He knows he can't fight it now, and it's consuming him. Even though he thinks the Doctor has taken out the chip he then realized he's still the same. Riley showing his insecurities and that he will never be as strong as Buffy. Will it be Biley or Spuffy, or will Bangel make a comeback. Both Riley and Spike still in Angel's shadow at this point, but we will see. We also see Joyce say to Dawn 'who are you' with Joyce also collapsing, a very powerful scene.

Spike had a soft spot for Buffy since season 2. He, a vicious vampire who killed two slayers, couldn't beat her. It automatically put her in his system as someone to think about, to analyze, to watch out for. I think that's how his obsession started.

souless vampires don't love, they want, Drusilla was Spike's propriety for him and now he is obsess with buffy he wants her but he does not love her (i am not really good at explaining but that is pretty much how i think it is)
Im a fan spikes 'original' character but i never understood the fan romanticisation of him as a character knowing Spikes possessive and obsessive tendancies and the fact he murdered 2 vampire slayers. Hes the antithesis of what Buffy is as a show.
Spike has no soul so he can't truly love our Buffy, he's only obsessed and she deserves better than that

16:00 Yeah, great twist but the problem with truely wtf moments is that the audience may spend a moment wondering if the explanation is just bad scriptwriting, which is immersion breaking. I have been trying to think how that moment could be avoided.
I think the solution, and I think they attempted to do this, was to provide confirmation throughout that we were in good hands, that the scriptwriters were aware of the complete absurdity of such a move so our mind would not jump to that as an explanation.

I'm not a fan of Spuffy. At this point, I'm not talking spoilers. Spike did love Dru.
The old movies that had the guy kiss the girl until the girl kissed him back was severely damaging to boys watching that. It doesn't work like that.
I do love Harmony. As she is her character's age, she's grown up on the show. Though young Mercedes is in the Adamm's Family films.
