This was the first gig I ever saw at 89th Street, and what a way to start!
It had to be one of the loudest shows I ever saw and was sort of my
wakeup call to start wearing earplugs at concerts (which everyone should
do). This is one of the first tapes I'd ever done (like the 5th) and was
my first time recording in a really really small venue, ironically the
day AFTER seeing the biggest concert I'd see that year (Greta Van Fleet).
With little knowledge as to how it would work out, I decided to set my
phone with its mic on the speaker stack to my left so I could enjoy the
show without any worries. This setup worked fine for the opening act,
and the recording sounds very good to my ears. Therefore I had no
reason to believe anything would go wrong when taping Melt Banana, but
alas, something did. Leaving the phone unattended again, I was up at the
front being wowed by the amazing guitar sounds and the volume of the whole
performance, but about 6 minutes in, my phone must've slowly vibrated off
the speaker and fell onto the ground, stopping the recording in the process.
I didn't notice this had happened for a good 20 minutes, so a good chunk
of their set is missing. Once I did finally notice I started recording again
and after about a minute of panicking, set it on the stage next to
one of the monitors. The band didn't seem to mind. This is why for
over a year I have never shared this recording. Finally I have decided to
work on it and bring it to the Melt Banana community, hopefully what I
got will be enjoyable.
