Loved this post! I am from South Africa and watching your vid it was remarkable how similar that part of our history is. During the South African Boer war the English stopped all shipments to this colony and it was the French Huguenots that introduced chicory to South Africa to supplement coffee and today we have huge chicory plantations in the northern Cape. In South Africa every supermarket sells regular coffee with the local chicory/coffee blends. We even have freeze dried version in instant coffee with the 40/60 split which we all grew up with and is found in just about every South African home. Other interesting versions you find in supermarkets in South Africa are ground chicory/coffee blends in coffee bags similar to tea bags which are compostable and a great alternative to the instant tin coffee that's available everywhere.
Thanks so much for watching my friend! Ya chicory coffee has history all over the place it seems! Did not realize it was also popular in South Africa. That’s cool to hear!
Here in India we mix chicory and coffee powder ❤ it’s yummy
A friend of mine took a trip to New Orleans. She brought me back a can of Cafe du Monde. From first brew it was instant love. Since that day, coffee w chicory blend has been my go to coffee for 20+ years. I'll experiment with other blends of coffee from time to time, but imo nothing comapres to New Orleans coffee. It is simply the best.
Just subscribed! Great relay of history and herbs!❤
Thank you so much for the great video 😊. I'm drinking my chicory coffee right now. I just came back from Portugal and didn't know they also have chicory coffee. Also, love the history as my family came from south Louisiana, and three of my ancestors fought against the Brits in the Battle of New Orleans 😊😊
Good job
Nice video. I had some Cafe Du Monde chicory coffee while in New Orleans for the Coffee Expo
Nice! Ya, Cafe Du Monde is the old school! Def one of the most popular and oldest brands down here. Thanks for watching my friend!
I purchased a tin on a whim and now working on my third tin in two weeks! I usually drink organic Central American or Mexican roast that comes in whole beans and grind to each cup. But, boy do I love the Cafe Du Monde =)
I tried chicory coffee recently and I'm hooked!
BTW, did the war between the states come before or after the Civil War?
With it originating in the southern USA, it's interesting that it has become associated with France more in my mind at least. I first heard about it in Vietnam. I guess with the French ties to Louisiana it found its way to France and from France to French Indochina? I bet there's an interesting story there. That stuff is EVERYWHERE in Vietnam.
It actually started in France and other countries around that region. New Orleans being owned by the French then picked up the chicory custom as well. I may not have been clear about that in the video. Truly appreciate you watching!
Great video, Rob. A little education with my coffee. I have had Chicory coffee many times but it has been awhile. I know it tastes real good with a beignet.
Yes indeed! Been awhile since I had a Beignet. I never liked coffee and sweets but when it Rome (aka New Orleans) I comply! Haha thanks so much for watching my friend!
When I was a teenager growing up in South Louisiana and started drinking coffee myself it was my parent's coffee (French Market or RT brand usually). I didn't try regular coffee until I was in my mid 20s and I can't stand it 😂 to me it's like coffee doesn't taste right without the chicory. I still drink French Market but when I find the more expensive brands on sale I love to treat myself. Thank you for the history lesson, I enjoyed the video ☕
cool video, in slovenia some of us drink staright chicory coffe, but a 70/30 barley and chicory blend is more common
I'm originally from Michigan and ended up in Louisiana by way of Tennessee in the late 80's. I tried Community coffee w/chicory and loved it (the coffee up north is pretty bad). After moving around a bit up north again I found myself up back here in 2010, and discovered that I had lost the taste for it. Great video, as usual Rob, thanks!
Thanks! That was really interesting ❤️
Interesting video Sir, thanks for sharing.
Let me know if you have tried chicory coffee and what you think of it? Would love to hear!
Drink it. Very good
Did you see James Hoffman's recent video where he tasted some chicory coffee? The face he made is priceless! 🤐
I saw one he done a while back. Looks like he had the instant stuff! I can only imagine how bad that was. The chicory offerings from Reve and French Truck are pretty good! Not amazing but good! Haha thanks for watching my friend!
@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee - always. I LOVE your stuff.

Haha I hadn’t seen that one yet! Yes, cafe Du Monde is the old school chicory down in New Orleans. They have been there for over a century. The ones I had where much better! Haha that’s so cool he tried it though.
@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee if the ones you had in the video were not amazing but good, what should we be looking out for that would be amazing?
Great info! Should I attenpt to grow my own...how would I go about that? And how would I process it...or even utilize the while plant?
How do you rate Café Du Monde? Is it any good? What is a good way to drink it?
Try Union Coffee. Especially cold brew, it is the smoothest. Love it.
Man, I just can't get on board with chicory coffee, but maybe I just haven't tried the right one yet. Or, I should try it without a beignet, that sweetness may ruin the taste of the coffee.
Haha I can not eat sweets with Coffee. My mom does that but I just can’t. It ruins the coffee! Haha I am not a big fan of chicory but the two in this video are pretty good!
Hmm is this the secret to mellow birds?
We happy few sent me here after one of the characters complained about rich people drinking coffee while the average citizen had to drink chickory lol.
That's what the Dutch drank instead of regular coffee during the nazi occupation of 1940-1945.
We called it surrogate.
Ya I figured it’s been used all over. I think it grows around that region as well. Truly appreciate you watching my friend!
