The broken wire is known as the signal wire. It's a PWM signal, Pulse Width Modulated. Instead of varying the voltage, the ECM varies the duty cycle or the length of time the voltage is supplied. You cannot accurately measure the voltage with a volt meter because a meter isn't fast enough to capture the peak and low point. U need a scope. When that signal wire is disconnected (or broken like your Audi) the fan module goes into emergency mode and runs at top speed. Eventually, the car goes to sleep and the other 12v signal is ended. Good job, you repaired it correctly. A dealer might have charged u to replace the harness which would have been expensive and if a new harness is no longer available, the dealer will try to sell u a new car.

Hiiii!!! Perfect. This was exactly I found after watching your video. When i removed the radiator along with radiator support assembly, I forgot to unplug!! That pulled one of the wire and that’s why the fan was staying on.
Thank you so much for taking this effort of sharing the knowledge. Keep posting such videos. Cheers

Hi Paul, I have the similar issue, fans running at high speed but it happens only when the car is warmed up. I checked VCDS found the Fan speed (spec) is 0% but (actual) is 50%. I checked all temperature sensors, all looks fine. I will try to follow your video and see if it is the control wire issue. However one thing I am not sure is were is the actual fan speed readout comes from? Since seems no feedback signal from the fan control module to the ECU.

I’m having this issue with my 2018 Mercedes glc300 coupe. It has always ran fine until a couple of weeks ago. I took it to Mercedes and there aren’t any fault codes and all of the sensors are working according to them. They said wait until a check engine light comes on because they can’t find anything wrong with my car other than the fan is stuck on high. They said the same thing it must be electrical but they can’t find where it’s coming from. Will this apply to the Mercedes glc300 as well?? I’m literally having the exact same issue….The fan in the front is running on high as soon as the key is turned to the on status. Maybe I can show the mechanic at Mercedes your video.

Would it be the coolant auxiliary pump ?

It fluctuates up and down. All wiring and pins in a good condition from ECU to plug but voltage does not stay consistent. When I put the scan tool in it says my map control sensor is -48°. Can this be the reason why my fans are not coming on?

    hi, most instructive video.
i need help on this one.
    radiator fan never stop.
    ignition key removed:
    11:11
power to fan 13v(left & right)
    power from ecu(top), 0v
    signal from ecu 0v
    ignition key on:
    power to fan 13v
    power from ecu(top) 12v
signal from ecu 0.01v, looks low.
sometime fan was still going on for few minutes after engine off.
can mean power to fan with key removed is normal.
continuity test on fan module(L&R spade), yes
    can i assume dead module?
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
ignition key removed i have 2.5 amp draw from battery, slowly decreasing to 1.9 amp.
is it normal a 2 amp draw with key removed?
can a bad ecu kill the fan control module?
(low signal 0.01v from ecu, power to fan with key removed and ~2 amp draw from battery looks high)

Hey all, need some help with diagnosing cooling fans.
    Skoda Octavia 2013 mk3 ea288 clha engine :(
Cooling fans don't run when the car gets hot, especially idling/traffic. The Dash gauge doesn't go above 90 in this instance, but the VCDS temp rises steadily above it.
If I switch the HVAC on radiator fan run.
When I run FAN VCDS output test, fan spool up, seemingly at a gradually increasing speed, to a maximum of 87.5% load.
VCDS reads coolant temperature, it got to 101 deg C with no fans turning on (AC Off) before I switched the car off.
Can't work out what's going on. The car seems to know the temperature of the coolant, but doesn't switch on the fans. Fans SEEM to work ok, because AC turns them on.
Is there something else apart from the coolant temperature reading that turns on the radiator cooling fan?
    Thanks heaps.

On any engine there's a swith which turns fan on usual is on thermo housing

in this case, its the ECU that tells the fan to come on as this also controls the fan for the AC

I have a Q5 2015 premium plus. And I got a oil change from someone who changed it by the bottom of the car instead of the cypher. They had to seal it with silicone because the bottom started leaking so bad I had a puddle of oil in my garage. I took it back. They gave me my money back then the back up camera stopped working. My fans won’t go off and the are loud. I have no High temperatures no lights on yet my fans are running constantly. Then I saw I needed coolant so I got the correct coolant added it and hoped it would stop the fans.
Well fans are still running and my Q5 is sick. Audi wants to charge $180 just for diagnostics per problem!!! I’m so sick. How’d I go in for a simple oil change and all of this stuff fell apart? What’s going on?
Please hit me back. I need help
