The broken wire is known as the signal wire. It's a PWM signal, Pulse Width Modulated. Instead of varying the voltage, the ECM varies the duty cycle or the length of time the voltage is supplied. You cannot accurately measure the voltage with a volt meter because a meter isn't fast enough to capture the peak and low point. U need a scope. When that signal wire is disconnected (or broken like your Audi) the fan module goes into emergency mode and runs at top speed. Eventually, the car goes to sleep and the other 12v signal is ended. Good job, you repaired it correctly. A dealer might have charged u to replace the harness which would have been expensive and if a new harness is no longer available, the dealer will try to sell u a new car.

Great diagnostics work, and well explained. A good teacher. I have a 2.0 TDI A3. Where were you able to get access to digital Audi wiring diagrams? I desperately need this for my A3 8P. Thanks.
Hi Paul, I have the similar issue, fans running at high speed but it happens only when the car is warmed up. I checked VCDS found the Fan speed (spec) is 0% but (actual) is 50%. I checked all temperature sensors, all looks fine. I will try to follow your video and see if it is the control wire issue. However one thing I am not sure is were is the actual fan speed readout comes from? Since seems no feedback signal from the fan control module to the ECU.

I’m having this issue with my 2018 Mercedes glc300 coupe. It has always ran fine until a couple of weeks ago. I took it to Mercedes and there aren’t any fault codes and all of the sensors are working according to them. They said wait until a check engine light comes on because they can’t find anything wrong with my car other than the fan is stuck on high. If I switch the HVAC on radiator fan run.
When I run FAN VCDS output test, fan spool up, seemingly at a gradually increasing speed, to a maximum of 87.5% load.
VCDS reads coolant temperature, it got to 101 deg C with no fans turning on (AC Off) before I switched the car off.
Can't work out what's going on. The car seems to know the temperature of the coolant, but doesn't switch on the fans. Fans SEEM to work ok, because AC turns them on.
