Good advice, mate. I'm beginning to think that the best advice to new owners is to spend 2 years and £8k carefully restoring every single aspect of the car. They would then have an "as new" car, that will never let them down, but it will still only be worth £3k. :-)

Thanks for a really comprehensive video. Really handy.
CAn you give any more detail on the running of the fan control module? I’ve been told the relay that switches on/off the magnetic clutch on the aircon compressor is contained in the unit. At what stage does it switch on during the aircon startup?
Reason being my compressor clutch is not being engaged and I’m not seeing any difference (in terms of voltage) to the compressor even if the aircon is on. My car has a failed slow speed fan on the larger of the 2 fans (right hand fan nearest the battery) which I will replace but the left smaller fan (furthest from the battery) does spin at the slower speed shortly after the aircon is switched on… but I’m not seeing the compressor clutch engage. What are the steps the car goes thru to start the AC? Is there a way to test the ac high pressure switch to confirm there is enough pressure in the system to switch the compressor on…
Where is he AC high pressure switch and what role does the FCM take in the AC startup? Are there any other modules to check as part of the AC startup/running steps?
Thanks again for your video. It’s helped me lots.

The slow speed doesn’t usually come on until 95 or above, they are. Controlled by a thermal switch which is mounted in the radiator. This could well be faulty. It shouldn’t be losing water, you could have a number of issues causing that but I would suggest looking at 1 thing at a time.

Yeah that part has failed on mine. You can tell by the grayish foam which comes out from the air vents when the ac is running. There are two flaps which control the hot/cold airflow and that foam is the insulator. When it’s gone, the flaps don’t seal properly causing the issue. But I have to say, mine’s busted for about a year now and all I had to do was refill the ac freon. I live in a Mediterranean country and now it’s cold af in my cabin during the summer time.

Just working through these issues this week. Check this out.... large fan not working, ONLY small fan would engage (with A/C on or when coolant reached temperature threshold). Jumped the thermal switch, had both high and low speeds on both fans (conclusion bad thermal switch). A/C wouldn't blow cold. A/C compressor was only getting 9.5v...but was I was getting 12v entering the FCM. Swapped out the FCM (knockoff) - result was NEITHER large or small fan would run BUT I did had 12v at the compressor. Applied 12v directly (bypassing FCM) to the A/C compressor, clutch engaged (freon level was fine and small fan was running) but would not build high pressure in the system (conclusion- bad compressor.....and bad FCM). Was driving myself crazy trying think this was only one issue......all wiring/fuses were fine no corrosion or signs of overheating ......you must have been feeling my pain and decided to make this video....hahaha.

@@victormagana1641 Sounds like you are presenting multiple issues that are not related to one another. Have you had the car scanned with VAG software? If not, this should be the first step. Did you get a code for the MAF sensor? If so, it's a straight forward swap. The fans cutting out when hot is very odd and can be caused by multiple issues. Check all the connections at the fuse box on top of the battery. If BOTH fans are cutting out, I would suspect a FCM or a Temperature Control Switch, but you should check voltage at the fans when they cut out. Voltage at the fans would point to the fans being bad. No voltage to the fans would point to an issue further up the electrical circuit.

Hi all, I am cutting and pasting this from a recent FB post to get some opinions, maybe even from the man himself, anyway... here goes... when the temp reads 95/96 (via 49c) the drivers side fan kicks in for a little a bit and then shuts off again it does this periodically when the vehicle is stationary which is what I would expect and deem this to be normal behavior. The left or passenger side fan I would assume is the AC fan ? It isn't coming on at any point even if I have the temp set to LO and Auto, the air coming out of the vents isn't cold, that is one issue. The second issue is that when driving the temp drops from 90 to 70-75 very quickly and stays there until I become stationary again at which point it will creep back up to 90 over a few minutes and eventually to 95 and turn the driver side fan on. This doesn't seem like a faulty sensor but more like a faulty thermostat which is staying open and letting the air cooled coolant continuously circulate when driving. We don't see this behaviour when stationary as it can control shutting the fan on and off, obviously the air flow can't be shut off when the vehicle is moving hence the continuously low temp. That's my logic anyway...

    -switch in the radiator
-temp sensor on the side of the engine
    -module underneath battery
-fuses on top of battery are all okay
Have tried to connect the fans directly as described and then both speeds do work. Temperature on the dash goes up to 90 normally and car does not overheat (so far).
All this is with ignoring the A/C (this car has the older knobs, not the climate control so there is no "econ") as there seems to be some damage to the condenser so this system is currently not in use.

I´ve checked both fans turn on (low speed) by themself at iddle and temperature stays at 90º, I also triggered the fans manually bridging the radiator thermo-switch connector. Both fans work in low and high speed.

Both the dashboard cluster and the heater controls measure the temperature from the same place, the temp sensor on the passenger side of the engine. If your fans are not coming on when the car gets hot and the Aircon is off it is likely that the thermal switch in your radiator is failing or failed, this can be proved by removing it and then sorting out the two pins and see if the fans come on if they do then is the switch if they do not then he could be the control unit underneath the battery

Yeah you can hear it. It’s not loud but it’s obvious. You can also test it by starting your car leave it running on idle and open your bonnet and feel the pump. It should be running

@@TheParrottBros I've just tested the fan switch plug. Jumping the low speed pin and there is nothing. Jumping the high speed pin and they work. Does this point towards the resistors in the fans being at fault?

@@chrismawa that’s correct mate, the slow speed is effectively burnt out. So you can either Google slow speed tan resistor mod or replace the fan pack

Slightly the opposite to the issues you explained here but I was wondering if you could help? My tt simply won't get to temperature! Confirmed with 49c trick, thermostat and temp sender changed.
Can't seem to get above 77 degrees even sat in traffic 😫

Thats a strange issue, have you used a genuine temp sensor? when was the water pump and Cambelt last done?

Both Fans work for me when AC is on but fans not working when A/C is off. Low fan speed doesn't come on by itself. Will the radiator switch that I cross turn the low speed fan on show that it's just that radiator sensor that is bad if I know that both fans run when A/C is on?
Thanks for this video I love my mk1 tt.

On the Radiator plug below battery. I checked my plug for voltage and only one of the two/three configurations is showing 12 V voltage on the Three Socket Plug on the Harness. The other Two configs on the connector sockets show Open (.02 ohms).
I did a Jumper as well in both configurations on the Harness connection and only One way works by firing up both fans with the A/C On or Off.
The Module is New and the heat sensor plugs are newer.

2001 TT W/ ATC motor. Intermittent cut-out when getting on it. Feels like its about ready to go to moon, then cuts out leaving motor feeling like its wound up but going nowhere. Ideas??

Does it literally feel like someone’s pulled boost away / cut the boost. Sounds like you’re going into limp mode, I would look at the N 75 valve to start with
