Hello! My name is Kristen, I am 22 years old, from Sacramento CA, and I am graduating in the Spring with my BA in Psychology. I created this channel for three reasons that are very close to my heart. One, to help others be able to tell their stories and be advocates for mental health, to give recovery tips and tricks to help others find the help they need, and to spread awareness for mental health issues to fight the stigma surrounding it. The more we talk about mental illness the more normalized it will be in our society and the more people will not be ashamed to get help!

I have Borderline Personality Disorder, and let me tell you, it's more painful for someone to abandon you than it is for someone to die. And boy does splitting happen to me. A few days ago i became very negative of myself just by hearing a conversation that didn't even have anything to do with me. Splitting also applies to the other person, where one moment you really like them, then something can set you off and you'll hate them.

Jerms Mason my daughter has bpd, bipolar and schizophrenia. She either loves me or hates me. It's very difficult. She thinks I isolate and abandon her, just because I go about my day, doing my own thing. Like she expects me to know what she has on her mind.

When it comes down to it, it's really sad to see someone with BPD being incapable of seeing that someone's choices don't reflect on the BPD person's self.
Take a deep breath when this happens, and realize that you are in control of your own emotions if you choose to be.

Yes, It's called BPD in the UK too. It depends on how the doctor wants to diagnose you. Whatever they call you, it's horrendous. I was diagnosed in 2013.

LikeKristen he's wrong his doctor is probably the only one to name it that. I know people with BPD and the doctors named it as such they may have said its an unstable emotional disorder to explain it but in the UK its official name is BPD.

I'm a recovered borderline. I got the best of both: I struggled with classic, and eventually downgraded to quiet borderline as I matured. I first started displaying symptoms when I was 14 or 15. They were subtle at first, but progressed into the whole thing. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder by multiple psychiatrists, and only received one diagnosis of BPD when I was in the mental hospital. I don't think I'm bipolar, and I can honestly say that I do NOT exhibit symptoms of BPD anymore. It CAN go away, if you get the right treatment for it. It doesn't last forever! I feel all of your struggles! Stay strong, if you want help, you'll get it. If you want to recover, it's possible!

How long have you had severe mental problems and for how long have you been in therapy? If it hasn't been that long, that could explain why doctors are reluctant to diagnose you with bpd. And a lot of doctors don't know very well about bpd. The stereotype that everyone with bpd runs around with a razor blade threatening suicide if they don't get enough attention is still pretty wide spread. Seek out a doctor who actually knows a thing or two about bpd and take the scid test for bpd.

    • @vihaze6725
      @vihaze6725 6 лет назад +5

You go to a doctor. The chances are if you've seen more than one (you said 'doctors' as a plural) and they don't think it's BPD, then it probably isn't. BPD is pretty over-diagnosed, despite what an earlier commenter said.

I have BPD... Personal experience for me is that CBT was useless and standard counselling was useless too. All it did was tell me how I should think and them telling me the root cause of the illness. To which I was like "tell me something I dont know, how do I fix it?" I'm currently going through Psychotherapy privately as the NHS sucks balls due to our government cutting funding and referrals taking far too long to get to people who need the help and after my referral took 6months to come, my financial circumstances changed so I gave up told myself to "man-up" and went back to work. It's taken me over a decade, a loss of a fiancee and a second partner to move 117miles away for me to get to this point.
You hit the nail on the head that some therapy options work for some and not others. However, with an open mind anything is possible.
      Excerpt from source: helpguide.org
There are 9 symptoms for BPD to be diagnosed and you must present 5 of these symptoms (I personally fit all 9)
      The 9 symptoms of BPD
Fear of abandonment. People with BPD are often terrified of being abandoned or left alone. Even something as innocuous as a loved one getting home late from work or going away for the weekend can trigger intense fear. This leads to frantic efforts to keep the other person close. You may beg, cling, start fights, jealously track your loved one’s movements, or even physically block the other person from leaving. Unfortunately, this behavior tends to have the opposite effect-driving others away.
Unstable relationships. People with BPD tend to have relationships that are intense and short-lived. You may fall in love quickly, believing each new person is the one who will make you feel whole, only to be quickly disappointed. Your relationships either seem perfect or horrible, with nothing in between. Your lovers, friends, or family members may feel like they have emotional whiplash from your rapid swings between idealization and devaluation, anger, and hate.
Unclear or unstable self-image. When you have BPD, your sense of self is typically unstable. Sometimes you may feel good about yourself, but other times you hate yourself, or even view yourself as evil. You probably don’t have a clear idea of who you are or what you want in life. As a result, you may frequently change jobs, friends, lovers, religion, values, goals, and even sexual identity.
Impulsive, self-destructive behaviors. If you have BPD, you may engage in harmful, sensation-seeking behaviors, especially when you’re upset. You may impulsively spend money you can’t afford, binge eat, drive recklessly, shoplift, engage in risky sex, or overdo it with drugs or alcohol. These risky behaviors may help you feel better in the moment, but they hurt you and those around you over the long-term.
Self-harm. Suicidal behavior and deliberate self-harm is common in people with BPD. Suicidal behavior includes thinking about suicide, making suicidal gestures or threats, or actually carrying out a suicide attempt. Self-harm includes all other attempts to hurt yourself without suicidal intent. Common forms of self-harm include cutting and burning.
Extreme emotional swings. Unstable emotions and moods are common with BPD. One moment, you may feel happy, and the next, despondent. Little things that other people brush off can send you into an emotional tailspin. These mood swings are intense, but they tend to pass fairly quickly (unlike the emotional swings of depression or bipolar disorder), usually lasting just a few minutes or hours.
Chronic feelings of emptiness. People with BPD often talk about feeling empty, as if there’s a hole or a void inside them. At the extreme, you may feel as if you’re “nothing” or “nobody.” This feeling is uncomfortable, so you may try to fill the hole with things like drugs, food, or sex. But nothing feels truly satisfying.
Explosive anger. If you have BPD, you may struggle with intense anger and a short temper. You may also have trouble controlling yourself once the fuse is lit-yelling, throwing things, or becoming completely consumed by rage. It’s important to note that this anger isn’t always directed outwards. You may spend a lot of time being angry at yourself.
Feeling suspicious or out of touch with reality. People with BPD often struggle with paranoia or suspicious thoughts about others’ motives. When under stress, you may even lose touch with reality-an experience known as dissociation. You may feel foggy, spaced out, or as if you’re outside your own body.

Aaron, the GP is your first point of call now. If you feel like you've been fobbed off, get a second opinion. If you truly believe it, you can get the diagnosis you require. From there the options for therapy lay themselves out for you. Psychotherapy, CBT, DBT etc.

I've been thinking that i have BPD for multiple weeks now and wherever i go, whatever article or youtube video, they all say that self-diagnosing is bad and if you dont see a therapist who can diagnose you, you dont have it.

SO many videos about people with BPD on RUclips are about how they're "manipulative/dangerous/undeserving of love" and it made me afraid for my friends with BPD because of the stigma around it. I’ve cried so much because I have every single symptom mentioned and it is something I have experienced, done myself, or to others, and I’m relieved to find out it’s something others struggle with as well. I can put a name on it, I thought I was just crazy. Thank you for this video.

Great video, I love it. People, please, we are not monsters. Of the dozends of people with BPD maybe 2 people have been the aggressive type and pretty much had to leave after a few days due to their behaviour. I guss those are the types that end up in the forensic ward.
I did DBT twice and sadly the skills didn't help at all. What improved is my understanding of why I'm feeling that way, why I'm splitting and that it's not good; I can actually actively work against it. Still, in a crisis NOTHING can stop me and I'm glad I can go to a clinic nearby for short stationary stays.

    Thanks for the encouragement!
I have figured soon enough how pointless it is to try to explain my condition to friends and family and people in general. They can only relate from their level of perception, judging from their criteria, clearly surpassed by the problem. It only leads to more despair and incomprehension.
So far there is only two types of people who can understand: specialists who understand in theory, and other borderlines who understand in practice; but still, other borderlines are often less severe cases than I am, being capable to have a job, being engaged, etc., which I am absolutely incapable of (so far).
Your advice about seeking help is the best!

Thank you. I´m glad people make videos about BPD because it´s one of the most mistunderstanded mental ilnesses. I was diagnosed two years ago, but I had many mental issues even before that. I have spent three months in mental hospital, went to the therapy and took medication. I still have to fight with all my strenght with myself to not start to destroying myself as I used to. It´s hard thing to live with and sometimes it´s way harder for people around me, which makes me feel like I should have never been born. But I learnt to cope with it and don´t think about every single mistake I do. This disorder makes you think that everybody leave you now or later even if it´s family. I´ts constant fear of abandonment which drive you crazy together with anxiety, mental breakdowns, feelings of emptiness, loneliness and identity crisis. BPD is like mysterious box of mental issues...never know what will you get today.

I do often find myself splitting people, yet i don't "forget the good things" people have done for me. and often later on i will rethink the situation or give someone the benefit of the doubt. But initially splitting ppl and even myself is something i do a lot. I am not diagnosed with this, but i have a suspicion i have it. But i feel like some symptoms have such rigid rules set in place that i feel like if i don't 100% agree with everything then i must not have it. So can u still have bpd if you split ppl but later on rethink it and realize the people are just human? or do you simply not have any control over it and are incapable of giving ppl the benefit of the doubt?

    • @xLenatan
      @xLenatan 6 лет назад +8

Ashley Thomas in my experience people with bpd "split back" or think rationally again later so that wouldn't be something to rule people out. If splitting is your only symptom then you probably do not have bpd as splitting is just a coping mechanism that anyone can have.

Hindsight is 20/20. That's still BPD. If you can't see the grey area in the moment due to your own emotional volatility, that's still looking at the world through a black and white lens, and is likely BPD.
For someone with this disorder, you will literally be their worst enemy one moment, and their best friend the next. They can rationalize "the benefit of the doubt" and "both good and bad traits" - but they can't act on their rational decisions, it's all emotive.
A more normal person can give someone they hate the benefit if the doubt if they so choose, or stop talking to someone they like because they realize they're a sociopath.
I've noticed BPDs often hang around sociopaths, because of how they choose to portray themselves is appealing. A BPD can rationalize that this is manipulative, but because they are giving off emotionally positive "vibes", will often continue to interact with them.

I've been waiting for this video for a long time, so I'm happy you made it. However, I need to let you know that BPD can't be "recovered" from. It stays there /forever/. I know this because A.) I have it B.) I've researched it and C.) My psychaitrist, counselor, and psychology teachers all have told me this. I can learn how to regulate my over reactive behavior and try to correct myself when things start to go not in a good way. You can learn how to avoid triggers and explain to people how you are so they know what to do and what not to do, but there absolutely is no "it'll go away" type of recovery.

Jesus this is so relatable to my life I'm basically crying... I've known for a few weeks I have bpd and it's still hard to cope with. I didn't know that the good or bad thing I do you called splitting was something related to bpd. I split, though, and I don't quite have BPD - I feel it's pretty normal for human beings to judge anyone based on something bad they have done if they can't see the full picture of what that is, even if they have known that person for a long time. For instance, my BPD partner has done so much good for my life, and I paint them as someone I trust and love unconditionally... then I have a negative feeling or they do something that to me in one moment (without knowing the full picture) seems negative, so I start associating them as completely negative and decieving but when I take myself away from that state of mind and chillax, I start to remember all the positive things they have done and see them positively. I think this is normal, but it can be accentuated when you put a highly sensitive and insecure person next to a detached and insensitive person. Any normal person can shift their perspective on a situation and paint it either good or bad - people rarely paint things 50/50, it's a biological defense mechanism. You either find something good for you and you stay with it or bad for you and you get rid of it. A non BPD person can suddenly shift perspectives on how their BPD partner is treating them - one minute they can believe the BPD partner is okay and can be tolerated because they love them, the next they can believe they are being trapped... same basic principle.

Thanks for the info, learned some new things about the disorder. My therapist was thinking I was either bipolar or I had BPD. I do know that I have Severe OCD. Mental illness can be really hard to pinpoint, don’t feel discouraged if your treatment seems to be taking a long time because I felt and still feel the same way. Some things are worth waiting for. Hang in there. I’ll try to practice what I preach as well.

Your videos are great, but a quick tip (if you feel like it) would be to look at the camera (or some part of the camera if staring at the lens gets awkward) when you're reading from an outside resource. You could memorize your script in short bursts and then edit the clips together. Great work, but if you ever feel like putting a bit of polish on your content, I hope this is a useful pointer (maybe?).

In the UK, the mental health services has stopped diagnosing BPD as that name. I think (I may be wrong) it is now called neurotic emotional regulation disorder or something like that. Btw, I got this info from my mum who works with people to help diagnose mental disorders. Also, the UK wants to increase the diagnostic criteria for autism, so only people with very severe symptoms can get diagnosed. They have already stopped diagnosing aspergers. It's mad...

I am not diagnosed with BPD, but I have a suspicion I have it, ever since I remember I´ve always been very very emotional & impulsive, although this used to be awesome when I was a kid, right know is very frustrating, also I tent to sabotage myself a lot, even family relations I’ll always end up ruining them, but I HATE to be lonely & it’s always a challenge for me because I don’t want to be hurt & I always feel I’m not good enough, or I have this feeling everyone will end up leaving so I close completely.
I’m also angry almost all the time, I’ve learn how to hid it but the feeling is always there, my coping mechanism is crying, literally, I’ll watch sad heartbreaking movies just to free a little bit of the pressure.
When you talk about Splitting I related so much, because for me if you do one ‘’bad’’ thing to me, then I’ll cut you out of my life, yet when I really care about someone they can hurt be over and over again & I will always forgive them, but every time I do that I feel like I’m losing a part of me, I don’t know if that makes sense?
Again I have no idea if I have BDP or I’m just weird, but the more I read about it I feel like now I have an explanation for certain things I do, think or feel, I’ve also read that people who had been bullyed or lived traumatic experiences could have it. but who knows maybe I'm wrong. Sorry for the long post
    Love your videos Kris.💜
