Rumor is he played a 6A mouthpiece. I was not able to find one but got a 5A or 7A I forget and man, plugged that thing into my horn and it was Chetsville. So if you play consider this.

Chet’s breath support is amazing, even hunched over in a deep soft chair. Every entrance is perfect and supported, even at low volume. And of course, he is the very definition of “doing it with your eyes closed!”

I've listened to this solo at least 10 times and every time I hear I'm floored. He simply OWNS harmonic structure. I think it may be the most brilliant solo I've ever heard and he tosses it of as if he were ordering a salad.

I wish I could understand what it is that makes his playing so beautiful. He seems to be using the same sort of concepts as other players but there’s just that mysterious quality of genius in his playing. Would love to ask him how he thinks about melody.

He said in many interviews that he played 100% by ear. I think that freed him from having to nail the changes and allowed him to make more colourful note choices. Either way I think he is the greatest melodic improviser of the 20th century.

He bought this trumpet, a Buescher Aristocrat, at a pawn shop and held onto it for several years. It's a student level horn but he made many if his greatest recordings playing it. I've had a couple of them over the years. The horn tends to the airy Chet tone but he played it with unmatched genius.

Granted many will think this a really stupid question, but taking all elements and factors into account, isn’t Miles Davis hands down more supremely gifted than Chet Baker? I don’t want to incite a riot here. In the final analysis, I suppose it’s all a matter of personal preference... and respecting one another’s personal tastes. My favorite trumpeter happens to be Clifford Brown!
