What a shame he died so young. His successor Stan Getz also passed away early. I wish more people played that tenor like this. Most musicians just bark on the thing and play it rough, it sounds like a buzzsaw, abrasive and unpleasant. Coltrane and Ike Quebec were particularly bad about that. Sims, Getz, Lester Young, Babe Russin even, they all played it so smoothly and beautifully. They're technique made it sound like an alto sax and not a tenor!

I always felt like Chet got up at midnight, got a shower, had some breakfast, a smoke, and whatever else he did, then took a cab to do his 2 a.m. set. This is just not meant to start until then.

Na primeira vez que eu vi isso, não pude acreditar que teria o privilégio de ver mais de 50min de Chet assim, tão bem filmado, tão de perto, em uma atmosfera tão íntima, com Michel Graillier, tocando maravilhosamente. Um amigo meu tem esse vinil. E pelo que consta essa gravação esteve perdida por muito tempo. Um sonho real!
