Corneille Guillaume Beverloo was born in Liège (Belgium), of Dutch parents. In his childhood, his family moved to Holland, first to Haarlem and then to Amsterdam where he occasionally attended drawing lessons at the Royal Academy of Arts.
After the liberation in 1945, he had his first exhibition in Amsterdam.
Corneille participated in the creation of the Dutch Experimental group 1948 (Revue Reflex). He was also a member/creator of the international COBRA group which wxisted between 1948 and 1950 (issuing of 8 editions of the Cobra paper).
In 1950 he made Paris his home.
He has participated in numerous exhibitions all over the world. These include his own as well as jointly with other artists.
Corneille's works appear in major Museum of Modern Art and with private collectors in Europe, Latin America, the USA and Japan.
"At first I was very enthusiastic about the spontaneous and natural character of the Universe of children, in the same way as in the paintings by Klee and Miro. Spontaneity is the keyword of the COBRA group. After numerous expeditions to Africa and the close contact with its desert, my art became strongly influences by this absolute mineral world. After travels to Mexico, Brazil and the Caribbean Islands in 1968, the human boy reappears. In 1975 this subject was definitely reinforced. Today my paintings are inhabited by women and the rich, luxuriant abundance of the tropical forms and colours." (Corneille)
