I can’t believe MMF294, who is my friend in real life, only started watching doctor who cause I forced them to and now here they are achieving more than I could ever manage
Hi, Josh! Thanks for covering my Marco Polo animation. I'm currently working on Mighty Kublai Khan (episode 6) at the moment. To answer your question, I make the animations in black and white and then colour the thumbnails to make them stand out more.
Having my animation included was such an honour!! I animated a scene that existed in live action because it resonated with me and felt iconic, otherwise I would have loved to animate something that was lost. It was done with Blender and rendered using the Eevee engine, which I somewhat regret as it may have looked better with the unbiased engine. I agree that the Web of Feat 3D animation didn’t really work but 3D, especially in organic characters is HARD so I don’t have any grievances against that!!
There was actually more to the Pyro Flame Dalek scene than in the final upload. I animated about 10 seconds more of it but decided to stop the render as it was taking far more time than I projected!! I wonder if I still have the original files, couldn’t say as I am in Japan atm.
That Space Pirates one towards the end was so impressive! I want to actually watch that story now with THAT animation!! Loved that first Web Of Fear one. It looked so much more impressive than what we got! A great video, Josh. Thank you
As a former artist, who veered more into writing in later years. The distinct 3D artwork in Dalek Master Plan, Wheel in Space and Celestial Toymaker looks really visually impressive.
Thank-you for putting this together, Josh! I remember about x years ago RUclips offered a basic free animation program. No idea if it still exists, but I remember spending a few hours trying to put together a missing scene, before deciding it was all too hard. To anyone who is doing these animations "for fun" - hats off to them!
Hi Snares! Can you look into the recent discovery of the truck worth of tapes of 60s-80s shows (Hence it has a high chance of containing Doctor Who) that was donated to a University, the topic is really interesting!
As someone who has been making Doctor Who related art/animation for over a decade, this was such a treat. Of course, Shada now has an official animation but the take my friend and I did where you get to see continuing adventures of Professor Chronotis will forever hold my heart.
I just want to give a shoutout to Android65mar. They haven’t posted any videos in recent years (still active in comments, though), and a lot of them are dated in places, but they are such a pioneer of Doctor Who fan animations on RUclips and a big part of my early years on the fandom that it’s worth giving them at least a brief mention.
Thanks for making this video, Josh. I didn't even know most of these existed and they all look so good! If anyone can make 'The Space Pirates' a memorable and good story it's Maddox, hope he does more of it in future. :)
I quite like the chibi version of Marco Polo. It's so unique for Doctor Who animation. I'll definitely go find the animator and subscribe to them and give them praise on their channel.
Having a typical cut back and forth will never be enough for a Josh Snares video, there has to be the animations diagetically running on a tbh behind them as they talk
The Janjay Masterplan clip is jaw dropping. Watching the evolution of these is really exciting. Potential is the word, isn't it? So impressed by anybody giving it a go.
The thing about early 60s DW is that there wasn't a great deal of movement anyway. You couldn't swing a cat in those old studios. That first Marco Polo looks awesome. Thank you for highlighting these. I wouldn't have seen them otherwise. Another great video, Josh. The sound is better now too. Keep them coming mate! 👏👏
Another great video. You've actually given me the impetus to finally go back & watch the Hartnell episodes. I've been a Who fan since the early 80s, but never felt the need to go back and watch the series earliest incarnation. I'm glad I did. Though I have never been a big fan of the historical episodes, I've had a lot of fun seeing Hartnells impudent, capricious & feisty Doctor. I have found myself echoing his almost constant punctuation of every sentence with either "Hmm?" or "Mmm?" though lol
Another fantastic video, Josh. This time highlighting the amazing untapped enthusiasm and dedication of fan animatiors. I'm fortunate enough to have seen a few and really enjoyed them, including your Out of Time. I really hope to see another from you, and hope that some of the other contributors might be given the opportunity for bigger and better things in the future. Preferably official Doctor Who animations! Keep 'em coming, Josh! 🥰👍
I like this because you actually clarify why I like certain animations such as the 3d ones. I found it difficult to specify why I like the art on the Dalek Masterplan 3d clips version as opposed to the Web of Fear ep 3 ones. Your enthusiasm about all the work is catchy too.
I didn't know about most of these and I'm excited to watch some! Also, I love to see how fair you are to everyone involved. These are great efforts and you acknowledge the hard work involved. Great video.
These are pretty darn good. I'm sure if the fan community organised, we could get some full episodes out, and maybe, possibly, complete all the missing episodes. It would require a lot of people working together on a single project, but I believe it could be done. We could assign a team to make the assets, another team could be responsible for the animation, with each person taking on a specific set as it were, to make it easier. Another with editing. Down side, is that I wouldn't be able to get this off the ground, because I have zero talent in animation, but I would love to see such organisation from the community to fill these gaps.
Another one I'd love to see in full is an animation made by Mike's star art on RUclips. He did a really nice version of the end of the feast of Steven.
Super interesting topic, there are so many fan animations out there that I had no idea about! I wonder if there are many other Big Finish animations, or even telesnap-style videos lying around on RUclips to be discovered?
Thanks Josh, this is such a fabulous tribute to many of the fan made animations out there. Having a great time going through the list watching all these wonderfully talented creations. Here's hoping some extra comments and likes will give new motivation for them to do more! 👍 Also thoroughly enjoying the re-newed effort of your own channel this year! Great content, always looking forward to the next one, thanks! 😀🤗👍
It would be fun if bbc would take some of the completed fan animations and put them in the collection releases that they don’t have animations done for
Another great video Josh, I didn't know of the existence of most of these so it was fascinating to see the array of creativity and diversity of animation styles!
I had to smile when you discussed Garrett Gilchrist's efforts on "the Smugglers" at the 11:38 mark. Why? Well, the console in those shots is mine, a mesh I constructed long ago, around 2004 and shared with the Poser community. I recognize it because it has certain inaccuracies that serve almost like a fingerprint. My goal was to sculpt the modified Kenneth Sharpe design that debuted in "The Invisible Enemy", but at the time I had limited references, primarily the "Doctor Who Technical Manual". Thus, I had to guess some details, and other aspects, like the innards of the central transparent column, I just went in my own direction. While there are now far detailed and screen accurate console meshes available for third parties, I still get the warm fuzzies when somebody opts for my meager efforts from nearly 20 years ago.
This is a terrific smorgasbord of animation styles, and a tribute to the many fans who SO want animated releases to complete a full run of the original series. I'm all for the overly stylized version of Celestial Toymaker!
It makes you wonder why [over the last 20yrs years] the BBC hasn't reached out to such talented and passionate animators as these, bring them into the fold, build on the groundwork they've already done, realize a saleable DVD product that wasn't such a huge, ground-up undertaking OR [more likely] written off the expense of various ground-up story animations. After all, the greatest strength of 'Who' is its fanbase... I'd happily part with cash for an official DVD of the UCLAN live recreation of MTTU [with the interviews / behind the scenes stuff], for example. I noticed you found it difficult to look the camera straight in the eye when you mentioned your hopes for The Celestial Toymaker - it is almost as if there is more happening than you are letting on... [the footage of that clown doll growing in size is superb!]
I'm an animator in my spare time... No way I could at my current level animate something of that magnitude by myself, so to see people going for it is pretty impressive stuff!
As a jaded older primate, I no longer do anything representational, but back in my childhood and teens it was always attempts to capture likenesses and do alternative bookcovers (in the way fans now do - rather more impressively - boxset artwork). There is very obvious potential here and it always baffles me that the beeb, given the amount of man hours fans will put into things like this, don''t call on their services; whether it be the animations or even colourisation.
I have seen a few animations made using a sims-esc video game, that animations version of The Crusades is funny because there is a scene where Barbara is captured, escapes & then gets captured again ~ her escape is that she pushes 1 of the guards into the others and runs but I guess that isn't possible in the game so instead of the animated video game Barbara starts punching the guard in the face! I can't remember where it is tho or what they used to make the animations
I never got much into the 1st and 2nd Doctor’s episodes due to a lot of them missing. I hope there’s more animations in the future because I feel like I’m missing out on some masterpieces like The Daleks’ Masterplan. I hope we find the real ones but I really like the animations. I really like the creativity of these creators. Maybe they might get noticed and BBC will give them a official release.
Thanks for this one, I now want to watch these episodes for myself, if nothing else the BBC should show official animators the fan animation just before they pick up their mousse warning them that the finished article is not meant to behave as a Cubist painting by Picasso, plus classes in human anatomy and lighting would be a direct benefit of the viewer.
With all the mod tools available for Skyrim, I'm surprised no one has ever done a missing episode in the Skyrim game engine. I know there is already a TARDIS mod.
I wonder if someone made such a brilliant animation for missing episodes, so like The Crusades, if someone animated the missing episodes, could they sell them to the BBC for a release?
Some really nice projects there, I think the Deepfake has a lot of potential for some more complex stories that otherwise would be difficult to animate due to cost such as The Highlanders
I imagine with advances in technology we should all see some incredible animations in the near future as it becomes easier and easier to animate stories. While it might be a long way away it would be incredible if you could use AI to generate animation in the same way we can use AI to generate art.
Hoping AI will soon dramatically reduce the costs of creating these - training sets of all available Hartnell/Troughton stories being used to recreate missing episodes?
Brilliant Video Josh! I kind of want to see all of them just done! Officially or not. Surely after 50 years audio and copyright should be abolished. But I hope this video encourages these guys to finish off these projects. Dino Puffs Toymaker is something I am keeping an eye on.
All such distinctive animation styles! In particular, the stylistic choice for "Toymaker" is so clever for the story! Amazing what fans can do! 😃
You're amazing. I'm saying this because my depression is kicking my ass I love to make others feel happy when I'm not.
I can’t believe MMF294, who is my friend in real life, only started watching doctor who cause I forced them to and now here they are achieving more than I could ever manage
hi
The Celestial Toymaker fan animation is easily a 10/10, along with the Mission To The Unknown!
The Celestial Toymaker is truly celestial (does that sound right?)
You're amazing. I'm saying this because my depression is kicking my ass I love to make others feel happy when I'm not.
Hi, Josh!
Thanks for covering my Marco Polo animation. I'm currently working on Mighty Kublai Khan (episode 6) at the moment.

Great job! Thank you for doing it.

I was drunk writing this so idk how helpful it was but I loved the vid, and again, very appreciative of your inclusion of my vid
There was actually more to the Pyro Flame Dalek scene than in the final upload. I animated about 10 seconds more of it but decided to stop the render as it was taking far more time than I projected!! I wonder if I still have the original files, couldn’t say as I am in Japan atm.
that was done with eevee!, that just makes me even more impressed at how detailed it is!
I just watched through all of what MMF294 has for Marco Polo so far, thank you so much for making these more well known ^-^
It'd be cool to see some of the animations through your vintage TV :)
The Celestial Toymaker animation is just top notch, I love it so much. I wish for more
Doctor Who fans are the best! They do it for the passion.
That Space Pirates one towards the end was so impressive! I want to actually watch that story now with THAT animation!! Loved that first Web Of Fear one. It looked so much more impressive than what we got!
A great video, Josh. Thank you
I'd love to see these animators take an episode each of DMP and give each one their own style! I can dream, right?
This would be really cool! If it ever happens, I'm calling dibs on The Feast of Steven.
The yetis are always so cute and cuddly.
As a former artist, who veered more into writing in later years. The distinct 3D artwork in Dalek Master Plan, Wheel in Space and Celestial Toymaker looks really visually impressive.

As a stop motion animator, I’ve often wondered how that’d look as a medium for a reconstruction.
I still remember that I subscribed to your channel because of your Big Finish animations, you know...
Thanks for making this video, Josh. I didn't even know most of these existed and they all look so good!
If anyone can make 'The Space Pirates' a memorable and good story it's Maddox, hope he does more of it in future. :)

Having a typical cut back and forth will never be enough for a Josh Snares video, there has to be the animations diagetically running on a tbh behind them as they talk
audio is silent due to copyright
Thank you for mentioning me Josh. I'm loving the sheer variety of fan animations out there.
So I immediately subscribed to Conga Line Monkey. I want to see their Marco Polo in full. 👀
Edit: I've subbed to them ALL! Heck yes!
Thank you for mentioning my video. I thought you might have forgotten about it since I never got around to making the rest of Marco Polo.
The Janjay Masterplan clip is jaw dropping. Watching the evolution of these is really exciting. Potential is the word, isn't it? So impressed by anybody giving it a go.
Lighting lighting lighting. I’m obsessed
Omg, it's truly an honor to be mentioned in this! Thanks so much for making my day! I want to finish off underwater menace now.
I hope you do! It looks very promising
another great video!

Your videos are always high quality. Love it.
I love seeing my favourite story get some much needed attention
Fantastic presentation

Another fantastic video. Most of those styles I would love to see on a full animation
I didn't know about most of these and I'm excited to watch some! Also, I love to see how fair you are to everyone involved. These are great efforts and you acknowledge the hard work involved. Great video.
Great to see so many creators expanding the lost episode envelope!
Hi Josh - Thank you for another fantastic video.

I really like the 3d animation of Dalek Master Plan! I sure hope this style is continued! You rule Josh my man!!!! Cheers from Quebec!
Another amazing watch! Love the channel it’s always so informative and never dull! Thanks Josh for the great content ❤
Another one I'd love to see in full is an animation made by Mike's star art on RUclips. He did a really nice version of the end of the feast of Steven.
I came back after seeing the fan animation of Marco polo and I actually like the animation style
Ian Levine's work really should have seen a commercial release.
Super interesting topic, there are so many fan animations out there that I had no idea about! I wonder if there are many other Big Finish animations, or even telesnap-style videos lying around on RUclips to be discovered?

11:38 classic Gilchrist

It's true. This was from 2008 so it was relatively cutting edge at the time.
This is a terrific smorgasbord of animation styles, and a tribute to the many fans who SO want animated releases to complete a full run of the original series. I'm all for the overly stylized version of Celestial Toymaker!
So much talent.

You should do DW fan animations as a whole!
It's such a wonderful gold pot!
Oh I am definitely checking out that Animal Crossing one! 😁
I'm an animator in my spare time... No way I could at my current level animate something of that magnitude by myself, so to see people going for it is pretty impressive stuff!

Toymaker - excellent - worth complecting - very, very good -
I would love any quality to come out just to see lost doctor who moving again is fantastic much better that photos
Janjy's work looks very 'New Captain Scarlet' in terms of design. They may wish to consider adapting the Big Finish audios for Captain Scarlet.
something I'm surprised about, is there isn't more of people finding lookalikes and acting out in real time and lip-synking to the original audio.
What a wholesome video 🌞

The pre dark eyes 8th doctor stuff is the best though
The characters in CongaLineMonkey's animations look like the real actors. Something that can't be said for most of the official animations.
Thank you!
I never thought I'd see Animal Crossing machinima of Marco Polo but I'm so glad it exists
We wacth and enjoy sideshows, all those aminations are great.
Everyone gangsta until Dot-Eyed Chesterton shows up.
I remember talking telesnaps but copyright came in and got rid of all the good ones.
Beautiful video wants again
Well done everyone
With all the mod tools available for Skyrim, I'm surprised no one has ever done a missing episode in the Skyrim game engine. I know there is already a TARDIS mod.
My favorites are Rob Ritchie and Dinopuff. They're both animated so well.
As with most media. Fans are doing the best
I wonder if someone made such a brilliant animation for missing episodes, so like The Crusades, if someone animated the missing episodes, could they sell them to the BBC for a release?
Hey Josh I have an idea, why don’t you get everyone apart of the Josh snares community to reanimate the Daleks master plan like shrek retold
I've been featured in a Josh Snares video? Why was I not informed of this honor???
💕💕💕
Some really nice projects there, I think the Deepfake has a lot of potential for some more complex stories that otherwise would be difficult to animate due to cost such as The Highlanders
C'Rizz is pronounced "Keh-rizz".
I highly recommend the early Eighth Doctor stuff!!
Neilsmith_animation's animation of The Sixth Doctor's Regeneration from The Last Adventure is really good
I imagine with advances in technology we should all see some incredible animations in the near future as it becomes easier and easier to animate stories. While it might be a long way away it would be incredible if you could use AI to generate animation in the same way we can use AI to generate art.
with current tech I would assume it would not be that hard to make a realistic CGI recreation and edit it to look old and black and white.
Me and my class are going to reconstruction live action video of an doctor who episode I will comment back as an update
Just a heads up - I don't know if anyone has already posted this - But C'rizz I'd actually pronounced "Keh-Rizz"
Hoping AI will soon dramatically reduce the costs of creating these - training sets of all available Hartnell/Troughton stories being used to recreate missing episodes?
Someone did the moonbase animation before it was properly animated
The Real C'rizz!? I too stan C'rizz (Care ress).
I long while ago, I began a project animating The Underwater Menace in Minecraft, would you be interested if I started that back up again?
I would happily buy each and every one of these
Brilliant Video Josh!
I kind of want to see all of them just done! Officially or not. Surely after 50 years audio and copyright should be abolished. But I hope this video encourages these guys to finish off these projects. Dino Puffs Toymaker is something I am keeping an eye on.
I would love to view Marco Polo animated - outside of the 1960s tapes being found - There is talent out there - so, who can say it will not happen
I would love to see an anime style of one of the episodes
