A correction is needed, along with some information left out from this review.
First, I've forgotten what company you claim animated this story, however, the ACTUAL name of the animator for "Scream of the Shalka" and the two missing episodes of 2nd Doctor story "The Invasion" was Cosgrove Hall...NOT whatever company you credited and considering the similarity of style I would suspect you miscredited it here as well.
And that leads to this next bit...there's a REASON that you don't see this level of quality in any of the other missing episode animations. Cosgrove Hall does excellent animation work, that is DEFINITELY true and if you watch the animated recons of Episodes 1 and 4 of "The Invasion" you'll see that play out as well. However...they're also a highly expensive studio to use which also explains why their contributions have been so limited. The BBC just simply could not afford their services for anything beyond either short-segment productions like "Scream of the Shalka" and "Infinite Quest" or animated recons with two or fewer episodes like "The Invasion". Any projects beyond that scale were simply unfeasible, which is why they had to search around for cheaper animation studios which could turn out these larger projects albeit with a drop in quality.
It's really a double-edged sword where you kinda have to weigh the pros and cons and decide what you would rather have. With the cheaper studios, the BBC is now able to turn out animated recons of entirely missing serials like "Power of the Daleks" which thus makes these stories accessible by fans like myself who love old Who but don't like the lack of visual context that exists in telesnap recons, however, this also means a noticeable drop in animation quality which leads to stiffer movements from characters and sometimes even a lack of depth within each frame making it not as visually pleasant to watch. However, if the BBC had stuck with Cosgrove Hall, we would have much better quality animated recons at the cost of significantly FEWER missing episodes able to be animated...and completely missing serials like the aforementioned "Power of the Daleks" would've likely NEVER received this treatment.
It all comes down to cost in the end and, IMHO, I'll take the loss of quality in favor of being able to see MORE missing episodes animated any day of the week...the chance to watch what I call "New-Old Who" is indeed quite the treat, even IF the animation that brought me that treat is a bit dodgy...

I am glad animation in Doctor Who is still experimenting to this day.
Not only recreating the lost episodes but also telling new stories that never make it to a live action episode, from the Infinite Quest and Dreamland to The Adventure Games, The Edge of Time and the recent Dalek stories for the Time Lord Victorious series.
It makes me wonder if we could get Series 0 in animation at the very least if it never gets passed by the BBC, or a visual interpretation of some Big Finish stories...

@@faealbahrani8821 Other than The Infinite Quest, there's Dreamland (a 10th Doctor story in low budget 3D CGI animation), the reanimated Classic Who stories from lost episodes in the BBC archives, the Richard E Grant's 9th Doctor story, "Scream of the Shalka", the recent CGI Dalek stories on RUclips for the Time Lord Victorious series, and possibly more. I'm sure there's a list on the internet with all of the mentioned above and any I've missed.
You'll find any of these will be on DVD/Blu-Ray/Steelbook collections, or an online streaming website.

Personally I remember watching this as it aired and it was one of my favourite stories at the time. Even looking back now I try to keep in mind it was wholly written for younger viewers and imo it succeeded completely. The designs translated what was needed well without having to push onto children the horrors of war, capitalism etc. I also really enjoyed the prison segment but i've always been a fan of the 'patients have taken over the asylum' trope so that probably helped.

I loved watching Totally Doctor Who as a child and would instantly buy a DVD or blu ray release. It's odd that it often gets forgotten when people talk of Who spin-offs, due to Torchwood being claimed as the first to get a series, but this came before Torchwood. Although you could then mention Doctor Who Confidential beating TDW (TDW was more a spin-off of DWC than of Who itself).

I forgot about 'Totally Doctor Who'!
In my head I think I combined The Doctor eroding a pirate ship with a spoon and them giving Martha a special toothbrush in 'The Shakespeare Code' because I could have sworn that in this The Doctor destroys the ship with a toothbrush he gave Martha. I guess I assumed the ship was made out of evil plaque or something rather than fungi?

I remember this when it first aired, and even remember watching it in its complied form. Has stuck with me since- a lot of the character designs are really great and the story isn't too bad.
I vaguely recall another similar animation at some point? Something to do with Area 51 or something like that.

I honestly didn't know this was an Obscure movie, since it came as a Bonus Feature when my Family bought the DVD of Shada, my Mom insisted of watching this first since she's the biggest fan of David Tennant out of our Family.

I remember this. Wasn't there also another one they did with semi-3D animation about Roswell/Area 51?

Will you be doing Dreamland next? I would argue it's more obscure given it was a red button exclusive initially.
Thankfully, both animations are available on DVD.

Hmm.. a live action episode with Balthazar as the villain, with flashbacks to this using live-action recreations (bringing back Tennant and Head at least?)

I remember there was also a set of them set in the desert in the US in the 50s, I think it was based around Roswell Incident .

I seem to remember this too, where they were in some sort of diner right? Strangely I can't find anything about it but remember seeing it, especially because they later did that same setting in Series 6.

@@starhound9354 I looked it up and it seems that is what I'm thinking of. My brain remembered the animation being more like this one rather than CGI but perhaps I'm just mixing up my memories of these two animated episodes.

I think you mean animated by Cosgrove Hall... not Firestep.

    • @JoesAnimationHub
      @JoesAnimationHub 3 года назад

yeah, that's right it WAS Cosgrove Hall who were in charge of Animation... as this came out around the same time as the reanimated episodes of "The Invasion" did. It had the same style of Flash animation and I think it used the same animation crew and character designers, they just translated it from Patrick Troughton to David Tennant and had all the assets in colour as opposed to Black and White.

  • @cameronmonaghan6883

I say more like The Keys of Marinus than The Key to Time.
I actually preferred Volag Noc to the latter two because the prison ties all the other plot points together. The other two where more side plots. I think Mergrass was actually a guard not a prisoner. I like the fact it breaks the mold.
I do wish the story was longer as well. And I would like to see Balthesar, Volag Noc and Squark again. It would be interesting to see a reoccuring criminal villain who doesn't have galactic conquest or a alien army. Just a loner who wants money and the thrill of adventure.
