Tremendous round of applause to Rob, incredible contribution to Who. To hear of the time lost with his kid really shows the demands of these projects, I couldn’t imagine those commitments as a new dad. I’d love to see him get to do more but really doesn’t sound all that sustainable to produce more.
I have to totally agree on the health warnings for working on these type of projects. Working on The Black Guardian Trilogy box set almost killed me. That was a level of depression I never want to feel again. I can not even begin to fathom what working on the fully animated stories would be like.
Probably the biggest unsung hero of the animations he worked on, and his love of the series is a major reason why. Now that The Underwater Menace has come out, it's even clearer how much his contributions elevated these releases. The strange choices with the TARDIS interior (hat rack and the doors), the lack of dynamic lighting, the obvious mistakes where the wrong character is animated speaking, the weird texturing and designs of sets, and that never-ending walk-cycle in the Ep. 2 cliffhanger; all things that, in theory, would have been different with Rob in the compositing chair. And to know that the team had started working on it months before this interview (May 2022) and that he never did receive a call-back really sours that part of the interview in retrospect. But I think it's still seems to be the better outcome for Rob personally. Hopefully he'll have the opportunity to fix the small errors in the ones he worked on when the respective Collection sets are being put together, and that some day he'll be back to animate the Daleks ones more time for their last missing story.
One was enough for me. I didn't even do that much compared to the others working on Power of the Daleks, but even 8 years on, I just remember the lack of sleep and the constant struggle to get things done - and I had the leeway of knowing that the backgrounds could be dropped in as the last element. I was illustrating traditionally at the time so things were taking a lot longer than they do now. Even so, if a project like The Daleks Masterplan was on the cards you'd want a far more realistic timeframe, so that the project could be completed with ease and then allow some time for a gap and a final polish before signing off on it. You don't want to throw your fan enthusiasm into something only to be criticised for failing to meet a ridiculous deadline, much less be criticised by fans spending their money. However, the apparent quality of the recent Celestial Toymaker animation - which looks like a massive retrograde step - doesn't suggest there's any passion for quality control going on right now.
VFX artists are really badly treated, yet its their passion and workmanship that is vital in producing some of the best visual content we have ever seen in recent years, I really feel Rob's a labour of love in his work. So if UK trash newspaper The Mirror is to be believed, then The Smugglers and The Underwater Menace are to be animated in time for the 60th Anniversary later this year, along with a colourised version of An Unearthly Child...!
Josh the standard of your work is so high. Thanks so much to Rob as well for contributing to this vid. As others have said it’s very clear the workload is extremely intense and discussing it in this way does help people appreciate the fact. Your channel keeps getting better and better 💓
Another “Collection” level production Josh! Many thanks to Rob for all his hard work, and to be honest as a fresh viewer to these stories I didn’t notice the missing flute dance from “Power SE,” the missing Rough and Tumbe machine from “Macra,” or notice the lip error in “Faceless Ones.” If the current Whomours are true and we are getting “The Smugglers” and “The Underwater Menace” I hope that the BBC is kinder about deadlines for these and any future productions.
What a lovely conversation between two thorough nice, talented and passionate people. So much work goes into doing anything creative, and we are so quick to criticise. Bravo! I love watching the animated shows Rob has been instrumental in bringing to life. It has got me to watch and enjoy all of the Patrick Troughton episodes, which I had previously not found a way to get into. Thank you.
@@DiM2404 I can totally relate to that. Went through that with My final Uni project, I've screened it it a few times before completion and there's always something that has been missed and I just react "Oh No!!" Just like how Rob described it.
Thanks to this interview I don't regret I never worked on Dr Who animations anymore. I'm making animations (for kids mostly sometimes business) and I know this pain when you have a deadline breathing on your neck and all those bigger and smaller mistakes, glitches and errors that slip through because publisher never takes enough time to check. I might say that I never finish my animation - I just stop working on them and they are being published. And then I watch them on RUclips or TV and "Oh god... how could I missed this!?!". I remember situations when I was hired to do thing A for X amount of money and ended up making A, B and C, still for X of money. In a week or two, waiting days for a contradictory feedback from different people who are not directly involved in project but they believe in micromanagement. And of course punching down "why are you late!?!?". Sometime in one project for major client I've been a cameraman, did VFX, compositing, roto... all because they spent all the budget on other things and suddenly "Oh! we still have video to shoot!". In 9 out of 10 I was a the end of the food chain. I said many bad words that closed many doors in this business but no regrets. I'm tired of crunch work and my heath and sanity are now more important.

Great interviewing and very enlightening about what the behind-the-scenes process is like. Definitely sounds like it took its toll on Rob which is a shame but understandable. Here’s to Rob maybe doing another project one day that doesn’t involve as much stress
Hi, I just want to say Thank You Rob Ritchie for going to so much trouble with working on the Doctor Who animations. It's absolutely fantastic what has been put together in the time frame given. I've just recently finished a animation project with my group within six months and we completely understand the amount of work that goes into this and how much of our time was needed to get it done. I can totally relate to working those hours up till 2am in the morning. So absolutely fantastic work Rob. Also Thanks Josh for putting together this interview video as well. It's always great to watch your videos and to hear that you're back uploading content more regularly is exciting. I'm a Australian animator/artist and a massive Doctor Who myself, having just finished my last year of study of my degree. And I'm looking to build networking connections and asking around to help out with different projects. That said, animating missing Doctor Who stories has been a bit of a dream of mine for the longest time. It was one of the reasons why I took up animation in the first place. So that advice that Rob gave at the end of the video is really helpfully. Also Josh, if you were looking for any help with your videos, I have a lot of experience in video editing and other skills in film production as well as animation. I'm very enthusiastic and ready to get involved in any project this year, continue to build on my skills and build connections with people. So let me know what you think. :) Either way, wish you all the best with your channel this year as well as yourself. :)

Excellent
I checked out Mission Dalek, not bad.
Could big finish possibly fund further animation and then have own separate release and then contribute those to the season sets for a nominal fee?
Are you ever gonna do more animations yourself, like you did with The Daleks' Master Plan and Marco Polo pt. 1?
Nah
@@JoshSnares Shame. Know anyone else who's doing similar stuff?
Wait.... the mind game saga? Real Time?!?! What's the BBC and Big finish doing 👀
Rob was talking about Reeltime productions who made spin off videos in the 90a Mindgame was a series they made with Sontarans and Draconians
