That came off way self deprecating.
Dear Harbo, I politely disagree. I see this any other different takes: a sign of healthy artistic and creative engagement. This is the same as "Scream of shalka" in flawed and one off.
Another example? The many Beatles films. Each different but all fresh in their take. Hell, even the albums. When Doctor Who isn't getting spin off projects that's when WE SHOULD BE WORRIED?
Whatever our critique, I think we're blessed because all of us share a passion and I'm happy that you all have become part of my life. Peace.
Thanks for putting me in one of your videos I watch you all the time and love your videos so this came as a bit of a shock for me
i was expecting the Worst but ended up LOVING the Story and Dialog, but I am a Big Alien and Area51 aficionado so maybe im biased, i feel like it was made for me.....but the i forgot you hate conspiracy theories because of its association with the Far right, i was into the subject before trump.
Did U ever think that it was Delibratly cliched as aLove letter to The UFO Area51 Lore
Damm, I remembered this being alot better than it actually was, nostalgia is one hell of a drug 😂
Yeah, it seems consistent with everyone
Good to know I’m not the only one. 😆
Same
Thank god I’m not the only one
I think I was getting it mixed up with the other animated special, I remembered it being in the same art style at least. The fact they used a similar setting during Matt Smith's era also doesn't help.
Ten's so weirdly pissy this story, but I love this thing.
Not as good as Infinity Quest, but I've always had a soft spot for these animations. Wish they did more.
The animation style wouldn’t be that bad if they added a bit more detail and didn’t constantly move on an axis it wouldn’t be too bad.
My favourite thing about Dreamland is the 2 Sarah Jane Adventures episodes that serve as pseudo sequels to it.
The Vault of Secrets? I quite liked it honestly. Androvax was still...him though.
What are the 2 episodes
@@bobsnape4493 The Vault of Secrets if memory serves me right. Remember SJA is two part serials remember.
@@bobsnape4493 The Vault of Secrets, which has the Men in Black and Fugitive of the Judoon. Which has the Roswell ship.
Both Androvax stories really.
Fun fact: all three stories are written by the same guy: Phil Ford
I like the way SJA took concepts from this story and made them better -- the same design for the Roswell ship when Androvax tried to recreate it in Prisoner of the Judoon, and the return and fleshing out of the Men in Black (Mr Dread at any rate) in The Vault of Secrets (incidentally Androvax's other appearance).
And those were written by Phil Ford as well
4:10 and 11:56, that map of the USSR is actually historically inaccurate, as it doesn’t include the other satellite states like Eastern Germany, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and Albania (not Yugoslavia as that would have been free before 1958). In fact it doesn’t even include things like Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania which at that point where actual states in the USSR.
This was so confusing and I remember that CBBC aired it so many times like they beat us over the head with it. Like I just feel Doctor Who is one of those shows it doesn't work in animated form. Like you need live action so you can experience the full affect. This was ambitious but it fell flat. I should never have happened.
I think you can do a doctor who episode in animation but it has to be decent animation and in this story the movements seemed very robotic.
@@kilobravo3533 Yep doctor who can work in animation the missing eps of classic who brought back as animation proves it, the only issue is the BBC is always cheap when it come to budget and you end up with stuff like dreamland.
the thing is the ship, the gadget thingy from the ship and the robot Men in Black and even the Roswell abductions and stuff were all put into 2 Sarah Jane Adventures stories and they were handled much better. Proof that when things are written well they work
I wonder what part of the RTD interior they thought didn't work well in HD. I always thought it looked nice in the brief shots of it we saw in the specials.
I assume it's stuff like seams on the coral arches (where they were glued together) and stuff like that?
As for the doors to other rooms, I like to think one of the wall panels slides up or something to reveal a corridor. Explains why the console room looks like one isolated room at least.
Yeah we see lights being changed in Boom Town and grilled floors being pulled up in Army of Ghosts and Unicorn and the Wasp. Gives the feeling that everything can be pulled away to reveal more.
They do a lot with a little and leave the rest go your imagination. Classic Who style.
When they pan up past the lights you can see the white dome of the ceiling looks incredibly flimsy. I think it might actually be made of fabric. The coral arches themselves also have a cheap, plastic-y look in HD. They had more depth and texture in standard definition, but it doesn't carry across.
There's also just a door down the back isn't there? Down a small flight of stairs, behind the chair?
Well, I say door. Gap in the wall would be more appropriate. I don't think it's featured much in the show though.
@@TheSmart-CasualGamer I can't quite remember a door. As you probably know, the set only ever had about 2/3 of the walls, and they just rotated them based on the shot. I think the set was only ever really just 1 room.
They do mention corridors and extra rooms, as early as S1E3, but they don't show anything, you're supposed to go 'oh, they're in a corner of the console room we can't see'.
@@LiveHedgehog They do show another room (but without a path towards it) in The Christmas Invasion, though.
It looks like an extremely cheap knock off of a Telltale adventure game.
I think it was actually made by Telltale.
Telltale make better story than this garbrage
@@lemon8890 I behold...the pre Walking Dead telltale games. Also they made not make. They've been shut down a few years.
I could easily believe this was from a cancelled doctor who telltale game...
@@lemon8890 You haven't played Wallace & Gromit have you?
The Alliance of Shades do return for one more appearance in the Sarah Jane Adventures episode The Vault of Secrets but as far as I’m aware, that’s it.
The Ship also appears in the Judoon episode. Both Androvax episodes heavily reference Dreamland.
I just realised Alliance of Shades is a play on their sunglasses. Fuck me 🙄
I remember how hyped I was as a kid when I saw Mr Dread in the “next time” trailer for that episode
I remember watching this as a kid, loving it, then coming back like 2 years later and cringing as hard as possible...
The men in black robots are actually in The Sarah Jane Adventures so they are explored
Was coming to comment this myself
@@GreenBoxStudio1 same
The maroon ship also featured in the Sarah-Jane Adventures too.
If I could get my grubby little paws on Who, I'd make it a surreal cosmic conspiracy thriller. So I appreciate the setting, I'm vibing with it.
Like the x files??? Now that I want to see!
@@wishfulthinkin3478 - yess. JFK and Faction Paradox. Dogmas for the Daleks and cults for Cybermen.
A companion growing as suspicious of the Doctor as the Doctor is to him. But they still love each other, they just feed their own paranoias. It's a schizophrenic, twitchy Doc; making sceptical, conspiratorial Tyler a match made in hell.
*This is definitely what could be classed as “gloriously abysmal”, but the fact that Mr Dread FROM THE SJA STORY “THE VAULT OF SECRETS” IS IN IT!*
I love this story, pure and silly fun, Lisa Bowerman does a fair job as the good alien. I love how the ship and MIB return in the Sarah Jane Adventures.
Roswell was something that should've been explored on the main show, not in a random litte animated series.
Honestly it's too cliche for Doctor Who in general
This looks like a Tell Tale game that I definitely would've played.
It’s stupid because of how bad this thing is, but Ten’s insistence on not being called “Doc” has actually carried over to frustration for me at Graham for seemingly refusing to call 13 anything other than that. However, what I will say is I really want to see Big Finish audios animated, maybe as part of a deal with Warner on HBOmax if necessary, as a way of popularizing them, satisfying fans in between long hiatuses, revisiting Doctors outside of anniversaries, and offering alternative visions to whatever the current era is to calm the inevitable idiotic behavior towards it
Maybe it was that personal Doctor's preference. In 11's first season in the Weeping Angel's 2 parter you hear Amy say "You're letting people call you sir, you never let people call you sir" meaning that 11 must have chilled out somewhat to allow himself to be chill with people calling him sir and then when we got to 13 She had almost fully mellowed and that's why Graham called her "Doc". 10 always felt like he was a bit stuck up and up tight and deffo had an inflated ego which is why he never let people call him "Doc" or "Sir" and always insisted on "Doctor"
@@lucypreece7581 that’s a fair point.
The First Doctor also hate called "Doc".
I thought I was the only one who kept thinking about 10s distaste for being called "Doc" whenever Graham always did 😂
@@thestigmister Because Jodie Whittaker is not the Doctor.
My reaction to the post: Oh, the animation doesn't look that bad.
My reaction to the first shot shown in the video: Oh, God; now I see your point
Thankfully Tennant had perfected his voice acting when he did his cameo in the clone wars.
And he did a great job voicing Scrooge McDuck :D
I find it so weird that Sarah Jane Adventures made this animation canon by both featuring the ship and one of the men in black robots...
I remember being so fond of this when it first came out and I was eight or nine years old! The title, the location, the aliens, they all set my imagination ablaze, I think I even preferred this to ‘The Infinite Quest’ 😱😱 I haven’t seen either in most likely a decade so I’d have to rewatch them to see how I feel about them now! 😅
One of the first 10th Doctor Episodes I ever saw, oh boy I'm glad I forgot it.
The best part about Dreamland for me is the fact that they re-used the designs for certain things in the SJA (Most obvious is the ship being re-used in Androvax's first story, and the Men in Black, also used in an Androvax story)
Ngl, I chalked this up as just a fever dream. I legit forgot about it. Makes me wanna re-watch it, I don't know why....
So way back when dreamland first aired I managed to get each episode uploaded on RUclips. I've always wondered why this and the 2d animated story was never fully removed and my account deleted. It was that bad I guess. No complaints here I joined over a decade ago!
Ah darn, maybe because they're not publicly visible? I cant see them, got excited briefly
Ah sorry bud, it probably looks like they're all there for me as the uploader
This was created for CBBC. RTD told Phil Ford and other SJA writers to not be afraid to reuse sci-fi tropes in SJA as it would be the first time that children would see them. And I remember as a child (the target audience) really enjoying it as extra Doctor Who doing Doctor Who stuff. I don’t think the animation is bad at all (at least not so bad that children would care) and the story itself is fine. I’m not going to rewatch it as an adult and pick holes in it.
I wouldn't mind the animation, if the story or voice acting wasn't so bad.
So here's my ranking of all animations (worst to best)
Macra Terror
Faceless Ones
Shada
Tenth Planet/ Reign of Terror
Power of the Daleks
The Ice Warriors
Web of Fear
The Invasion/ Infinite Quest tied with Mission to the Unknown
Fury from the Deep
Dreamland
This ones ur favourite? Rlly lol? Fe who am I to judge :-)
I personally love the fury animation
@@JamifyYT well each their own
Mike Stoklasa in an HB video the same day RLM uploads an almost two hour Best of the Worst? Its a great time to be alive.
I remember learning how to access this on the website during 10's era by going through different pages.
I know now that I could've just copied the URL but it was still a cool feeling
You should do the Sarah Jane adventures review on your channel and soon you will review the end of time?
this is so nostalgic for me, i remember this being on cbbc iplayer when i was young
I watched this in crappy quality on a RUclips video. I spent most of the movie wondering if it was fan made.
That spaceship at 18:24 is the same design Androvax had constructed in Prisoner of the Judoon in the third series of the Sarah Jane Adventures.
I remember watching this as a child and still found it boring
I remember watching this as a kid and enjoying it, but I forgot everything about it and only gradually remembered bits as this video went on lmao
"What killed all these daleks?"
"WHO'S GOT TWO THUMBS, AND KEEPS COMMITTING GENOCIDE?"
Was expecting 'You look up 'genocide' in the dictionairy, you see a picture of me!' when you talked about the Doctor's idea of genocide.
That woman looks like Amy from amys baking company
Harbo: We never learn anything more about the Men in Black and the Alliance of Shades
SJA: *Am I a joke to you?*
i thought this was a weird nightmare i had when i was watching season 4.... turns out it was real
“Before you tell me in the comments, I’m one step ahead of you”
B-but David Warner was also in Cold War in series 7
i knew i wasn’t crazy, thanks for putting my comment in the video!
I watched this years ago and loved it, yes the animation is weird but if you get past this I think you’ll enjoy the story.
*Me to Web of Fear animation:* “Perhaps I treated you to harshly.”
This is one of the most "Video Game from 2008 made for the Xbox 360"
AND HOW DOES THE WEB OF FEAR REMAKE LOOK WORSE THAN THIS?
ruclips.net/video/tfjXpTr5dos/видео.html - A Xbox 360 videogame from 2006. Still looks miles better than this piece of inanimation.
You know what. I would kill to see these animated adventures Doctor Who has produced, adapted and taken on by fans like 3DDoctorWho and the prydonian along side theTardisman to make the episodes in full 3D renders with some David Tennent deep fake to match up with the dialogue. Basically g all the realistic Doctor Who 3D artists you can find and adapt them in modern day with realistic 3D animation
This video awakened memories I didn't even know I had
The scarab bug men look kinda cool... as long as they're not moving... or doing anything... also are those exits sign just so the aliens know where the emergency meeting point is lol.
So random fact~ simply because I have googled too much doctor who nonsense the alliance of shades got one more appearance in the Sarah-Jane adventures.
Can't remember the episode... it was the sequel atory with the body-swapping alien Silurian-looking thing?
Oh Phil Ford… funny how his work on another 3D animation from earlier in his career (New Captain Scarlet) is far better than this…
When I saw the animation style in the thumbnail my first thought was "Was there a Doctor Who Telltale game I missed??"
What if this was live-action. A live-action of this or Planet of the Dead?
Yes, that would've been brilliant!
You ever think you'l do a video on Scream Of The Shalka, tie these animated episodes retrospectives into a trilogy? It's a story i have a lot of fondness for and be interested to see what you think of it
Weren’t those men in black and that bronze space ship in the Sarah Jane Adventures?
Yes, yes they were, The Vault of Secrets and Prisoner of the Judoon
Looks like Gerry Anderson puppets would have had been a better option to this style of animation, yeesh
The Teaser made me think, "Is that Doctor Who Borderlands?"
I'd never even heard of this one before now. Praise the Company! (reference to an episode of classic WHO from 1977, for the younger fans)
The alliance of shades is explored in the Sarah Jane adventures and the spaceship appears in it
I'm glad I have something to point to whenever people say RWBY volume 1 has bad animation, god did it always look this bad?
Seriously kid me what the hell?
Christ I got this from a library when I was a kid. I remembered it being a lot better.
Although this special aged poorly, I'll always have a soft spot for Dreamland. I remember watching it the first time it aired as a kid and really enjoying it. Nostalgia blindness? Absolutely. But it takes me back to when I was actually excited for new Doctor Who episodes instead of the really "eh" stories we've had since Chibnall took over.
Wow had honestly completely forgot this was even a thing that existed
Who needs the level of animation quality as the new Star Trek animated series. With that level of quality animation, they could actually have a stand-alone animated Who series that revisits some of the original Doctors with new stories.
When I first discovered that The Infinite Quest and Dreamland existed, I watched them both once... and never looked back.
No matter how much people tell us not to watch something, Dreamland, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (according to Trilbee Reviews) or other bad superhero movies, or Sonic fans saying not to play the worst games in the Sonic franchise etc., we will inevitably watch it just to fully appreciate what makes the better parts of a franchise good as well as understand how not to do certain projects so that they aren't making the same mistakes as the ones I have mentioned. You may have taken a bullet Harbo with this review, but at least it will be less painful if others go through the same experience so your sacrifice isn't fully in vain.
This is the first time I’m ever seeing this so when I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was some Doctor Who TellTale game that was lost in time.
10:20 Those robo-Men in Black actually appear in a episode of Sarah Jane Adventures.
2:15 this is the only thing I remember from this. Probably because I tuned out immediately after I saw it.
Funnily enough the alliance of shades as well as the ship design is all from the sja
You only made this video to make us wait even longer for your review of one of the greatest episodes and finale of the Davies era, possibly of the whole of Dr Who
Man, that fkn Frodo Baggins clip. I never see it coming and it always makes me choke 🤣
I would love for this animation to be redone, because I still think it’s good! May be nostalgia blinding me, but I still think it’s a cool story, it’s just snagged up by some dated animation from people who weren’t well… all too experienced
The most interesting thing about this story is that the UFO appears in an episode of SJA
I’ve never been into dr who but when I was younger I watched this but I never remembered what it was. All I remember him saying was “HI IM THE DOCTER!”
The scrapped animation from Clone Wars series 6 is easily better but I do like the action scenes.
The style reminds me of Borderlands, but the animation is like sfm videos
So what I got from this video is the best way to watch this is with a few drinks and some friends
The alliance of shades actually make a reappearance in the Sarah Jane adventures episode the vault of secrets.
Just scrolled down and saw lots of people have already commented this
I remember this barely! But had no idea it was a doctor who thing!
This looks like a very early tale tale video game
If I remember right the men in black returned in Sarah Jane adventures.
I wonder if RTD will use the opportunity he has now with his second era to do a better, live-action version of the story. That would be cool!
Well howwdy there, partnuuuurrrrsssss!!! Maybe I should check this series out (;
If this is an E...may God help whatever episode you give an F rank
I got dead excited hearing rumours of this special being a multi-doctor special with the doctor in a coma within a kind of dreamland
The only good thing is the Alliance of shades being used more in SJA
bad animation like this always makes me want to have a crack at animating it myself because I can't do much worse but do I have any animation experience? no. do I have the time? no.
Keep in mind, this is somehow on Netflix… like how
Can we please stop with the "Chibnall is unoriginal" cracks? His run has included sentient universes, living gateways from another dimension, diseases caused by cyber-piloting, warrior aliens too arrogant to even have their own technology, and an alien virus that uses microplastics as a substrate, amongst other ideas. Chibnall's era has been poorly written and executed, but unoriginal it is not.
I found these on bbc America’s website but the uk’s iPlayer kept blocking me from viewing it
I never even knew that it was originally split into parts, I only ever saw it in omnibus form. I suppose that explains some of the weird pacing.
The Clones Wars made animation look good?
They had STAR WARS money! And while season 7 looked amazing, it started off not much better than Dreamland
I've never understood why Doctor Who didn't branch off into animated universe.
Because whenever they do, it goes bad
@@mrdr0161 Not all the time and that's mainly cause the bbc don't understand animation and don't really care about it
I honestly loved Dreamland as a kid. Mainly because it was like Doctor Who as a cartoon, I guess that appealed to me.
Why not mention the Sarah Jane Adventures which used both the spaceship and the shades in its stories building upon Dreamland and cementing it in Doctor Who canon.
Ngl, I thought Dreamland was a TellTale game
Weren’t the alliance of shades In The Sarah Jane adventures episode with Androvax?
