It's kind of funny how K Rool mismatches his costumes: -He's a _king,_ on a pirates boat, presumably for a _captain._ -He's a _captain,_ on a flying techno aircraft, presumably for a mad _baron._ -He's a _baron,_ in a castle, presumably for a _king._
You actually missed a crucial detail in Returns. The second-to-last boss in the factory shows that banana juice is used to create and fuel more Tiki Taks. So they stole the bananas to fuel their army.
8:25 I can help explain this. Donkey Kong can’t be hypnotized cause… well he’s an idiot. I think they’ve even mentioned this before in some videos where people play the game that Donkey Kong isn’t smart enough to be hypnotized. As for the bananas, Not only could Tiki Tong use them to make hands, but in the intro cutscene for the 7th boss. It is revealed that the Bananas are being used to create more Tiki Taks. Likely to take over the entire island, then move past that and conquer more lands past the island… I am kind of curious though about how long that castle has been inside of that volcano.
I don't think DK wasn't able to be hypnotized because he was an idiot. Surely Cranky and Diddy weren't hypnotized either, yet they aren't idiots. I think it's moreso just that DK is too strong willed to be hypnotized. Or rather that the hypnotism didn't work because they were trying to get him to do something he'd never do. This would explain why Diddy and Rambi were locked up in barrels and crates. The Kongs and their allies would never allow the Banana Hoard to be stolen.
He even decidedly shown the cutscene of Kaptain K Rool sailing away, as he was saying the Cap...sorry...Kaptain was never seen again so presumably died.
I think the best part about the DKC stories is what is left up to interpretation. There are subtle hints here and there that you can choose to interpret at your own will. I believe that the sequels actually help explain the motivations of previous games even better. Here's my interpretation: *DKC1:* In the 2nd game, we see that Crocodile Isle is an extremely dangerous place. It's in disrepair. It's a massive health hazard. There's not an inch of land that isn't either precarious or used by the Kremlings. K Rool drove his empire into the ground, and needs more resources for his people. His solution? K Rool leads his minions to DK Island, which at one point was a home to the Kremling empire, as we can see by the Kremling ruins on the Isle. He makes alliances with some of the lesser groups of the islands... The Army Dillos, the Manky Kongs, and the Gnawties. He has his minions create Kremkroc industries to utilize the island's natural resources. However, he has 1 opposition-- the Kongs. In order to occupy the land, K Rool steals the banana hoard to attempt to starve the Kongs. He wants the entire island. He won't stop until that dinky little treehouse is the only thing remaining of the Kongs. *DKC3:* After the destruction of Crocodile Isle in DKC2, K Rool has to go into hiding. He plots to destroy the Kong family, and quickly dedicates himself to machinery, donning the alias of Baron K. Roolenstein. He hides out in the Northern Kremisphere, befriending a separate Kremling Klan to work for him. He captures DK and Diddy, and uses them to power KAOS, whom he hides behind. It's possible that during this time, he was creating the mechanical Crocodile Isle that we see in Donkey Kong 64... the new home for his Kremlings, and the weapon by which DK Island will be destroyed. After his defeat, he ditches the Kremisphere Kremlings and begins to rule from the mechanical Crocodile Isle. *DKCR:* In this game, the island looks vastly different than it did in the past. The DK head that once was the landmark of the island is gone. And the snowy mountaintops are also absent. This is never explained, but I'd imagine the Volcano literally exploded, busting off the mountaintops. And the earthquakes caused the stone DK head to crumble, revealing the cliffs that preserved prehistoric life in the side of the mountain. This eruption would be what allowed the Tiki Tak Tribe to awaken. And what led to the eruption in the intro of DKCR. In the Factory world, we see that the Tiki Tak tribe was using the banana hoard to create new Tiki Goons for their army. Tiki Tong using bananas to make himself hands likely wasn't his end goal, and was just what he was going to use to destroy DK. But we can glean from this that the bananas are magical. We also see how bananas are worshipped in the Kong temples throughout the land. And we can wonder if these are remnants of a bustling Kong civilization. Nowadays, there are very few Kongs. But in the past, there may have been many. The presence of Screaming Pillars in Tropical Freeze's Bright Savanna, and the savanna animal silhouettes featured in Tiki Tong's boss chamber, may imply that the Tiki Tak Tribe originated there, traveled to DK Island, and were sealed in the Volcano by the ancient kongs. That's all the main stuff. Tropical Freeze is pretty light on lore. The Snowmads don't have much to them other than taking over islands. I guess one other thing is that DK Land features "Big Ape City," which is supposed to be the city that the original DK arcade game took place. AKA, what Super Mario Odyssey would call New Donk City. It seems that Big Ape City is what the Kong family refers to the city as.
6:11 I think this is actually a reference to a 1995 Electronic Games article where it was rumoured to have a quote from Miyamoto: "Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good"
Surprised you didn't go through DK64's story when you included the DKLand games. Maybe cover that alongside some other DK adventures, like Jungle Beat, King of Swing, Jungle Climber... and I suppose Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle's Donkey Kong Adventure DLC.
I had heard that Dk64 was considered part of the Country line, but I always thought otherwise due to the fact they play soo differently, and the fact Dk64 was Literally the only name the game had.
Correction for Returns: The 4th boss (Mole Miner Max) leads the moles on the Minecart levels and is likely behind the quicker transportation of the bananas between worlds via minecarts and the train (same can be inferred for the crab pirates and their ships, idk); the 7th Boss (Colonel Pluck)'s machine presses the bananas to make fuel for the minions (basically he's factory-producing them); the final boss doing it to make his hands out of the main bosses was just a last-ditch effort to stop the Kongs from overthrowing him.
I think the stories are REALLY fun in the DK titles, I just kinda wish there was some sorta... tie in to the wider mario world in them, a little? Wario also has this problem with his titles, and I ADORE how they help make the world wider and weirder, I just wish there was more connective tissue
I believe they have different creators/developers within Nintendo but I would totally play a Mario game with dk and wario on, im tired of bowser and the koopas being the only enemies in every game
oh my god... in all these years i never noticed it wasnt called diddy kong's quest but diddy's kong-quest, diddy's conquest, yes there is even a - in the title
9:21 as beeheeyem once said (taking through meowth) Beeheeyem: “I’m afraid idiots are hard to hypnotize” So it’s the one time it pays to be a *Stupid* Monke 🦍
The Tikis need the bananas to create more tikis, this is seen during the intro of the 7th boss, where bananas are stomped into mush and then used to magically animate wooden sculptures into more enemies.
Since it only got like 2 sentences DK Jungle Climber deserves its own video. The bosses are so random and the game feels like a donkey kong getting over it
The plot are the baseline for functional plots in 90s platformers. I never needed that much plot for Donkey Kong titles anyway. I do prefer the DKL3 plot to DKC3's one, however.
Donkey Kong is connected to Banjo Kazooie which is referenced in sea of thieves. Tricky the triceratops appears in diddy kong racing who also appears in star fox adventures. Perfect Dark's characters are referenced in banjo tooie, which has a map from golden eye. There is also a Jetforce Gemini poster in Banjo Tooie. Also in Banjo Tooie, Sabreman appears, confirming Sabrewulf and killer instinct in the rare universe. I forgot conker is here too. Never call this series stories bizarre again. Rare worked so hard to connect their IPs in fun ways. (this was a joke, this universe is crazy, but i did do the research to back the connections up)
@2:23 taking their bananas technically wouldn't have starved them to death. They have other fruit and food sources on their island such as watermelons, giant berries, fish, craw fish etc. I get he's supposed to be obsessed with bananas but he still has other sources of food
In the next game the winter tribe should join forces with some new enemy like Kommandant K. Roolanchute to desing some new handheld weapon that all foot soldiers could carry and have the intrepid and classic duo of Kandy and Swanky venture to stop such militaristic development
the reason why the brainwashing didnt work on DK is most likely hes too stupid to get hypnotised, like he doesnt even use his brain just monke see monke do.
Ngl seeing the first 3 game Imagine a world were every dk country game that came out afterwards would feature the previous kongs getting kidnapped and introducing 1 or 2 brand new memebers of the family I really think this would have happend if microsoft hadnt bought and lobotomised rareware
It's too bad that Nintendo doesn't have the rights to bring back the Kremlings. I'd love the next DK game to be based around overcoming a K Rool revenge plot.
That's not the case! Nintendo owns all the rights to the Donkey Kong Country IP, and that includes the Kremlings. They've appeared in many games following Microsoft's purchase of Rare, including the Donkey Konga series, the games developed by Paon, and even Mario Super Sluggers. The reason the Kremlings weren't included in Returns and Tropical Freeze is simply because Retro Studios wanted to try something new. But I am with you, I'd love to see King K. Rool and his reptilian minions return in a future Donkey Kong game.
I never owned any DKC game, and I’m old enough that I was a kid when they came out, just didn’t have a Super Nintendo. I did have Donkey Kong Land 2 though.
It's kind of funny how K Rool mismatches his costumes:

All the K Rool’s are the same character, just K Rool in different outfits

That was bothering me that he kept saying it
King, Kaptain, and Baron K Rool are just alter egos of each other.
