    Poor finishing by England, should have been 7 or 8. We failed to qualify for the '78 WC because we did not score enough goals against the minnows.

      The game that really did for us was the reverse fixture in Luxembourg, which we only won 2 - 0.

      @@Ruda-n4h Colin Todd and Dave Watson, yep that's a lethal combo (sadly Mcfarland had become a victim of injuries so could not link again for England as he had done with Todd at Derby)...the point about Beattie is that Phil Thompson got a lot of England caps post 1976 which Beattie's injuries possibly allowed him into the team..Beattie and Butcher at the centre of England's defence would post 1980 have have been some partnership..

    Lousy finishing from England in this one, five years later they would put 9 (nine) past the same opposition, again at Wembley.

    • @Ruda-n4h
      @Ruda-n4h 3 года назад

      England always struggled at home at this time to a useful continental side with an excellent libero and a good goalkeeper. Luxembourg were not a good side but they did work hard (and got players behind the ball). It was this deep defensive organisation coupled with not being afraid of physical contact and working hard that baffled England (and probably still does). At international level players must be able to play the difficult ball up to a player who is tightly marked and develop a move from there. The final penetrating pass into the penalty area has to go into feet and players must make diagonal runs off the ball to drag defenders away and open up the defence. English players at the time didn’t do that as 99% of attacks in the league ended with a high cross.

      Says who? Brazil, Argentina, Holland, Germany were the major teams. If England had qualified at Italy's expense the other teams were much better. After Gordon Banks had retired early in the 70's England had few recognized stars to go toe to toe with any of the worlds best. keegan and Brooking were the best they had to offer but not up to the standard of the other teams stars.
