  • Don Revie's reign as England manager gets off to the perfect start with a 3-0 win over Czechoslovakia in October 1974 in a European Championship qualifier. Who would have imagined after this result that the Czechs would go on to win the competition?! England failed to qualify.

    I think this was Don Revie's first match as manager with England as before him,Joe Mercer was the caretaker coach.
    It was an European Championship match with Czechoslovakia at Wembley in 1974 with England winning 3-0 with goals from Mick Channon and Colin Bell(2).But it was to be the recently deceased Norman Hunter's farewell game for England.

    England had some terrific players in this era - but Revie kept changing his sides around too much. They never had a settled side under him.

    From this match, it was then very hard to imagine that Czechoslovakia would finally win the Cup two years later.

    Kevin Keegan made a great point when Don Revie died ,"England were just not good enough" Unfortunately the presumption England were great ,they really weren't ,and only qualified for the WC in 1982 because of the extended tournament that meant you qualified finishing second.

    A very good win against an excellent Czechoslovak team. The fact that a strong England side failed to qualify for the final stages in 1976, whereas the current England side qualified for Euro 2016 by winning every game, owes everything to the changes in the system and nothing to the relevant strengths of the sides then and now.

    • @r4h4al

      Yep, under modern rules the top 2 go through so England would have qualified. We were also in a tough group with the eventual competiton winners.

      in the very early 1970s, England had a dip of quality but from around 1974 until the end of the decade England had some excellent teams and players..the failures not to qualify for the World Cup is very misleading. In 1978 England did not qualify on goal difference not points, both times losing out to semi finalists, Poland and Italy...

      Don Revie's England team really whipped Czechosolvakia in that Euro qualifying match at the old Wembley Stadium one evening in the autumn of 1974. It is somewhat ironic that, less than two years later, in the summer of '76, the Czechs became champions of Europe..... whereas England failed to qualify for the latter stages of the competition.

    • @merseydave1
      @merseydave1 9 лет назад +1

      We in England played to many domestic matches then and no time period of rest before internationals...plus the Czecks had less domestic games and few players of international quality, however they made a good/hardworking team that endevoured !

      @r4h4al 7 лет назад +3

      England really should have qualified with the players we had, Keegan, Bell, Channon, Clemence, Shilton, if we had just beaten Portugal at home we would have made it :(

    • @merseydave1
      @merseydave1 7 лет назад +4

      Something to realize ... Then (up to 1976) the finals were just the semi's and Final ... maybe a third place game ... as you had to win the qualifying group, then play a two legged Quarter Final (Wales lost to Yugoslavia) to get to the finals. At the point of qualifying the four nations came to a conclusion as to Who would Host the Final Stages ... Yugoslavia became the Hosts in 1976.

    • @r4h4al
      @r4h4al 7 лет назад +1
