- When Abiy Ahmed unexpectedly became Ethiopia’s prime minister in April 2018, he rapidly unleashed a wave of liberal political and economic reforms and shocked the world by making peace with longtime foe Eritrea. This earned him international adoration that culminated in the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.
Just a year later, however, Africa’s second largest state descended into a horrific civil war that left hundreds of thousands dead and tarnished Abiy’s reformist image. Though his regime nearly collapsed during the war, Abiy ultimately emerged victorious and now rules over a country that is at once internally unstable and regionally ambitious.
The Economist’s Africa correspondent, Tom Gardner, joins Hudson Research Fellow James Barnett to discuss Gardner’s new book, The Abiy Project: God, Power and War in the New Ethiopia, and Ethiopia’s future in the volatile and strategically vital Red Sea region.

Abiy Ahmed is very assertive regarding the sea via somaliland. Ethiopia's 120 million population needs atleast 12 ports and for years Djibouti has been extorting Ethiopia with ridiculous export and import prices. Ethiopia pays 1.5 billion annually which is ridiculous plus Ethiopia needs to protect it's goods for national security. Imagine a country blockades Ethiopian goods from going out and coming in, that will destroy Ethiopia's economy so a sea access is a must no more bullying by Eritrea and Djibouti
Interesting insight. For a son who followed Ethiopian politics since TPLF was a rebel fighter, I think you captured most of what is going on currently. What was the last thing that sparked the war in Tigray? You omitted that. I old like to know what you think was the final draw
Do you know any theology or what a Pentecostal movement is or what prosperity gospel is. The thin line Tom Gardner uses to connect all of this, when it is very clear he understand none of them. Grasping at its straws!

Northern Gondar and parts of ancient Angot (Raya) were annexed by TPLF and added to Tigray in 1995. Why are you denying this?

In fact, the stupid TPLF allowed Amhara expansionist narrative for all these years, which culminated in Tigray Genocide. Ethiopia was constituted into an ethnic state following the London conference on what the British call the Lancaster template. Melese and lencho took the cue from Britain. The the ethnic structure was imposed on EPRDF for two main reasons the Lancaster template: make sure that marxit ideology is weakened and the Ethiopian state remains in western camp.
Advice to the journalists and international observers: please stop calling it “Tigrayans” did this and that, please use “TPLF” . In the same way you use “Abiy” not “Ethiopians”, and “Putin” not “Russians” to what happened in Ukraine. Since “TPLF” has chock hold of the “Tigrayans” life at home & abroad. A small ask but a giant leap in objective analysis.

Ethiopia is a modern state that formed in the 19th century. axumite civilization has nothing to do with modern Ethiopia. Axumite civilization was those who are Tigrigna spoken people who are today in Eritrea and Tigray state. In the 19th century, the neftegna clan monopoly dominated and conquered Ethiopia by violence against many ethnic groups like against, Tigrayans, oromo, Sidama and many ethnic groups, but they all fall into the neftegma amahra empire hand and they assimilate them. It is very funny and sad at the same time how a lot of people claim to have knowledge and even go as far as writing a book without even getting 50% of the facts right. It is this kind of misleading journalism that I have brought not only Africa, but then Taiwan to the knees, for those that want to control it is very threatening to see the past, pays gross from Africa, without the hand of a white man.
