- Its always a good day when you get a 2 for 1 special on some BMW E34s! This time around it happened to be 2 535i 5 speeds. Both $900, so lets see just how bad a cheap E34 535i is in 2023. More importantly can it actually drive??
We bought 535 for $1000, 5 speed, lsd diff, leather interior on blue and it is bad asf, lsd dear, all shocks dead, brakes dead and fuel pump dead, but drives like a demon.
faster than f01 3.0d decat, faster than e36 2.0.

I have a E32 735i/5 that I purchased in very similar condition as this a few years ago. I bought it as a parts car for my E23 but decided to fix it up because it was actually in better condition than my E23. The manual E32 is pretty rare in the US, so I figured that I would give it a second lease on life. The paint is still garbage, but I gave it a total mechanical refresh (sans transmission and rear suspension), and now the M30B35 runs like a Swiss watch. I also completely restored the interior and overhauled automatic HVAC system (which was a nightmare).
Good for you man! Happy to hear an e32 got saved and is being enjoyed. Its not impossible to get a rough car back on the road, but it is hard and expensive to make it look nice too!
Jeez. The first time I read about the E34 was Road&Track in early 1988. I went to a UK dealer launch in June and I still have the invite 35 years later. I feel old!

Yup both these swaps sold at 1400+. Thats the value in parting these out when they get this bad.

It’s a shame M20s are undesirable, the M20 in my 528e has over 280,000 miles on it and it’s big chillin, sure the top end performance isn’t there but it’s super robust😎👍 Also, NICE find with this E34, I was thinking about getting into those at some point.
M20s are always good! Just not the right motor for an e34!
I bought my white E34 525i for $525 back in 02/2020. Needed some work but ran, drove and passed emissions. Oh and black interior 🥰

No windshield , and died after 40miles lol

And yes that manual driven probably worth more than the car

I wish I could find things like Josh does. Cheapest ones around me are 2k, auto and haggard. Even medium condition ones people are trying to get 4k for.

Funny thing is I've encountered 3 Laser Blue E34's here in AZ. I owned a 91 525i/5 in that color, have a customer 92 535ia in that color, and my friend picked up a 92 525i/5 in that color not too long ago. I do miss when manual E34's were sub-$1500 cars all day long, I could actually afford em back then.
So funny how to some people a certain color is common and others have never seen it before haha

the style 5s are interesting. black car passenger side is normal e34 stockies but looks like on drivers side is e30 m3 style 5s, the mesh is different and not flat like the e34/38 5s, but raised spokes like the e28/30 m 5s

Between a M30 & M50, which one is better in terms of reliability and mods? Is there more to gain from a M50 than a M30 or vice versa?
Both are neck and neck reliable stock. M50 is generally easier to understand and keep running properly. Both can be modded to extremely fun while reliable. A powerful m50 is always a bit more reliable than a powerful m30 though

Are the m30b35 motors the same between E28 and E34 models?
The E28 535i only came with the M30B34 from what I know. The last two years of the E24 635csi (88 and 89) came with the M30B35, as did all E32 735i/iL cars. Those are the same as what came in the E34 535i.

My 535/5 has been doing the same thing for the past three years now and I have not been able to track down the issue. Mine also intermittently gets code 1222 when driving and violently jolts just like at 13:07 when the motor starts warming up (only when I’m heavy on the gas pedal). Also has a hot start issue. I gotta unplug my coolant temp sensor to the DME every time I want to start my car while it’s warm. My MPG also has tanked to 3-6 MPG making the car pretty much undrivable but it still gets me back and forth to work. Only left me stranded once around the corner from my house.
New AFM, ICV, O2 sensor (has only one), TPS, coolant temp sensors, plug wires, cap, rotor, ignition coil, spark plugs, all new vacuum hoses, new intake boots, air filter, intake manifold gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, head gasket, swapped a known good DME in, new injectors, new FPR, and probably more I am forgetting.
I feel it may be because I have a major exhaust leak as my cats were gutted (they were clogged when I bought the car). I have been searching forums for a good while now and haven’t located my issue.
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one with this issue but you’re most likely parting that car out anyways.
Wow that is really perplexing because you have replaced just about everything there is to replace on an m30! Im not even sure id know where to turn for that
@@m3nameisjosh464 I feel it has something to do with my exhaust. I have an early 1990 535 that has only one o2 sensor. My car has the cats gutted out because I thought they were clogged when I first was diagnosing this issue.
By any chance, does your parts car have a similar set up (only one o2 sensor)?

@@m3nameisjosh464 Interesting... Maybe something with the lack of backpressure in the exhaust is throwing the o2 sensor off then. I honestly have no clue what is left to dig into on my car.
@@johnpickerton8736 honestly exhaust is pretty important but I don’t think itd cause that. O2 on these cars does effect running that majorly
My 92 E34 535i 5 speed that I bought for $500 is in better condition I’d hate to see the used car market around you. Love these cars wish I could find more.
