I'm planning on buying a '94 525i and this made me a lot more confident in my ability to perform basic maintenance, and it also made me much more confident in my choice of car especially after hearing the stereotypes of BMWs not being reliable lol, God bless my friend, love the content.

    I replaced the cabin filter in my E34 7/8 years ago. Hated it so much! My back was bending in all directions. This is because I’m from the UK and the steering column and pedals are in the way. Filter came in two pieces and even then it was such a difficult task. A task I’d never want to do ever again. You American/LHD E34 lovers are really fortunate.

    Great tutorial! I've feared doing my door handles and cabin filter for 10 yrs. no joke! But feel I should tackle it now. A mechanic will charge 1 hr. labor easy for the filter. All 5 series (prior to E60) dating back to later E12s, came with flashlights for the US, and most Euro models - yours is just missing one, which is common. Have you ever changed the blower switch resistor, accessed from the left side of center console? I hear they can cause fires and produce smoke and burning smell as the coils get old.

    • @MyersMotors
      @MyersMotors  2 года назад

      No time like the present! If I can do it anyone can. As far as the flashlight goes, it actually has a chunk of foam blocking off the socket which is from factory since this car wasn't optioned with one for whatever reason. This car was definitely a special order and it may have been something with shipping it back and forth overseas, needing batteries removed from the car or something.
      I've never done a blower resistor, no, but I am actually planning to tackle that in a part 2!

    Also beware of the windshield sprayers. They have an additional pressure regulator right before the sprayer under the hood wich tend to block and leak onto the hood insulation material and then leak over the engine bay. Just remove them and plug the sprayers to the cleaning water lines.

    Excellent Video... I just got a 540/6 and need to do those jobs on the door handles. The door handles catch open is that related to the gaskets or is that something different?

    • @MyersMotors
      @MyersMotors  2 года назад

      Thanks! Congrats on the 540, that's awesome! That's not an uncommon issue, I believe it has to do with the actual lubrication of the mechanism. You probably want to pull the door card and grease the joints, but honestly squirting a little WD40 through that little hole that grommet sits in might help.

    BMW really screwed the pooch with that cabin air filter. Ridiculously complicated.
    I have an 01 e320 mercedes and the main filters are behind the glove box. Four screws inside it and it slides out. They're right there. Then remove the lower panel which is hooked in and pull out the two carbon filters. Pretty easy.
    I changed these shortly after buying the car about five years ago and I could feel the difference in the airflow. There is actually a bypass switch for the carbon filters on the hvac panel.
    I still like BMWs better than mercedes because I like the way they drive as a result of their suspension set up. I had an 03 530i several years ago. Loved it.

    • @MyersMotors
      @MyersMotors  2 года назад +1

      Yeah it is overly complicated on the older cars, I think it was an oversight on the part of the engineers. On all my other newer BMWs the filters are right under the hood, don't even need tools to replace them. Even still, they're all great cars and I honestly prefer the look and feel of the older ones.
