    Neil is the Canadian Bob Dylan as far as songwriters are concerned but a far better musician and very good singer. The older I get the more I enjoy his work. He’s certainly in rare air ! Keep on Rockin in the free world and Long May you run!

    I love that Randy Bachman and Neil Young appear to be good friends. Two different talents, exceptionally accomplished ... no apparent show-biz egos - very humble approaches to what they do. Love hearing both of them talk. Neil is just the best. How did it take until 2017 for him to be recognized like this? "I know I can't sing. I get around it ... I get near it ..." awesome stuff.

    Heartfelt Congratulations to Neil Young & all of his family, co-musicians, fans & friends. A musical journey with so much soul... I have been a fan since the early 1970's, as a teenager living with my family in Winnipeg. Dad was in the army & we didn't have much. We lived on the armed forces base in military housing. Bought my first stereo from a shop down on the north side of Portage Avenue, not far from Main Street. I forgot the name of that furniture/electronics store. Loved that first stereo! I set it up in the unfinished basement & began collecting LP's in earnest. There was an old rug on the floor & some ratty furniture. Boards & cinder blocks for shelves. Some posters on the wall. Back then FM Radio was pretty good. I heard either, "Cinammon Girl" or "When You Dance I Can Really Love" on FM radio & was hooked! My high school buddies & I were off and running. There was great music, sometimes a little something to smoke. My folks were cool but curious, so we kept the basement window open, burned some incense. No women in sight of us & no wonder! Haha. This thing is, the music was incredible. Downtown there was this cool 'head shop' called "Autumn Stone". We bought albums, incense, pipes & hippie stuff there. I bought "After The Gold Rush" as soon as I could. To this day I have always loved & bought Neil Young's music, especially the early LP's with Crazy Horse. When I heard Neil's speech for his induction to the Canadian Songwriters Hall Of Fame Ceremony... it brought back all of the memories. Good memories & more. Thank you Neil Young for your music and words. I feel honored to be one of your millions of fans. We are all just tiny specks of light in that big old universe. Your light burns very bright!!

      Dear Gecko, Thank you so much for sharing this marvelous history about your love of music. I grew up in Wisconsin, mostly, and we also didn't have much, and any purchase -- whether a 45 record, an album ($$$!), or my first lipstick -- cost dearly, as I was then earning 25-cents an hour babysitting. You are a colorful and warm writer -- a true gift. thank you again

      @@dos-fslady3140 Thank you so much for your kind words Lynn B. It was a nice surprise to see your reply. I totally understand what you are sharing here. I actually started buying records a couple of years before I heard Neil Young. My brother and I delivered newspapers after school. It wasn't much money, but it allowed me to purchase a few 45's to share with my friends or trade for Beatles music! I was 15 years old when our family moved to Winnipeg. There was a lively music scene but the only way I could experience it was through FM radio, albums and back then, the cheap seats at concerts. I first heard Neil Young on FM radio fo course and followed his career in the hippie news mags and newspapers... Rolling Stone Magazine and some local press... We would go to the music stores to hang out, browse the publications, and then buy an album or something small... just to be there and trying to be cool. The thing that touches me about your reply is that I can visualize you babysitting to earn a little cash. Back then, money sure seemed hard to find. For my family, I always knew that we were working class poor and basically from the wrong side of the tracks. The only thing I had was that stereo and the start of my album collection. It was enough. I was happy with it. The power of Neil Young's music & lyrics lifted my spirits. I can remember cranking up those great songs from Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After The Gold Rush, Harvest... Cowgirl In The Sand, When You Dance ( I Can Really Love), Cinnamon Girl, Heart of Gold... such fantastic music. I still have those old albums today! I wrote a comment for Neil's Walk Like a Giant which I believe (sadly) may be Neil Young & Crazy Horse's last and perhaps greatest psychedelic anthem. Such power, finesse mixed with shock & awe. I am old now (65!) and proud to say that I remain a stubborn and loyal fan to Neil Young & (almost) every one of his musical journeys over the years. Thx again Lynn B & God Bless you and your kind heart.

      @@northerngeckocanada9826 Dear Gecko, Thanks so much for writing back with such a beautiful letter. I am 68, have almost no regrets, and despite loving all types of music from around the world, continue to play and cherish my 60s/70s collection to get me through long and lonely days of covid-quarantine. Moses, my life partner is retired from the VA, but now works for himself in maintenance/construction -- so he is out all day. We never went hungry when I grew up, but my dad believed in everyone pulling their own weight, and save save save for the future (my current mantra for Moses' kids & grandkids). But Moses grew up really poor in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and his dad only had an 8th-grade education and got any and all work he could find to feed family of 6 kids in shotgun-shack of a tiny house. They then moved to an uncle's property (uncle was a sheepherder, and he died in his wagon) in Northern New Mexico, where they had a water well and outdoor toilet, and a trip to town was a long journey. At 13, Moses started going to work with his dad when he could, taking turns with other guys driving a truck for hours to a distant bridge-building site to tie wire. Anyway, Moses and I often say how thankful we are to have grown up without much money, as it made everything we did and anything we bought all the more dear. Now we don't have to work, but still deeply appreciate the value of every single thing we do, or are able to buy. Right now Moses' son-in-law might have covid, and is self-quarantining & will go to emergency room if symptoms get any worse. But Moses' daughter and their new baby are doing just fine, and we are buoyed by our faith and belief that he will fully recover. Right now I will look up and listen to "Walk Like a Giant." With my heartfelt thanks and gratitude, Lynn in Albuquerque, NM

I just undersand today, after being listening to both Neil Young and Frank Zappa for 50 years now, I just understand what they had in common though they may look and sound very different. Humanity ! Witty Mind ! Simplicity ! Unaffectedness (if that word exists, I'm not sure being French) and Uncompromission. Every word a nail driven into Reality. And with such Humor ! Neil forever Young!

    • @TorkG8
      @TorkG8 6 лет назад +6

      Don, I just googled them, it said this was the first induction ceremony in six years. The CSHF was created by music publisher Frank Davies in 1998; the inaugural gala was held in 2003 with six more to follow. The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers (SOCAN) purchased it in December 2011 and has been working to update the brand and educate the public about its inductees and mandate since then. I still think he should have been inducted at their first induction ceremony.

    "I wanna thank the Great Spirit."
    "I'm proud to be a Canadian."
    Neil's been a musical hero of mine for, what is it, close to 40 years. I have a couple of other heros, too. Gradually, I've learned to accept the fact that I simply cannot appreciate *all* that my heroes do, nor all that they say. They aren't perfect, and neither am I (although I'm close, just ask my wife :-)
    Neil's above two statements hurt particularly bad. Believe me, I am all for the freedom to believe in your favorite fantasy. Allah, Buddah, Spaghetti Monsters, the Great Nothing, you name it. Go ahead, 'believe' in whatever you want. Show how we, as humans, are capable of 'believing' in our own fantasies; even in the stupidest, vilest, most heinous of 'supernatural' projections. It's just who we are, I guess; and tells volumes about us. I just feel a bit sad that my musical hero wants to express his gratitude toward some imagined 'Spirit' at an event that is about *him* and about what *he* was capable of. For some people, humans always fall short. They need to cling on to their fantasy. Somehow, Neil believes that he did not write 'Heart of Gold' by himself.
    'Proud to be a Canadian'. Nationalism isn't my cup of tea either. Of course, as a rule, Canadians are nice people. Belgians are nice people too, as are Egyptians, Birmese, Chileans, Cameroonese and Mongolians. We're not that different either: we get born, we live, we die, and in the mean time we make the best of it. Yes, all of us *love* the place we come from, and we connect to our 'heritage'. But 'pride'? Being 'proud' of something you couldn't really help? Something you didn't contribute to? I am 'proud' if I did something really well; I feel 'pride' when the Dutch soccer team wins an important game. Yet 'proud to be a Dutchman'? - no.
    It is easy to forgive Neil-my-hero for these statements. He has enriched my life more than he'll ever know. Yet he didn't need a 'Spirit' nor his being Canadian to mean that much to me. Neil-the-guy is enough for me.

    • @polara01
      @polara01 6 лет назад

      Simply being greatful is a much better word choice than pride I think... I've always had a problem with that word...it seems like an arrogant and boastful statement to make and is always at the expense of someone who was less fortunate it seems but I understand why people say it; when we get emotional about things. I've used it myself but usually in context of complimenting a loved one on an accomplishment. It seems most suited for that scenario but Neil has done so much as a citizen of this planet for it's people and the earth itself (fight against the evil Monsanto, ect) so cut him some slack here... I actually love it when he thanked "the great spirit in the sky". I am not religious at all but just raised a disalusioned catholic but am very spiritual and believe Jesus had it right but the sam e group that killed him continue to worship the Darkseid and control the planet through it's monetary system (Rothschilds/Federal Reserve Bank) and all their affiliates (Monsanto, ect). Neil knows all this and is doing what he can but most of us are just mislead sheep and will willingly go to the slaughterhouse without a clue... (or rabbit) Peace, Bob
