What a class act. The humility. Geddy stopping at the top of the stairs to let Neil precede him. Neil - the "new guy" - having the honor of speaking for the band. I never knew that Neil spoke French so fluently, but I'm not surprised, and shouldn't be. He left us too soon.

Guys he was a French Canadian 😂 R.I.P. Neil Peart you will be forever remembered as the inspiration to just about every drummer in music. I have had two heros in my life Pat Golden my father and Neil Peart. For their inspiration and work ethics. Their love to help anyone in need. Whether it be an offer of a hot meal to a homeless person or a hand fixing a car. To always pay it forward .

Absolutely... The humility. You hit the nail on the head with that one. Anyone notice during that speech that he gave equal credit to Geddy and Alex? Or how about before that happened him saying there must be a mistake for the award. Neil was once quoted as saying "I wasn't talented... but I was relentless". Wasn't talented?!?!? If that were for a minute true, then where exactly does that leave the other 99.99% of drummers in the world? Truth be told... If I were a monk who was seeking the ultimate lesson in humility, I'd need look no further than Neil Peart's opinion of himself. Want to know the real reason both Geddy and Alex yielded to Neil when they appeared on stage... because they both acknowledged without hesitation what EVERYONE already knew - and that's that if you are going to give credit to Rush for songwriting/lyrics then despite the voice of humility telling you the credit should be equally distributed that there is only one man that should be taking center stage. Worthy? Neil Peart... world class drummer and lyricist (without question) but above and beyond that he was an exceptional and ultra-humble human being...

      in his younger days

Everybody keeps talking about Neil Peart's loss in terms of the drummer and the lyricist he has been, undoubtedly a true and humble master, but to me what hurts the most about his loss is how he didn't get a chance to enjoy his second family. He retired and then boom unavoidable tragedy struck him again...A truly iconic figure that shall be remembered forever. No one will ever write lyrics like him, no one will ever approach the craft of drumming like he did. Thank you Neil Peart for everything. Farewell to The Professor.

@@cygnustsp well I sure hope one day that you are proven wrong. I will still live my life and love and give all I can to all that need... Even Neil said in interviews that the way churches and other organizations weren't acting Christ like so obviously as he grew older there were writings that he considered to be correct and very much believable. God doesn't control what we do or what happens to us. We are given choice. Things don't happen for reason that happen by our choices. Our bodies created cells everyday some of those cell are left without certain parts. I call them restarted cells. Our bodies don't fight these cells because they are you and your DNA These cells begin their journey through our bodies and as time goes on they reproduce just as normal cells. And as I said your body doesn't destroy them because they are you They park themselves and as time goes on they reproduce enough to create tumors and other sickness. This is something that could be eraticated at least I believe so. Yet there is way to much money being made to eliminate this from the pockets of big business. I am sorry if you blame God but you should blame man. For having to ability and not allowing the cure for such an awful illness to overtake such brilliant people like Neil Peart.

Rare has there been a band whose member truly loved each other as this one has. Band's become business and you don't always like those you work with or for. Rush is one of those rare bands. Genesis possibly being the other. One of the many things that made Rush so unique was their interplay with each other. They're genuine love for each and their protecting each other. Even at the end. Shielding their own to preserve their dignity and privacy. How bittersweet a moment like this is. As a "hardcore" fan of Rush but an unknown to them, I've always appreciated my relationship with the band as it was. I was the fan buying the records and concert tickets. And they produced the songs that would help shape my life, my drumming and whatever talent in writing I've been (occasionally) told I have. I never wanted to meet them as I always felt one of us would be disappointed. But I've always been proud to have been a fan. Because they are the band I felt was the gold standard. Not just in writing, but in how they presented themselves. How they behaved. No rehabs stints. No domestic violence or embarrassing moments that make you go "Really???" No reality television shows or endless 'Farewell's. Maybe it's a Canadian thing. Or maybe it's just a human thing. But how lucky are we to have been alive while they were. To see them as they were. Generations from now, when we are all dead and buried, there will be new Rush fans discovering them saying "Man, I wish I was around when they were". And we were.
I'm also thinking about how cruel the twists of life can take and how evil life can seem. Neil never had the opportunity to see either of his daughter's grow up into the strong, proud and productive women that I am positive they would have and will be. While I consider myself an Agnostic on a good day, I can only hope that Neil has reunited with his lost daughter and will somehow along with her look down on his surviving daughter and guide, steer and continue to influence her and her development.
From a still very saddened but very proud fan since 1982, thank you and godspeed to whatever lies ahead.

Im not canadian, im colombian. I must have been 10 years old the first time i ever heard rush. I remember i was at my grandmas, waiting for my older cousin to arrive, from the airport. He was coming to visit the family in Bogotá, from N.Y after a couple of years, and I was thrilled, he was almost 10 yrs older than me, so he was my idol. He finally got home, and as I was with my old cuz, helping him unpack, he took out 2 cds (I didnt even have a cd player back then, must have been somewhere near 1988/89, you gotta understand back in the day, in south america, those new technologies arrived a bit late and a bit overpriced), Caress Of Steel and 2112... he had a Sony Cd Player, and asked me to take the cd, put it in and play it. I followed and what happened next just blew my mind, and ever since then... my life changed. I'm a rocknrolla a metal head, I love music but for me Rush are just beyond taste or likes. Theyre a part of my life, memory and history just as much as my grandma, my uncles, my cuz, my parents etc... Absolutely wonderful human being. I play drums because of Neil and I teach music because it is the true universal language. Nothing makes me smile more than to see any one of my students playing drums with a sense of ultimate love for music. Thanks Neil for putting me on course to spread the gospel of music!

*I LOVE GOOD MUSIC* which includes many artists, and I love RUSH. The greatest three member band EVER? The greatest drummer EVER? In my opinion, EVER isn't the answer, but what makes debating whether it is accurate fun. Neal Peart said one of his favorite words is *"enthusiastic".* It is what I always felt at their concerts and hearing their amazing music. And for me, that is my EVER.

Merci RUSH

What a humble trio of humans. Why can't they be in our White House??? As I hear his words, tears ran down my face - tears of happiness to have witnessed many concerts, tears of callouses on my fingers from playing drums on my car's steering wheel, and tears of sadness for Rush plays no more. Rest in Peace Neil, and thank you for teaching us that "the point of a journey is not to arrive. Anything can happen". Merci Beacuoup, Gracias, and Thanks

I think what I find most amazing and difficult to believe is that after forty plus years working together, the fame and success doesn't seem to have changed who they were as individuals. They all seem humble, sober and profoundly grateful to their fans. They still regard one another as friends, and that can't be easy given all the time they spent together on the road, away from their families, and life's ups and downs. I don't think I ever heard any of them complain or say anything contemptuous about anyone or any organization and they rarely (ever?) tooted their own horn, no pun intended. They're modest, unassuming, appreciative, extremely hard-working and consummate professionals. They were one of the most talented group of musicians ever to take the stage and wrote some of the most kick ass rock and roll ever! I'm thankful they FINALLY received much of the recognition and accolades they so rightly deserved before Neil's passing. RIP, Mr. Peart. Your music and epic song-writing live on!

Neil was a fricking genius, I can't even fathom to have 1/2 his brain and also 1/10 th of his talent in drumming. But most importantly the heart being crushed by the death of his daughter..then his wife later. And to go on 2 years alone for a motorcycle trip and come back and become an even better drummer going thru back to basics and do Buddy Rich stuff to cue BACK to an already opened armed Geddy and Alex is THE BEST story. Not too many bands can, and probably won't ever claim this. I have to say, to add to their talent and love and dedication to each other, plus their love for the band...it's safe to say that Rush is, and will be for decades, THE best rock band ever. (Just my opinion)

What an awesome band. How could it not be with such awesome people like these three working together. I wonder what Neil's last words were to Ged and Alex when he knew it would be the last time to speak to them. What was his good byes to them. I wonder how Neil felt when he knew it was his last concert and he had to then face an incurable disease and leave everything he loved. The only good about it was being able to say good bye instead of just dying abruptly. I would want to know if I were going. My last moments would be filled with everything that was important to me instead of going to work, or sitting in traffic going to work day after day. My Aunt Fay lived to be 90. she said to me when it was close to her time " Somethings got to kill you' I was appalled then laughed. I rest as ease and said to her, "You know Aunt Fay, your right. We all have to have something kills us so we can die. We are not meant to stay here forever. We are souls living in a dirt body that decays. When it cannot contain us any longer we have to leave. Jesus said "Don't worry about your body, worry about your soul because that is who you really are. Neil is still alive, just not here. The next life is the real life because it last forever. Neil once said he was riding his motorcycle and on a church sign it said "Smoking or not smoking how would you like your eternity?" That is something to really think about. I accept the free gift of Jesus dying in my place. It's that easy to get into Heaven. God just asks us to believe and some people cannot even do that.

Make no mistake, Neil was NOT a shrinking violet. When he spoke publicly, whether it be in a one-to-one interview or in front of a sizeable audience sat in rows he did it admirably.. He's commanding about it. Confident.
Too much has been made about his insularity. It really was just that he shunned the trappings of celebrity and the falsities of living up to an image. Ironically, from what I've seen, Neil is the one who always has much to say and says it!!!
