He hurt a lot of people and he was an asshole in several occasions - he's the first to admit it. I suggest reading his biography Shakey - it gives quite an incredible full picture of this great but troubled man.
Here's a nice story for you. One day after this speech, Neil would play an unplanned encore with Pearl Jam and got excited. So excited, he ditched up Crazy Horse and producer Briggs without even telling them, and flew to Seattle to record with Pearl Jam (that would be Mirror Ball). His beloved band, who he "couldn't make it without them", practiced the songs a whole day in the studio before understanding Neil won't show up. When interviewed about it, Neil said he felt it was the right choice creatively, and to quote him "you got to make calls that hurt people. There's no way around it. It's the only way to go". This whole story happened literally three days after this speech.

I've never been able to figure out quite how I feel about Neil. He's quirky, original, sincere, aggravating, unpredictable, and a bunch of other things that make him one of a kind in rock music. What I do know for sure is that I've never been able to stop listening to him since I first heard him in the Buffalo Springfield days. There have been a few times I really didn't like some stuff he did, but there has never been a time I could live without him.
When he stopped for a second after her thanked Kurt Cobain, I felt that. He almost broke down. He knew what the world had lost and Kurt made him realize how important his music is to this world, and we thank you, Neil. We also thank you, Kurt.
I must admit that was perhaps the most entertaining and touching moment from any music awards ceremony I've ever seen. Two awesome talented guys; both have contributed a lot to my life's enjoyment.
Who gives a damn if he thanked the fans?! It's his talent and perseverance that brought him here, he's an amazing talent and I thank him for sharing his music, whether he gives a damn about me or not
With all the music legends who have fallen this year (Prince, Bowie, Merle Haggard, Natalie Cole, Leon Russell, Leonard Cohen.) I think Eddie's words at 3:31 have even more meaning than back in 1995.
+CRC TV True, but it's not like he's doing (dead) Kurt a favour, he obviously was so impacted by him that there he is a long way into his career with his moment of celebration feelings he needs to mention Kurt. I guess Kurt impacted him that much.
I thanked Neil Young for his Music I even learned to play his song and Harmonica. I still listen to his music until now and I even play his music in my Band.
@Noble Failures HAHA... Noble is so ignorant. I love seeing comments from people that "think" they know. I'm willing to bet this dude has never been in a professional studio, been around, worked, and dealt with professional artist both in and out of studio. Yet he'll still stand and open his mouth puking out his ignorance letting true industry people know how full of shit he really is. I would usually say "it's always wise to keep your mouth shut" , but if I did that I would have nothing to laugh to about. Noble Failures, thank you. Maybe someday some true noble industry educated human being will have some pity and fly you out here to New York or LA and slap you around with some knowledge. If so, keep your mouth shut around those that really know what they're talking about. Until then, carry on there, lambchop.
Greatest Canadian Artist ever and still rock hard. I saw him live a few years ago and it was magical, he played a solid 3 hours of everything he's done :)!

Neil did choke up and his eyes filled with tears. No one gets any more genuine than him. Neil's always been honest and an easy going man. I was going to say, like one of us, but I won't. No one is like him.
Neil actually helped form my life since I was about 14 . Him and Bob . My 1st love was a Neil fanatic so I hurried up and learned some of Neil's songs and that's how I won her love . Pretty weird , huh ???
I have played his stuff. It gave meaning to music for me. I am disappointed he didn’t mention CSNY in his thanks. Aside from Harvest many wouldn’t be familiar with him without them.
***** I don't bitch or whine I point out truth. I do know good music today and it's not what you hear on the radio or buy in stores. It's underground where artists are still artists and not puppets. Speaking of puppets...........
Really dude? Did I not type clear enough for you? Because I'm more than happy to go get a box of crayons and draw you a picture. I prefer not to though, I'm drinking a beer and most likely in for the night.
To all those that felt Neil's mentioning of Cobain was an insincere attempt at being hip or an afterthought, should think again. Neil was inspired by the new music coming out in the early 90's. All you have to do is look and listen to his albums during that period; Mirror Ball, Sleeps With Angels and Weld. Young also experienced deaths through drugs, he knew the fragility of the rock and roll lifestyle.
When Neil found out that Kurt wrote Neil's lyrics in his suicide note he says it really fucked with him and he was really upset over his death, Kurt's death gave Neil inspiration for the whole album.
Hard to say what brought it about, but he divorced Pegi in 2014, (she died of cancer 1/1/19) and the Royal Canadian is now married to Darryl Hannah, which is something Jackson Browne never did.
I remember when I got my first album..it was Queen Killers...Then my mom went to her closet and pulled out a Harvest sleeve. Been a Neil Young fan ever since.
Well, I have learned dozens of his songs after that. I feel great after knowing that he entered into the hall of fame! Both speeches were kinda shy but very nice. just felt that a mention to those fellows C,S & N was missing...
We Americans admire and love Canadian artists immensely. Don't fall into the negativity and hype that too often exists in this world. I have so much admiration for Neil Young. Hard to put into words how touched i am to watch and hear him sing.
+In It To Spin It Well, Kurt brought back real music at a time when big hair bands was mainstream. Neil tried to reach out to Kurt when he was heavy on drugs. Neil dedicated an album to Kurt after his death.
Noble Failured,, It's good to have ''Failured'' in here.. Neil was not perfect , but he did try his best. somehow and still is... Big Up 2 him 4 sure..

I must admit that was perhaps the most entertaining and touching moment from any music awards ceremony I've ever seen. Two awesome talented guys; both have contributed a lot to my life's enjoyment.
Who gives a damn if he thanked the fans?! It's his talent and perseverance that brought him here, he's an amazing talent and I thank him for sharing his music, whether he gives a damn about me or not
My brother was named after Neil Young. He & Eddie go back a long ways.Music soothes the soul.Go somewhere else if you're a hater!
wow! didn't know that.
With all the music legends who have fallen this year (Prince, Bowie, Merle Haggard, Natalie Cole, Leon Russell, Leonard Cohen.) I think Eddie's words at 3:31 have even more meaning than back in 1995.
FACT: Neil Young is one HELL of a classy man. He did NOT have to mention Kurt Cobain on his night. But he did anyway, out of mutual respect.
+CRC TV True, but it's not like he's doing (dead) Kurt a favour, he obviously was so impacted by him that there he is a long way into his career with his moment of celebration feelings he needs to mention Kurt. I guess Kurt impacted him that much.
@Laverne Johnson Mean
"things have been good for me for a long time, so if I look sad ... it's bullshit .. forget it ... I'm doing good"
And so incredibly deserving of the honor...Neil your music has not only inspired me but has gotten me thru some dark moments. Thank You. Rock On!
I thanked Neil Young for his Music I even learned to play his song and Harmonica. I still listen to his music until now and I even play his music in my Band.
loved the way he thanked Kurt Cobain
yeah, he got emotional about it
@Noble Failures lmao
@Noble Failures Right, because you know everything. You, indeed, live up to your name.
lol this nigga@Noble Failures
Love you uncle Neil , your music will be with me forever
I love Neil Young. He inspired me to pick up a guitar. Hey hey my my rock and roll will never die.
Long May You Run, Uncle Neil. Long May You Run.
Listening to him since Buffalo Springfield but living on the edge of North America only saw him live once. I could not believe I was in the same building as him; a highlight for sure.
Eddie Vedder & Neil Young - 2 of my all-time favorites! 🎤🎸🎤🎸🎤🎸
All of the band should have been given this trophy and inducted!
You said share my thoughts...ok Neil was real and very gifted and thoughtful ...and like he said there many great Bands out there...For me music saved my soul...music has changed my mood for the better so many times...and many people that are in this room on this video here are the gifts we got this great music from...So I want to thank you all ...you did good Neil...proud of you...Lansing
i think he got choked up mention Kurt Cobain
He sure did, the last line of Kurt's suicide letter was one of Neil's lyrics in hey hey my my. "It's better to burn out than to fade away" .
Neil did choke up and his eyes filled with tears. No one gets any more genuine than him. Neil's always been honest and an easy going man. I was going to say, like one of us, but I won't. No one is like him.
CONCUR...
Eddie Vedder did a class job with his speech.
If Neil Young had one fan or ten million, his musical output would be the very same. He only does it for himself. He's unique and a true artist.
"I'm really happy that there is so much great music out there." That's something you won't here today:(
tree.house truth hurts
Maybe if you stopped bitching so much about how music todays sucks you could actually take the time to discover the good music that's out there today.
***** I don't bitch or whine I point out truth. I do know good music today and it's not what you hear on the radio or buy in stores. It's underground where artists are still artists and not puppets. Speaking of puppets...........
AgileMJOLNIR So basically what you're telling me is that there is good music out there today, but there isn't any good music out there today? Okay.
Neil Young is a true treasure and inspiration, his music is absolute gold. His stare to the crowd at the very start said alot, thats for sure.
"I love you Pegi" Now we know what an awesome man he is.
Cheers, Neil. Not a single Canadian; camping/fishing/road trip goes by with out a good Neil Young song. I switch Rush off the radio to listen to you.
Well, I have learned dozens of his songs after that. I feel great after knowing that he entered into the hall of fame! Both speeches were kinda shy but very nice. just felt that a mention to those fellows C,S & N was missing...
I respect Neil Young for he unique voice pattern!! He work with my close friend Richie FURAY !! He finally let his guard after Buffalo Springfield!!
I could listen to him talk ALL DAY LONG
What a GREAT MAN!!!!!!
For ME, you are really someone to look up to Neil!
We Americans admire and love Canadian artists immensely. Don't fall into the negativity and hype that too often exists in this world. I have so much admiration for Neil Young. Hard to put into words how touched i am to watch and hear him sing.
damn, Neil thanking Kurt for inspiration.
+In It To Spin It Well, Kurt brought back real music at a time when big hair bands was mainstream. Neil tried to reach out to Kurt when he was heavy on drugs. Neil dedicated an album to Kurt after his death.
In It To Spin It I
In It To Spin It true humility on display
@Noble Failures lol no
Noble Failured,, It's good to have ''Failured'' in here..
Neil was not perfect , but he did try his best. somehow
and still is... Big Up 2 him 4 sure..
A living legend. Godspeed Neil.
