The key is in the first line, “He said I’ll love you till I die.” He kept his word. It was common in the past to place a black wreath on the grieving family’s door. Soon they’ll carry him away (to the grave).

They place a wreath on the door so people will know that there's a death in that home & no one will come knocking on the door on non-important issues. I still plan on doing that.

He loved her. She loved him once too, but then she left. He was hurt and never stopped loving her, and then he died. His heartbreak never mended. She came to see him one last time -- in his coffin, at his funeral. This is one of the saddest songs ever.
The musical instruments were harmonica and pedal steel guitar.

Love how this song tells you right from the start what it is all about .. "He said I will love you until I die"..... and yet so many people MISS what the song is about until the end, or they have to be TOLD what it is about.
BUT when you go into the song KNOWING what is actually happening, it has a different emotional impact. A man dies, and his best friend has to explain how he FINALLY stopped loving a woman that is no longer in his life, to the point that people wondered if she would even be bothered to show up to his funeral or not.

George Jones was a country legend singer songwriter from the 50's-80's. He struggled with alcoholism & drugs during his life. He was married at one time to fellow country music singer Tammy Wynette & they had some great duets together. He had so many hits such as "White Lightnin'", "She Thinks I Still Care", "We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds", "Love Bug", "Things Have Gone to Pieces", "The Race Is On", "My Favorite Lies", "I'll Share My World With You", "Take Me", "A Good Year For The Roses," "If My Heart Had Windows" & many others.

It doesn't matter what kind of music you like, this song is still a top masterpiece.
I played in a Country band for awhile, and we did this song many times; then one Saturday night - on stage - it hit me... He's being carried away in a box!
    A good choice today!

I also would sometimes play in a country band with my dad, my uncle, and two cousins, in the various dives and VFW halls, etc. I've played this song dozens and dozens of times with my dad. He had always been a country musician. When he died, rather than have the church play religious organ music, which he couldn't stand, I put together a tape of the various artists doing the songs he used to play and sing and this song was one of them. Everybody understood why we did it, it was the only thing that really made sense. Anyway, this song really takes me back to some special times, as it does for you. Best regards.

George Jones was to perform near my small town in South-East Ohio many years ago. He was a heavy drinker who earned the nickname "No Show Jones" for not showing up at concerts. He and his Band arrived early on the day of the show and at some point Jones went looking for Booze. He was missing at show time time and finally the crowd that had been waiting and drinking all day were told that the show was canceled. A riot ensued, The Sheriff was knocked out, total chaos. George was found by his manager several days later in a Motel in Florida with two bottles of whiskey and a bucket of KFC chicken, drunk. That was suppose to be the first concert at Possum Hollar Music Park, they shut down after that.

Great use of the instruments in this song to set a sad, sad tone. Harmonica and steel guitar used perfectly. How many songs today are about a love this strong? He loved her, even though she stopped loving him. Only death ended his devotion. You definitely get hooked into the story.

What happened between the two of them is that he died. That's why they placed a wreath upon his door and why they "carried him away" in his coffin. The key to the whole song is in the very first line of the lyrics.

What this song is saying is that she left him or quit loving him but he never stopped loving her until he died. He saw her one last time and that was her looking at him laying in the coffin at the funeral. George is one of my moms favorite singers even though she went to heaven in 2017. This was her era music basically but i have no issues listening to a lot of old country. If you were ever looking for peace then listening to this kind of music can give you it. I can suggest a song for you to listen to. I can't remember what they called this type music but its old country but basically music plays in the background while the singer tells a story. If you can handle it listen to Teddy bear by Red Sovine. I wouldn't be surprised if it makes you cry, i am dead serious. Even if you don't bring it on here you should give it a listen just to hear a beautiful story.

Recommend: Jim Croce. Song is Time in a Bottle. Jim wrote the song when he found out his wife, Ingrid, was pregnant with first child. Jim died in 1973 at age 30 in a plane crash. Five days after he died his wife received a letter from Jim. In it Jim said he was tired of touring and was going to quit music and come home. He said to Ingrid "Remember its the first 60 years that count and i have 30 to go. I love you". He never made it home. This song will last forever.😊😊❤

I was on a business trip to Johnson City, TN in 1980, shortly after this song came out. For lunch, went to a bar and grill with some of my hosts. It had mostly a college crowd and served mostly burgers and pitchers of beer. I liked the burgers, so after working late that evening, I stopped back there alone, it was crowded. The jukebox was constantly playing. This song came up several times. Every time it did, when the lyrics got to "They placed a wreath upon his door", several people would hold their arms above their heads in the shape of a wreath and sing along. Made me realize how loved this song was.

She came to see him one last time (on his death bed). He kept his word to her that he would love her until his death. As others have said a wreath on the door use to be a sign of a death in the household, not a Christmas decoration as it is commonly used for today (at least in the US).

For my money this is the 2nd greatest country song ever. Only Hank Williams Sr. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry is number 1. Having said that this
comes real close. A lot of those old classic country singers lived some rough lives and did some serious Hell raising. Lends a lot of authenticity
to their music. Lastly you think this one is sad listen to Our Bed of Roses by George Jones that song can really rearrange a lot of your brain cells
and leave you in a puddle of your own soul.

To find a good place to START you might want to find a RECORDS SOLD LIST of the Most Popular Country Singers or different DECADES or the different styles of Country music (which can include Country Rock) ... or the CMA Country Music Awards on TV (that happen every year) ... Christian Gospel can also be found in Country music

Oh Biss, country music is such a HUGE rabbit hole. The "old" country vs "modern" country alone is like comparing Elvis to Alex Terrible in the "Rock" category. The differences are so vast it's hard to believe they are in the same genera. Anyway, I'm glad to see you getting started with the "older" stuff even though Garth Brooks is more modern than George Jones. Maybe next time you could stay with the older country and go with Hank Willams Sr., Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, or Roy Clark.

Great reaction to a great story teller. There are so many beautiful country songs in history. If you're ever interested in a fast placed country song with just instrumentals you can check out Foggy Mountain break down by Earl Scruggs and Friends with banjos, fiddle, harmonica, piano, keyboard, steel guitar, drums, acoustic guitar and electric guitar. ❤🎶

You will find in Country music. There is sometimes a double meaning or a saying somethings differently.
There is a live version to this song. Next, I would suggest George Jones, Who's going to fill thier shoes.

HOPING after reading the comments you will listen to this one again, on your own and not a reaction is fine.... just to see how much more emotional it is KNOWING the guy only stopped loving someone because he died.
