  • The ‘Chromatic’ Fantasia and fugue in D minor, performed by Menno van Delft for All of Bach, was already legendary in its day. It almost certainly started out as an improvisation. “When Bach improvised, he had power over all 24 keys; he could do whatever he wanted with them”. Biographer Forkel repeats it time and time again: Bach was a real wizard on the keyboard.

A brilliant, an excellent, an OUTSTANDING performance. And yet even with that said, it demonstrates clearly - if you listen closely - the fact that of all the keyboard instruments the clavichord is the most demanding, the most mercilessly unforgiving. Unlike the spinett, the virginal, the harpsichord or the organ (not to mention the piano), the clavichord lays bare EVERY imperfection in technique, be it ever so slight or minuscule or minute or seemingly insignificant. Perhaps that - and the soft, unobtrusive volume level produced by the clavichord - made it the preferred instrument for home keyboard practice up to around 1800.

    Wait, this is all IMPROVISED?
Bach improvising a fantasia? I can see that. Much of his baroque style is here, and the chord progressions are great with a somewhat free structure (which is the definition of fantasia).
But a fugue? That's a complicated beast of writing and counterpoint. I knew Bach was a genius, but creating a fugue that's entirely improvised still has me fascinated to a pondering degree.
P.S.: Big thanks to Van Delft for playing this masterpiece, and quite perfectly I might add!

@@herrickinman9303 Jamming is perfectly fine, a very popular term with all kinds of musicians, including classical. There's nothing remotely wrong or ''low class'' about this expression, It's also much more practical than saying ''improvising with other musicians''. Also, don't treat your ideology as absolute truth.

@@matteomagurno3068 Wrong. You're misusing the term. By definition, _jamming_ refers to improvisation between 2 or more musicians. This is a statement of fact, not "ideology." Your insistence on applying the term _jamming_ to improvisation by one musician or improvisation in classical music reflects 1) your ignorance of the meaning of the term and 2) possibly your low class.

Nice reminder that his first biographer, Forkel, reported that "[Bach] liked best to play upon the clavichord," which he thought was "the most convenient for the expression of his most refined thoughts, and did not believe it possible to produce from any harpsichord or pianoforte such a variety in the gradations of tone as on this instrument..."

That stripes on the video image are called 'interlacing'. You could fix this just applying 'deinterlacing' filter in your favorite video editor software.
