@@TheBonsaiZone It's a great thing!😂 I live in a city And we don't really have any ground to plant anything that isn't covered with concrete or asphalt But then bonsai (tree in a pot) came along I have no idea why i didn't think of pots before😂 but it changed everything
Nigel Sir,this tree has always been and will always be my favourite as it was the root pruning of this tree that I ever watched in your channel and led me to suscribe it.Will be waiting for the root pruning of this tree due this coming spring as you mentioned.Fantastic tree this is,just superb👌
I have one of these I call Phoenix. I started it from a seed about 4 years ago. in it's first summer, it nearly died. I had it in the wrong soil and had been overwatering it. When it sprouted from below the soil I knew it would have a chance hence the knickname Phoenix out of the ashes.
This was great timing, just finished watching the entire lemon playlist 😇 incredible to see the development over the years. Good job! Your channel is great!
Wow Nigel! Your lemon tree is really starting to develop a much more mature look. I have not been able to watch many of your videos lately so I was so glad to catch this one. The new pot brings a lot of brightness to the tree,
@@TheBonsaiZone Yes, I recently started making short videos when I work on work on my trees for that exact reason. And, of course, inspired by the long term progress Ive see on your trees.
20 years and still growing the primary branches... You have patience! Citrus trees tend to produce "erratic" overgrown branches. If you let the tree grow more before cutting back, you can choose one as new leader, for tape and trunk movement. Citrus roots easily, and the best way to get rid of the tap root from seed is ground-layering. You can get good radio roots in one season.
Was hoping to see your lemon tree. It looks beautiful Nigel. I got my own mini lemon tree last year and will be designing it /maybe root prune it in spring. I do leave it outside where it's around 2-10 Celsius at night.
Excellent little lemon tree. Great pruning techniques. Question: Has your tree ever flowered? Mine flower at the oddest time of the year, in the dead of winter in my dark basement.
Mr. Saunders! I really enjoy watching you care for these plants, and explain the finer workings of it all. In my minor collection of bonsai viewing, I don't think I've seen anybody replace the moss that gets removed from the base of the tree. Why is that? Is it more beneficial after pruning to allow the moss to regrow on its own? Does the removed moss not take hold if placed back on? Hope all goes well.
Very nice Nigel. I lost a lot of my trees when I moved to Las Vegas, NV. The heat was more than the trees could handle but I'm learning how to grow them inside and when to put them outside. I'd like to send you some more pictures of what I've started some time if you like. Also, where do you get your moss?
i remember videos where you would do multiple updates on various trees. do you do that still? also, this is really cool as i grow fruit trees and am recently starting some of my first bonsai trees. starting the journey now, im 20 as of march
Hey, Nigel! I live in a tropical climate. Zone 10. There is a tree I want from some 8 which is a little colder. How can I grow a temperate tree in a tropical climate?
I love the look of your tree. I just purchased a lemon tree from a local garden centre. It looks pretty healthy and must have previously flowered because it currently has 16 tiny lemons developing (about the size of my pinky fingernail). Do you think there's any chance they will continue to develop? The branches don't look strong enough yet to support the weight of a lemon; so, I'm wondering if it's too young a plant? Maybe I should work on the roots and branch structure awhile before letting it grow lemons?
The Lemons could definitely break the branches as they grow. Some people build a support under the lemon to prevent this. I'd enjoy the lemons this year and then work on growing the tree to get it strong. You can also thin the fruit on the tree to help too.
Its so relaxing watching you work on your trees. I have 2 lemon trees I grew from seed that are over 5 ft. Tall in pots (not bonsai) do you think i should prune them now?
I’ve been wondering, I know some trees are indoor trees and some are outdoor trees, and seeing as how you’ve got lots of experience growing trees from a seed, could I begin an outdoor tree from a seed inside my house towards the end of winter and move it outside for good when spring hits or is it just best to wait until spring? Completely off topic from the video, I just watch your videos quite often and am aware of your ability to maintain a plant from a seed and just happened to be in the middle of watching this video when I started wondering
Yes, you can start them indoors about now and keep them out of the frost. They will grow slowly the first year and then after a winter rest they will grow normally the second year!
I currently have a grown from seed lemon tree that's about a year old. I will beginning to shape it, however, I've noticed in the development of this specific tree you never introduce wiring. In most of your videos it appears there isn't a lot of wiring. I really enjoy learning you can achieve great results without it.
Nigel, this is my favorite bonsai of all! Thank you for the update. Would cutting the leaves in half as they get bigger help the tree redirect energy to start new growth/branches?
I just got into bonsaï and my first is a lemon tree. I'm wondering about the nutriments to give, schedule, quantity. I'm trying with a wild Canadian Maple and a pine too. Do they all need different nutriments?
Mine have gone dormant, they have lost their leaves and I've stopped watering them. It hard to see them like that, but I hope once they go back outside in spring the growing will resume!
Yes im from south africa we in summer now and had my seeds in water for 2 days then removed the shell now its in cotton roots are coming out so im happy
Hi Nigel, I have a pretty old potted lemon tree my late mother left with me that I'm interested in repotting for bonsai. I'm just not sure how viable it would be. It's pretty tall at around 40" with a thick lower trunk, potted in a conventional 15" plant pot. Do you think it would survive repotting and root trimming to a smaller and more shallow bonsai pot? If so what size pot would you recommend?
Do you take any special care of your lemon tree compared to the other trees? Like a different soil mix or a different fertilizer? I had a really nice grafted kumquat tree and a few small lemon trees grown from seeds but no matter what I did sooner or later they all suddenly started losing leaves and died :(. No matter what soil/fertilizer/light conditions I provided.
I don't give the Citrus trees any special treatment, I do fertilize them every time I water and they get a dormant period in winter here, where they are at a cooler temperature. They don't like to dry out, especially on hot days, they are one of the first trees to start going limp.
Great video Nigel. One question- have you ever hard pruned a citrus back to a stump? I have an inexcusably straight trunk for 90% of the tree and it’s either an air layer or a trunk chop I think
Hi Nigel, just one question, how many times during the year you pruning your trees? if I understood correctly, you did only one pruning and then you let the tree grow all year?
Yes, when you are developing a tree, pruning once or twice a year is fine, as the tree develops, it needs to be pruned more often. This Lemon tree was pruned just once.
hi, Nigel! i have citrus trees, too. i find them very sensitive to changes in light, particularly if you take them from inside to outside. i live in a similar region to you so my level of sunlight is about the same. do you do anything special to 'transition' your trees to the outdoor sun in the warmer weather?
I bring mine from indoors into the greenhouse first. Most of the trees can do this transition well without any problems. Before I had the greenhouse, I would have to put them in the shade and slowly transition them to sun. This took almost a month.
Yes, it got a lemon this year and they do grow into full size fruit. Generally on bonsai you need to support the fruit so it doesn't break the branch from the weight.
