i genuinely look forward to your sunday uploads. you are the only bonsai channel that every video has some kind of progress involved. its great to see! i subbed a few weeks back and have now watched every video. Keep up the good work, and all the best.
Cheers, i appreciate that! :) but yeah, i love the progressions haha. Its just annoying that they are so slow/take so long but if i make enough videos about one tree it will be cool to watch it slowly change over the years
I'm really liking the progression of this tree. I can't believe the amount of growth it has pumped out over the last year! I'm learning so much from watching your pruning techniques - thank you so much!
Keep up the great work. I sat my little lemon bonsai next to my laptop so we could watch this video together. I'm pretty sure my lemon was inspired by yours; I could only stare in disappointment at my twig in a pot.
Cheers hahah i am sure your twig will soon reach the level of my ever so slightly thicker twig in no time. I'm sure we will both end up with something decent in a few years
I really enjoyed this series. I've just started some lemon seeds myself. I'm planning on making a few clump style, and some by themselves. Thanks for the great videos!
Good work! Blimey you do a lot more pruning than I do! But then again you said you don't remember doing half of it, maybe I actually prune that much too and just forgot!
Shit man, you’d think you’d have a little more melanin in your skin by June, but hey…that’s Ireland for ya! Killer tree. You really go for it from day one with the little pots. Impressed you were able to break up that root ball. Well played as always.
Love these videos! I am also growing Lemon "Pre Bonsai" from seed, inside under artificial light also, thrilled to see your progress, I have had a lot of necessary pruning due to height restrictions and now it is time to pick a style for them, I have 4, all where planted at the same time. Would love any information you would give. Thank you.
Ahh sounds very cool. hopefully they are going well. As for pruning it depends what you are trying to achieve. No point styling if you are trying to thicken them, or no point just cutting them back hard if you are trying to style them. I am just letting my grow and then cutting it back... after a few years it might have developed some character and then i can make some decisions then. when they are young there is no real rush for any of this kinda stuff. :)
@@BackGardenBonsai Thank you! They are about 3 to 4 years old, I did not keep records for any of my plants, I am trying to do better now, they all have a woody trunk and yes I do want to thicken them.
Nice work Ian. I murdered most of my citrus in an attempt to kill scale, and repot at the same time. Bad idea. Lol. I have a lemon tree that survived and is growing strong. Cheers 😎🍺🍺
Love your work! Been working on a lemon tree bonsai from a seed for a little over a year now, and since last Fall growth has stopped, and the leaves are pale yellow. Any suggestions on a fertilizer that might bring some life (and color) back into it?
Cheers. mine is actually quite yellow now too. I just use normal fertilser. like standard miracle grow. but you have to be careful its not overwatered or even underwatered. as this can cause yellow leaves in lemons too.
Glad to have discovered you today. I see you have a mars hydro. Do you keep these shohin trees indoors even in the summer? I love your rosemary and I think you've convinced me to try one too. So far I have a ficus kiki and a cotoneaster.
Cheers. yes. anything in my mars hydro tent is tropical-ish, so it gets to enjoy the sun in there. rather than the miserable summers we get here. definitely try a rosemary. they are good fun, not as easy as cotoneaster, but not crazy difficult
Thanks Ian! I'm so glad to have gotten through nearly your whole archive and I love how you deliberately document the plants each month and can show progress. I don't see that a lot in other bonsai channels. Please keep at it! And glad to see your thumb injury wasn't too major and you're as good as new now.
Cheers, the lack of progress always annoys me in other videos. or you see work and then nothing ever again. so i just make what i want to see hahah. im guessing i cant be the only one who likes to see them develop in this way
I'm making a couple tangerine bonsai trees. Yours looks so good and happy, mine the leaves are tacoing a lot, and they just doesn't look super happy but they are growing decently. Are they really heavily nitrogen hungry? Is the soil PH important? Or maybe it's my lower humidity? Hope mine looks as happy as yours at some point
usually if the leaves hold up like that it means they are a little dry, so i would double check on that. As for nitrogen, i dont know. i would say its about the same as any other tree. i certainly dont feed it any more. PH... maybe a little. i do add some ericaceous compost into the mix to help, but i am not sure how much of a difference it makes.
well i leave the tree inside. under the grow light. if i over winter it, it would be in the shed. As for times. i change it quite a lot throughout the year. to basically mimic the natural light pattern

Cheers Sue. its definitely been a pumper this year!!
Was looking forward to this one man! Its mad how much you can chop it back through winter.
Cheers bro :) yeah its been a crazy grower this year

That root ball looks amazing kudos to you!!
cheers :)

cheer haha yeah you probably do! makes me wonder how many things i am doing in the rest of my life and totally forgetting about !
Nice, the roots are looking good so far and grew well after repot. It sure does have alot of thorns for the size of it !
Cheers J, the thorns are so annoying, im forever getting scratched from them!

i'm completely void of melanin! lol but yeah little pot means big abuse hahah its the only way
Beautiful lemon bonsai 😍
Cheers :)
i love this
Cheers :)
I wonder how, I wonder why
Yesterday you told me 'bout the
Blue, blue sky
And all that I can see
Is just a yellow lemon tree 😊😊😊
haha cheers bro :)

@@BackGardenBonsai actually going to get some lemons this year too. 👶✂🌳
Have you got an update on this tree
soon, mid july or so

Why don't you like it? It's s nice tree. With evil thorns 😂
I dont dislike it, i'm more just unhappy that its skinny, tall and straight/uninteresting but maybe with time it can dazzle me with its shape
@@BackGardenBonsai maybe I like it because, here in south Italy, all the lemon trees in the orchard are tall and skinny 😅

Hello, nice work but far from Lemon juice😉
Can you tell us what soil did you use, seems soft and good drained, Thank you🍋🍋🍋
cheers, yes a long way from lemonade! but the soil is equal parts molar clay. perlite and compost.
So I am not the only one who is removing scale with a toothpick! haha
if you are not stabbing them through the heart you are doing it wrong
@@BackGardenBonsai hahaha I have a hard time trying to see what's a scale as it is, stabbing through their heart will take practice!
👍👍👍
Cheers :)

its about equal parts of molar clay, perlite and compost.
How long do you leave your grow light on for? Also where do you leave your tree, outside or inside?

U just spent 7 yrs to grow it 4 inches and the poor tree begged for mercie since u loved slaughtering it every year… 🤷♂️
