I have been growing two lemon bonsai started from seed 3 years ago. Your channel is such an inspiration and one of the best places for those interested in messing around with lemon trees. Thank-you. m, 24, Kansas
HI Nigel, I love your videos. Thank you for the great post! I have a few citrus trees in my collection of plants, and I believe I see a graft point on yours. I believe that you took care of most of the suckers. Good luck with your lemons and please keep the videos coming!!
Hi Nigel! Your videos are always interesting. I am happy to see this video because it gives me some new idea to my own lemon tree. I just want to say thank you for your help also to decide where should I cut my lemon tree first. Keep it up and good luck to these trees also. Can't wait to the next update. Brown.
I have 13 baby lemon trees growing from seed ... they have a loonnnnngggg way to go - but I am very glad I stumbled upon your lemon Bonsai video's - I have enjoyed watching what you have done. Any suggestions for me as to how to achieve bonsai's with these little ones ....
+Shannon CME Hi Shannon, I would just let the trees grow until they get some woody bark on the trunk. After you get to this stage you can begin pruning the trees to get them more compact. Work on your roots every time you re pot also.
In my opinion lowest branches grow from below graft point so you may want to remove them completely so they dont compromise or overpower grafted plant above graft point. Hope you get what Im trying to say :)
+Detlef Römisch Vielen Dank , wir haben eine Menge bewölkten Tagen in letzter Zeit hatten , können im Winter so dunkel und so lang sein. Es macht Frühjahr besonders speziell !
Thanks for posting these great videos! You’ve piqued my interest in growing bonsai. Can any citrus variety be “bonsai-ed” or only dwarf varieties? I’m hoping to take a citrus cutting and grow it as bonsai. I’ve heard dwarf varieties are grafted onto dwarf rootstock; if taking a citrus cutting, it will likely not be dwarf. I’m hoping to apply bonsai principles to keep it small
Hi I have a question. I transplanted a lemon tree , prob like 10 feet tall , like a month ago. The leaves fell down already but tree seems to be alive. Do you know how long is going to take for new leaves to grow back? I live in Northern California. Thank you :)
Yes, the Citrus trees will root easily from cuttings if they are kept warm and humid (greenhouse conditions). You can try propagating the cuttings in the small greenhouse seed trays and keep them in bright light.
Do you ever intentionally rip a branch (smaller branch) off, like down the the trunk, as if the limb was ripped off by a storm. And as it heals, it will create a seam along the trunk and give it interesting texture. Just a thought.
Thanks for another great video Nigel! Amateur question (just started out) ... will cutting a truck to a point where there won't be any branches & leaves actually continue to grow? Will new growth sprout from the cut trunk?
I like to prune and re pot mid summer. The trees have the first half of summer to gain strength and energy, then the second half of summer to recover. Winter here can be dark and the trees stay almost dormant until the days start to get longer in late winter.
+ExtremToxodon The other lemon tree is doing really well, I'm just letting the three new upright trunks get mature enough to do a drastic reduction to them. I think mid summer the time will be right. The trunks are starting to get woody.
I’ve often seen neglected plants at garden centres they don’t seem to know basic care of plants. Usually they are expensive as well. I think it’s all about money with them the6 don’t care about the plants.
It is nice to see a nursery that cares about the plants they sell, we are lucky to have Belgium Nurseries near by, you can tell they are plant people by all the interesting varieties they grow! www.belgian-nursery.com
My lemon tree looks like the third lemon tree, I was curious to know at what point can you give a trunk trimming to it? (The trunk of the tree is only 1/3" but super tall and leggy) Thanks for the videos! I thoroughly enjoy them :)
If the tree is growing strongly, you can cut it back to a stump and it should grow branches from what's left. Be sure to not over water the tree when it has no leaves. The soil will take longer to dry out. Summer is a good time to do this operation. You can seal the cut with a dab of white glue to stop it drying out. As with any operation in bonsai, the results are not guaranteed to work, but without trying you won't get a bonsai! Good luck.
Sonja Peters You can try rooting the top as a cutting, I don't think I've had any luck with them. Air layering the top off might be your best option if you want to save both.
My husband bought a tree for our anniversary. Its an indoor tree. Once we got it home the tree suffered what i assumed to be shock from the sudden freezing temperatur on its way home. The leaves fell off and fruits dropped. Its now at a point where it has started sprouting again. But one half of the "tree canopy" is dead. The branches are dry and has no moisture in them. Im not sure what to do. What can i do to grow new structure? Ps: i know nothing about trees or plants so please help i don't want it to die...
I would let the parts that are growing continue to grow so the tree gains it's health and vigor back. After the tree has recovered, the dead parts can be trimmed away. You will have to clip and grow the top to slowly get it back to the shape you desire. It may take several years.
+Vijay Sawant Hi Vijay, the new shoots will be allowed to grow until they start to get woody, then they will be cut back again. I counted the rings on the largest tree it appears to be 14 years old.
thx for the update man , I am actually was just gonna start after the this video can you help with some good hints ? pleas , note:me lemon is 1 month old
+Nigel Saunders that's alright! I have started a few citrus seedlings from seed and I'm growing them slowly :) I'm really excited. I'm also attempting to no say a curly willow and a few other things. Your videos have really helped me a lot! Your videos have inspired me to make a temple out of concrete (I'm going to make little bricks but I'm going to make the form out of Legos.) and make bonsai pots. Hopefully i will be able to have all sorts of bonsais. I started my 1st citron seed when I was 17 so it's about a year and a half old now. I just want to try all sorts of things
+Nik Hasangjekaj The tree must be first cut heavily to get the basic structure in order. After the first major styling, pruning gets less severe. This type of work is done before the tree is called a pre-bonsai. Most pre-bonsai trees have had a major prune some time in their life.
This is the one I needed to watch, have a large tree similar that I want to chop. Thanks for the instruction.
IMHO the tree before pruning looked even beautiful :)

Thanks Charles, I hoping to get the lemon tree to actually start looking like a tree soon!
Love to see again this lemon bonsai

Hey I'm a newer grower and the video helped with topping/bonsai info, thanks
Thanks I M O Y!
great videos Nigel! you're helping me understand how to bonsai.
Thank you for responding. Just got 3 citrus trees . Will follow instructions. Again thank you .
Best of luck with them Ken!

Good tidy up, look forward to updates of these trees.
Great work. I recently got a tangerine tree and it has a very similar trunk so this video is a good inspiration. Thanks for that.
Thank You Sir! Been planning on getting a citrus tree soon this video came right on time. Salute!
I would love to see some more of your lemon bonsai videos! I have a lemon tree too and i love watching your videos :-)
The Lemon trees are almost dormant here in the winter, I'll be sure to update them all in spring!
The curve is the graft I think and under that are the suckers so needed to come off
Thanks Izzy!
Now I know what to (attempt to) do with the lemon tree a friend grew for me from seed!
They can make really nice bonsai as they get older!

Thank you for a big smile!
My pleasure!

I know it's kinda randomly asking but does anybody know a good website to stream new tv shows online?
im excited for this project.
Thank you for the great post
You are very welcome, thanks!
A good start!
Question? I have a 3year old lemon bonsai. If I prune all the leaves and trim down the branches will the tree survive?
Thanks for posting these great videos! You’ve piqued my interest in growing bonsai. Can any citrus variety be “bonsai-ed” or only dwarf varieties? laughingc0w Non-dwarfs should grow faster; that will be better for producing a 'finished' product in your lifetime.
thanks
Love watching your videos! But maybe a little too harsh a pruner you are :) All the best.

Learned so much just from this one video. Curious though. Can you regrow the branches you cut off? Will they root if you stick them in water or soil?

I have done that on my one Cedar, it does give a nice natural look!
How are theses going now? maybe an update sometime soon?
Thanks for another great video Nigel!
Amateur question (just started out) ... will cutting a truck to a point where there won't be any branches & leaves actually continue to grow? Will new growth sprout from the cut trunk?
+Peter Willis Yes if the tree is healthy, cutting back into old wood will stimulate back budding. The tree will be fine.
+Nigel Saunders Awesome! Thanks a bunch. Time to get the saw out and go psycho on my unsuspecting ficus!
+Peter Willbert How did it go Peter? Any new growth yet? What type of Ficus is it? Is it Ficus Benjamina?
Nigel. When is the best time to cut back and repot them ? I know the weather different in Canada and California. Thank you .
I like to prune and re pot mid summer. The trees have the first half of summer to gain strength and energy, then the second half of summer to recover. Winter here can be dark and the trees stay almost dormant until the days start to get longer in late winter.

Nigel Saunders Could I make a cutting out of the remaining plant? Does that have a good success rate if the main plant fails to grow?
Sonja Peters You can try rooting the top as a cutting, I don't think I've had any luck with them. Air layering the top off might be your best option if you want to save both.
Nigel Saunders Thanks So Very Much!! I can't wait to give it a go! :D

Update?!?!?
It will be coming, I have a few more videos to make before I get to the Lemon trees. Sorry, it's been a while!

Martinaj kodra If you want the tree to look its best, you have to be willing to sacrifice the moment to improve what it will become in the future.
Lol basically cut that tree down.
