    Dear Nigel,
    As usual you are different. Always I learn something new. Don't have enough words to thank you. Keep posting. As I am from India, would live to see few more videos on Ficus species. If possible.

    Thank you for posting this video. It inspired me (and gave me the courage) to try bonsai for some young citrus trees I had planted in my yard. These three year old plants have never done well here due to poor soil conditions. So, I figured "what the heck" and dug them up, trunk chopped them well above the graft point and put them in bonsai training pots. When I looked yesterday I noticed that a Meyer Lemon had started to sprout. All I could think was "I'm so glad I watched that video!" Now I'm hopeful that the others will likewise sprout and get a renewed life as a bonsai citrus.

    Enjoyed your presentation of your lemon trees. I have a lemon tree that is 8 months old. The roots are coming out the bottom of the pot. I water it by putting the water in the dish below and it takes the water as needed. It's in a west facing window, and is doing real well. Thanks for your great videos, enjoy watching them a lot. :))

    Hi Nigel, the lemon trees don't look like they've suffered any ill effects from the re-potting. I have three lemon trees putting out some new growth and one is putting out sone blossoms. We are in late spring here in Oz, after a very cold spell, some beautiful days starting now, ranging from 28-34 C this week, so I'm hoping for some strong growth. Keep the videos coming! Cheers, Mandie

    Hi, Nigel. I'm a student journalist from Scotland who's bonsai experiences consist only of managing to germinate a mountain pine seed and almost killing a ficus. Haven't lost enthusiasm though. Currently I'm thinking about writing a feature on bonsai, focusing specifically around what you do on RUclips.
    If there's anyway I can contact you for a chat and a quick set of questions I would be really gratefull.
    Thanks,
    Manuel

    Do most people cut off thorns? I think the thorns are beautiful, but they can get out of control and in the way a lot. I am thinking of only leaving a few choice ones, like beauty marks.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 лет назад +1

      Sounds like a good idea. I was pruning my lemon tree outside once and I stepped on a piece I had cut off. The long needle went right through my shoe and dug deeply into my foot. I had to pull it out. Since that day, my love for the thorns has diminished!

    When's the next update Nigel?! I recently acquired a little lemon tree so I'm trying to learn as much as I can from your lemon tree videos about what I might be in store for. I've only recently started properly taking care of the three ficus bonsai at my house (had them for nearly ten years untended...), so this lemon tree will be my first bonsai that I have created myself. Any quick tips pertinent to lemon trees?
    Thanks for these videos, definitely motivated me to give my bonsai some care and attention.

      I'll be sure to update them all this spring. They are starting to grow again as the sun gets stronger and will need pruning!

  • @sarrakitty

    That small one in a semicascade is about the size of the biggest of my two lemons, maybe a little smaller. It looks like it will be nice as it grows! My own isn't at all right for a semicascade style like that. It's more of an upright tree. I want to do a little video of my own on the tree when i get around to pruning it, but should i wait for the spring? (I'm in zone 7A, climate wise)

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 лет назад

      If you have good conditions you can prune it back anytime. The tree needs lots of sun and warmth so if it is in a sunny window, it should do well. I usually wait until the end of January, the sun gets stronger and the days get longer. My trees start to wake up from the dark days of winter and they grow really well in February.

    Nigel, I am enjoying your videos very much. So, thank you!
    I am a beginner and I want to ask why you decided to put the trees into bonsai pots as opposed to keeping them in bigger nursery pots. From what I have gathered so far, it seems that a lot of bonsai practitioners try to develop the trunk first and quickly by allowing the tree roots more room to grow into. Please clarify.
    Thank you, sir!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 лет назад

      I like to control the growth and shape of the roots, just like I control the growth and shape of the top of the tree. A larger pot allows you to grow the tree in the pot for longer between root pruning. Rapid growth gives you coarse branching up top and also a coarse root system below. Growing the tree slowly and carefully will get you a really nice miniature bonsai in the future. It takes longer, but I find the process more satisfying. I have no time frame to develop my trees, I just like the bonsai process and creating a nice tree for the future.

    Beautiful tree Nigel. How old is this particular one? I've read that lemons stay in the juvenile state for quite some time before they actually develop a thick trunk. Is this true?
    My grandmother planted a lemon a few months ago and its trunk isn't looking like it would woody anytime soon.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 лет назад

      A new seedling will slowly develop bark within a few years. I would guess that this tree is between 15 to 30 years old?

    Sir I am a beginner and I am very much inspired by your bonsai videos. I request to tell me little about your bonsai soil. Thanks

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 лет назад

      The soil I use is perlite and turface mixed 50/50. To this I add 10 to 20 percent composted pine bark. All the materials are sifted to get a finished particle size of 3 to 4 mm.Trees in this soil need to be watered and fertilized carefully.

    Good day! If you have got a couple of minutes pleases give me a word of advise, I've been training a young orange tree for just over a year, and in past 6 months it didn't show any new growth, I have recently repotted it and pruned quite a lot of roots similar to how you show it, it has now been about two weeks and the leaves started to go slightly yellow, and I'm worried. Any idea what I can do?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 лет назад

      You can just keep the tree warm and humid and in good light. My citrus trees often go dormant for most of the winter, they are just waking up now and beginning to grow. Just keep it insect free and hopefully it will begin to grow again.

    • @alexanderkipnis5542
      @alexanderkipnis5542 7 лет назад

      Nigel Saunders thanks! I live in a hot country so the tree never is actually exposed to temperatures below 15c, would the season effect the growth even without temperature being too cold? By the way thanks a lot for making your videos they are so informative and actually you inspired me to get into bonsai! Keep it up and I hope your garden thrives!

    Nigel,
    I couldn't pass up the deal for a lemon tree about the size of the biggest of the three trees you have before pruning. It looks like most of it has flowered and it's beginning to possibly produce fruit. I noticed in your previous video that you kept it in the nursery bucket until later after pruning it. Is that important? Should I wait to pot it or prune it or both? I live in Virginia and we are still having freezing temps and I plan on keeping it inside to protect it. Any advice would be helpful.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 лет назад

      If the tree has lots of stored energy in the roots and trunk, it should be fine to re pot and prune the top at the same time. I pruned the top down first, just to fit the large trees in my plant room for the winter. The trees tend to grow in spurts. They grow really fast, then sit dormant for a while, then they start to grow really quickly again. It is best to re pot and root prune, just before one of these growth spurts as the tree will have lots of stored energy to recover.
