Wow , you are one smart guy . I used to work as a mechanic back in the seventys . But if you showed me that wiring harness and said Hook it up ! I would have screamed and ran out of the building .
Haha thanks. It's really not too terrible on an old, bare bones truck like this. There's only a few connections you could hook up wrong and they'd be easy to figure out if you did. The worst part was prying all those 30 year old plastic connectors apart by hand!
@@AlwaysBored123 nope. You got to paint all bare steel. With any good oil based paint if you want to go budget. Epoxy is good of course. Just then you have to do tonnes more prep. Crappy old enamel paints are damn good coatings. Thin it plenty and paint over everything you wanna cover. Give it a couple more coats thinned as reqd. after it dries for a week. A barrier to airborne moisture and you'll have problems, covered with corrosion. You have done a good job of that.
Excellent job on the cab swap, rust repair, and modifications, just curious why you didn’t replace the starter and ring gear while you had the access to them. Also love the old dodge truck would like to see more details on it. I love to see the younger generation fixing instead of replacing, excellent job young man keep it up new subscriber here.
Just laziness I guess. I wish I had replaced it while I had the cab off but I decided I had enough on my plate and wanted to get it back together. Might need to make a video on the Dodge it's been a good truck. Thanks for watching!
Although people say the Detroits aren't good engines they have lasted thos long and most are still kicking today. The truck i run now has the new Detroit in it and i tell you what that thing cant be stopped. It out powers and out pulls the other truck i drive which has the Cummins in it. In the end i like the video and i would love to get a single axle dump truck. I use to run tri-axles with the Allison transmission and the Cummins in it which was way under powered for what we hauled.
Thanks for this video. I drove a similar truck in the late 80's , flatbed, not a dump, pulling a trailer w/ backhoe or skid steer. Good engines , don't know about the automatic, mine was a 5 speed with a splitter if I remember correctly. Plan on a bumpy ride , your truck has a short wheelbase

Alls well that ends well Ae? The cab seems a bit odd up that high which is noticeable. It only matters if you are full and driving down a rough track causing the box to batter the roof? You made a better truck of the two though. The worst thing about it is you become the standing professional when you get so in depth. Means mechanics will to take least as long as you have spent already to understand what problems that could arise. Most of them haven't worked on one for ten or twenty years.
Yeah it does look a little strange sitting up so high but oh well. Hopefully the frame won't flex enough to let the box touch the cab I actually didn't think about that. I work on all my own stuff so I'm not worried about other mechanics getting confused lol.
@@AlwaysBored123 you can switch out the trans tunnel if you feel it would be better at a later time anyway. I have a base bent 8 like that and those problems are the same. They're based on the Cummins. Better for constant rpm like generators boats those sort of applications. Many were in trucks hough I hear the liners commonly split and those crank bearings burn up.
No. Those types of coatings are expensive, difficult to apply correctly, and unnecessary imo. The first cab rusted out due to road salt, and the second one got rusty because someone used old house carpet as a floor mat which trapped water against it. They don't salt the roads here so I think it will be fine how it is.
The vins's follow the cabs. That's actually a big part of why I swapped them. The original was rusted out and didn't have a title. The donor cab solved both those issues.
My state doesn't put the mileage on the title. Or at least they didn't for any of the old cars I've ever owned. I think I did end up swapping the gauge clusters anyway though for a different issue.

Great job. I would definitely paint the underside of the cab with galvanizing paint or rustolium so that it doesn’t end up like the old cab

Those old Ford/New Holland 6.6 and 7.8's are apparently pretty unstoppable.

. The bottom of the Steering wheel is pointing straight up. If I compared to some of my F3 fifties I have that have the same Steering wheel.
The wheel on this is bigger than on any pickups I've seen.

Why not use rust converter paint while it was apart? Cost?
I just didn't consider it necessary. The frame had very little rust on it and they don't salt the roads here so I don't expect it to get any worse.
Also thought you would have splashed some paint and under seal when it was stripped down.

It probably would have but the rusted truck had a better engine, transmission, and suspension so I elected to swap the cabs.
