    I work in a light duty diesel shop, and specialize in Powerstroke engines. I’d replace the IPR and ICP as soon as possible. Only use Ford sensors, aftermarket tend to not work or go bad fast. Flush the entire cooling system with water with engine running until it runs clear. Then fill it with the purple Heavy Duty coolant from Napa. That 7.3 PSD will last longer than you expect with proper maintenance. Oil every 5k and fuel filters every 10k and it’ll be fine

      I doubt that black sludge they called oil was helping anything either. I'd never start an unknown engine that sat for years without pulling the oil plug more than likely water or worse coolant sitting in the bottom of the oil pan.
      I agree on the sensors, the HPOP could be getting weak too, tow trucks do tend to sit and idle alot too so god only knows the hours on the engines.
      Peak Final Charge is good stuff as is CAT ELC is as well. The 7.3L Powerstroke and the 7.3L IDI are both engines know for cavitation gotta keep your additives up.
      I didnt notice any obvious skip while they were cranking the Powerstroke, good chance the Powerstroke has some life left in it.

    That little box reading the rpms is a factory high idle, you simply push the arrow up button to set it higher when using the PTO. Also, when bleeding brakes, there is a small module if it has ABS that needs to be bled on the drivers frame rail. If you drain the system air gets trapped here and gives you a spongy pedal. When you change the oil, use good quality rotella 15w40 with a motorcraft filter and add one quart of Archoil 9100. Itlle free those injectors right up from sitting. 👍

    Extended crank like that at the end could be a cam sensor flaking out (heard it hiccup a couple times running too), worn injectors, lift pump dying, or even a tired HPOP.
    If you can get a computer on it, monitor your ICP pressure while cranking- if it isn't going above 500 until it lights then you are fighting building pressure.
    Damn solid engines if you know what their weak spots are.

    I've done revivals on both power stroke and idi. Never really much to it. Biggest thing with these is undoing all of the hackwork other people have done in the past, and because these things are so robust people tend to neglect maintenance on them. My personal 95 7.3 f350 cclb 4x4 has about 10 grand worth of engine work done to it, king ranch interior, sound system and a dually swap. It is a absolute hoss. 310,000 miles and still puts in work. Best truck I ever had.

  • @tcmonster
    @tcmonster 3 года назад +31

    Biggest things about diesels taking a while to start is because of air in the fuel. Check all seals from the filter to the pump aren't sucking air. The pump itself is made up of many O rings that will have dried up sitting for 5 years without fuel to lubricate it. At this rate you should replace the fuel pump or try replace the easily accessible O rings

    • @keepontruckinman4688
      @keepontruckinman4688 3 года назад

      I have a 02 mack Vision oil pump went out replaced it now I'm not getting oil pressure truck runs fine I did order a oil pressure sensor hasn't got here yet. Any idea what it could be sir? Thanks for your help much appreciated

    • @gr8guitarplayer
      @gr8guitarplayer 3 года назад

      And not only that, those O-rings were designed prior to ULSD, which wears them out, so eventually they all should be replaced. And THAT'S when you'll really have to deal with purging the air to get it started. Worn injectors also cause hard starts, especially after sitting and high mileage. The injector has a clearance of .004" which high pressure oil needs to flow through in order for it to fire, and that clearance gets smaller with wear, usually caused by extended miles btw oil changes.

My Boss actually took the Truck to one of the Local Diesel Shops. And put a Chip in it hoping to save Fuel Mileage. It had a 5spd Manual Trans with a 4.10 Rear End and it was 4×4. It never got good Mileage but would blow the black Smoke after the Chip lol. I loved that old Truck it was Fire Engine Red. In regards to your question, It has a lift pump in the valley that pulls diesel from the tank, its fwd towards front of engine/under the turbo. Injectors are fired from a HPOP. Your start issue could be just air in the lines still, or bad fuel still in the lines, would need to be driven to clear it all out, or the unfortunate part the hpop is bad you'd need to see your hpop psi while cranking, or your IPR % while cranking, being its low miled it probably isn't the hpop but anything possible, sometimes just changing the oil really smooths the start process out. I have owned tons of 7.3s and none have started that long under normal circumstances.

    So on the hard starting I'm sure you are getting air in the fuel somewhere and the extended cranking is the mechanical fuel pump trying to expel said air... I'm sure some will argue but a 95 powerstroke had a mechanical fuel pump right behind the filter bowl, I think they went electric in 1998 or 99. Also the powerstroke having the oil operated injectors is very sensitive to the cleanliness of the oil and filter so a service may make it easier to start and if it ever gets more than a gallon low of oil it will not run because the high pressure pump wont build enough pressure to fire the injectors. Also when you replace the glow plugs be warned they are under the valve covers and the wires for the injectors and glow plugs all feed through the gasket surface so make sure you get the gaskets that include the harnesses and pigtails to save yourself some trouble and replace all the glow plugs at the same time with motorcraft ONLY if you cheap out and use autolites the next time you'll be pulling the heads to change them, ask me how I know.

      @@dustintunis9347 Yeah, right now, it's basically an F250 with a heavy bed on the back, due to it having only four tires.

      @daniel bean - No need to get snippy. It may have been a bit of an overgeneralization, but with only 2 rear tires they would most likely be overloaded, which is bad enough with know GOOD tires (obviously these aren't). Also SRW 1 ton trucks have a lower rear axle weight rating than duallies.

      @daniel bean sweetie please learn to keep that mouth shut before it gets you in some trouble one day.
      But to reply to your childish temper tantrum I own a 01 GMC 3500hd the old body style with a Cummins it's a factory wrecker I also own a 08 f350 srw with a 6.4 a 97 ram 3500 hd cummins and several others so yes I have seen the underside of a 3/4 ton vs a 1 ton.

      They are great trucks and kind of hard to find these days. I have a 97 w/ a 460. The worst part on this truck is the parking brake. they use a ZF unit that is mounts to the transmission. They are a pain to rebuild and have to be completely removed and disassembled to do the simplest fix. If you break a 5 dollar spring, it could cost you 600 to 1000 bucks to get it fixed and most states require parking brake to pass inspection. If you do run into this problem, and as long as they have been sitting I'm sure you will, there is an outfit in Texas that sells complete modernized units at half the cost of OEM ....If you can still find one from Ford. Good luck Diggs

    To revive your jack, replace the seals and the fluid. Always keep the jack in full down position when not in use. Hope that helps your future endeavors. ;)
