  • @boblamb8421

    Great video. When I retired in 2006 I started scrapping in Mesa Az. Prices were good so it worked out well. I used a 16 foot flat car trailer with a winch and a 1 ton crew cab dually that gets maybe 6 miles to the gallon. My loads from the appliance place would average 4000 pounds. Prices here are so low had it not been for the big loads I would not have even broke even. At one point shred was at 2 cents a pound. That was around the time people called me like crazy but they go up and down daily here and not just a cent but copper will drop 25 cents I continued to scrap until the main place I obtained it all from ( a scratch & dent store that moved 10 miles farther away ) and began charging for their scrap. At 3 cents a pound it was not worth it barely covering expenses. Now the yard a few miles away won't take refrigerator's with freon in them any longer. He will without freon but I'm not setting myself up for an EPA issue. I will still haul scrap if I can get it but unlike the old days when I just had a Craigslist ad where people would call and give me truck loads of scrap metal it is none existent any longer. No one calls and there is really nothing to have and no one puts anything on the curb. I suspect people are selling it themselves given the crappy economy. Keep up the good work.

    • @AlwaysBored123
      @AlwaysBored123  Год назад +2

      Wow those are some rough prices. I agree it's hard to justify any effort at all for 3 cents a pound. Imo unless you own a scrapyard there is far more money to be made in non-ferrous scrap than in iron and steel. Particularly in extracting copper from electrical and HVAC scrap. I think I made as much, if not more, on just the ac units as I did on all the steel I hauled in this video. The downside of course is if you want non-ferrous stuff in decent quantities you will have to pay something for it. It's worth it though.

    Something I’ve used to demount smaller tires and wheels is my hydraulic wood splitter. I just place them on the beam like I’m splitting wood and use the ram to crush the wheel then rotate and crush every 90 degrees. After your done the wheel will look like a 4 leaf clover and the tire will slide off easily. Good job processing all that scrap.

    Recycling is a very important issue. Have you seen a de-production line for cars? .. cars are stripped on a line and seperated and the company in the Uk makes millions of cash either as scrap or re-use ! Its a huge industry across here in europe. Sweden for example actually export due to the fact they have too much ! -------------- Your doing a great Job.

    • @AlwaysBored123
      @AlwaysBored123  Год назад +2

      No I've never heard of that. Here we just dump them into an enormous hammer mill that pulverizes them into little sortable bits. Although there are lots of used auto part junkyards around here too so most junk cars get picked pretty clean first.

    So what was the approximate time ? Fuel costs ? And was your time worth , in other words about how much did you make for your effort in scrap so far ?
    That's the main reason I watched the whole video !

    • @AlwaysBored123
      @AlwaysBored123  Год назад +1

      About 10 days for the clean out then about 9 months to scrap and sell everything IIRC. Idk on fuel costs I didn't keep track. I think it was worth it but I'm not real eager to do it again.

  • @adman6380
    @adman6380 Год назад +2

    Just curious I assume it was all worth it for the time, fuel, effort etc in the end if you calculated what dollar value per hour overall, as in your wage versus what you might make in other lines of work

    • @AlwaysBored123
      @AlwaysBored123  Год назад +1

      Lol I didn't go anywhere near that in depth on it. My gross wage ended up being about $6500. I have no clue how many hours I had in it but I'm confident I would have made more working nearly any job for the same amount of time. This was done primarily to prevent all that stuff from going to waste. Profit wasn't the top priority.

    You can simply mount that wire stripper sideways in a Craigslist drill press. Just set the pulleys on the lowest setting. Also put a short piece of wood under it and the table to force it up a bit because the chuck is probably held in with a taper fitting.
    Oh....and the interesting thing is how low amperage a lot of small drill presses are. Sometimes 2.5 amps. So you might have to get one with more horsepower. It's surprising how much torque is needed to put that cutting wheel through plastic wire insulation.

      That's a clever idea thanks. I was trying to think of a good way to attach a small motor to it. They do sell them like that but they're crazy expensive.
