I feel like having Ganon as a concept is fine. We have lore of reincarnations of Link, Zelda, and Demise, but like, you can make every Ganon/Ganondorf (or other Demise-reincarnation if they wanted it) unique unlike say, Bowser in Mario, who's tied down to being a specific character. On top of that, we could always pull a Termina or New Hyrule and just have a game take place in a new place or a Minish Cap and have essentially a side-story in between reincarnations.
So yeah, I don't think Ganon necessarily has to become a tired concept because Nintendo can put in different villains between reincarnations, and they can change up what the particular reincarnation is like. For instance, although not all reincarnations, think about how many different Links there are and how different they are from each other. There's commonalities between the versions to serve the games' needs, but they're all mostly unique in some way.
All three main characters, Link, Zelda, and Demise, are TEMPLATES for characters, not necessarily the characters themselves, and Nintendo doesn't need to get rid of templates, they just need to apply variety when using them.

On one side it's the original intention - Shigeru Miyamoto sees game characters as actors or cartoon characters where in one story they're in an epic tale and in the next they're racing karts together. This allows for different gameplays and scenarios and avoids the hassle of a timeline without having to eventually ditch villains. This works well for Mario for example.
Zelda didn't have an official timeline up until the game began to have a heavier lore, referencing previous things, causing fans to start to try and connect the dots until Eiji Aonuma said "aight here you go" and "canonized a timeline". BOTW was set so sooo far in the future to avoid these problems. The official site just says "feck it all timelines lead to this" even if it doesn't make full sense in all of them. It's a soft reboot of sorts to return to the old formula without having to erase or retcon a lore - something that would upset a lot of the fans.
That said, you're right - just like a fan that loves the timeline is right aswell. Hence the official Hyrule historia on the timeline itself establishes that Eiji Aonuma wants you, the player, to in the end interpret the story as your imagination sees fit.

I'd love to see a LoZ storyline where Link, Zelda and Ganondorf all grow up together, being friends and genuinely being a triforce united but have some great tragedy cause a divide and hatred to stir inside Ganondorf. Having him turn on his friends, attempt to destroy them or take the triforce for himself out of hatred and malice might be a fun story.

  • @legacytag
    @legacytag 2 года назад +65

There's a headcanon going around that I've loved, that the Malice energy and version of Ganon that we fight was actually the curse of Demise given physical form, a form slain by the Hero of the Wilds. With the BoTW 2 trailer showing Ganondorf I saw theories regarding that as being Ganondorf *without* the Curse of Demise, sighting the potential of him being a lot weaker but also not having the same drive and hatred toward the goddess and the hero. While not a good guy he's be much more tame and thoughtful, reflecting on his history.

Even if BotW 2’s plot revolves around breaking Demise’s curse, that wouldn’t mean that there would be no more Ganon. If Nintendo wanted to have Ganon as the main antagonist again, they would just have to set any new games chronologically before the curse was broken.
I had always thought it was strange that BotW takes place so long after the other games, but with the sequel in mind it makes so much more sense. Because BotW happens so long after everything else, it makes having games take place chronologically before it much easier. I would actually bet that this is evidence that BotW 2 will be about breaking Demise’s curse, seeing how the setting gives the developers the freedom to do something that drastic.

True! The reason why the iterarions of Zelda, Link, Ganon, and even Impa have worked so well for years is because, while they sometimes retain some personality characteristics that tie them, each version is their own person. That's why I haven't grown tired of them. They may have similar looks and the same names, but each of their realities makes them unique characters.

Here's my take: I think we should continue seeing Ganon incarnations in the series going forward, BUT I think we should be done w/ the specific Ganondorf that had his origin in OoT. That version of the character's had a well written climax to his arc in both WW & TP, as well as a good enough one in the downfall timeline. Let's continue having Ganon but do w/ him what we already do w/ Link & Zelda: have a new incarnation of the him w/ different a backstory & changes to personality between incarnations.
That's part of the fun of getting a new Zelda & Link! Seeing how they're different from their previous versions & what each game wants to try this time w/ them. If we can get the cowardly to brave Spirit Tracks Zelda; childhood romance girl next door SS Zelda, & the genius Princess struggling w/ he destiny BotW Zelda, why not the same for Ganon? How cool would it be to see a Ganon who knew Link from a young age? A more sympathetic version who hates his curse alongside everything else? Or heck, what if one game gives us a Ganon who's YOUNGER than that games Zelda & Link.
You have a reincarnating character. The sky's the limit! :)

Dude that sounds so fun! Maybe have a game where Link's an old man pulled out of retirement because this newly crowned young Gerudo chief who thinks his shit doesn't stink is picking a fight with other world leaders.
Went that way because a young adult Link hunting down a child Ganondorf would be difficult to pull off without offending a lot of people lol.
Continuing with the previous idea: part of the mainline string of quests would be finding and training someone to take your place because Link's an old man and youth and enthusiasm will eventually wear down age and treachery lol.

We need Ganondorf as much as we need the Triforce. I don't know if it's possible to permanently remove him after his appearance has influenced so much of the franchise. Heck I don't even think we would've gotten the Gerudo tribe and their "male born every 100 years" backstory lore without Ganondorf being the key focus and even the origin of that is still a mystery.

  • @UnholyTriforceDelenn

I don't think every game needs to feature Ganon/Ganondorf, but when we do see him, it would be nice to see him changed up a little bit. Not to the point where he's unrecognizable, but like maybe different armor, more detail in variation when it comes to the "pig form" of Ganon, that kind of thing. Enough that he stands out a lot more in comparison to previous games.
Also, in games where it is the same Ganondorf/Ganon as a previous game, it would be interesting to see an attack or two that is highly reminiscent of an attack he does in that prior game which is countered in the same manner as that game, so you feel as if you're continuing a fight that you'd fought long ago, but with new attacks that come along with it to really spice it up.

One of my favorite parts about Skyward Sword is that with Zelda and Link being 2/3, the only person left to fill the third role is Groose, and the idea that Groose is a window into a Ganondorf that could have existed without the curse of Demise.
Personally, I'd also be really hyped for a spinoff or sequel that twists the formula to the left or right, giving us a Heroic Ganondorf trying to save Link from an evil Zelda or a Heroic Zelda trying to save Ganondorf from a corrupted Link. At this point, I'm a little tired of always seeing Power=Evil when the 3 parts of the triforce are supposed to be equal.

Wart is pretty much the Freddy Kruger of the Nintendo multiverse) and Tatanga (he was the main villain alien invader in Super Mario Land and the second to the last boss of Super Mario Land 2 and was the main villain on many of the early 90's Mario comics when Bowser and Wart weren't used). Would be nice to see Wart and Tatanga and the final enemy from Link's Awakening used in future Mario and Zelda games (since it adds to both games rogues galleries. Varied rogues galleries are important. The Batman franchise is an example of this), but save Bowser and Ganon for a surprise return in much later future Mario and Zelda games so when they do show up, their appearances feel more important (kind of like when Joker shows up in a Batman comic whenever the other villains like Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, etc, aren't being used).

I honestly adore the cyclical nature of Zelda. There's something fascinating about these three archetypes--the princess, the villain, and the hero--eternally circling each other, finding their way back into the world, only to be resolved and recycled once again. However, if they were to take a break from Ganon for a game or two, I wouldn't mind. But I doubt they'd ever abandon him entirely. It would still be interesting to see the evil of Demise return in other forms.
One storyline I think would be interesting is if the triad each learned of the cycle they're trapped in. Would they try to break the cycle? Would they see it as inevitable and accept their roles? I also think it would be interesting to see Ganon and Demise exist in the same space. Perhaps Ganon learns of his origins and seeks to resurrect Demise properly. Would they cooperate, or would they betray each other? Can they even exist at the same time?

Given that the series hasn’t been released in chronological order, even if BotW2 is Ganon’s swan song in the timeline, there’s no reason it has to be his swan song from the series, so Nintendo can easily go back and revisit earlier periods with him as the villain of that entry in the series. And given the whole reincarnation cycle nature of the series, they could easily introduce new takes on him without overly conflicting by simply having each be a different incarnation and could even use it to explore fresh ideas with him.
For example, one idea I’ve had for a Zelda game would be have Ganondorf start it as a good guy and as Link’s best friend, then over the course of the game have him corrupted by his destiny as the reincarnation of evil. This could even do something I don’t think a Zelda game has done before and have a branching storyline - have Ganondorf’s fate be influenced by the player’s actions throughout the game with alternate paths where he falls to evil and becomes the main villain or is saved by Link and remains on the side of good.
Another idea I’ve had is for a game where he burns out on evil. When the game begins he’s already conquered Hyrule, but it’s been so long that people have forgotten he has and misattribute the state of Hyrule to the King having become evil and corrupt. Throughout the game Link, who comes from the borderlands where things are fairly normal travels through Hyrule towards Hyrule Castle, and as he does so the land becomes more stagnant and withered. When Link arrives at the castle he finds an old wizened Ganondorf on the throne and it’s revealed the reason Hyrule is in the state it is is because Ganondorf grew bored and tired with being victorious and the land having become empathically linked to him has also burned out vitalitywise. Fighting Link revitalises him and when Link defeats him Ganondorf thanks him and dies happy because in doing so Link has saved him from his own victory.
Lastly a third idea I’ve had involving Ganondorf would be to have a game where it’s incarnations of Ganondorf and Link are half brothers; they’re both the sons of the Gerudo King who was the previous once in a century male Gerudo with Ganondorf as the elder brother. The game would be set at a time where tensions between the Gerudo and Hyrule are high and when Link is a small kid and Ganondorf is in his early teens, Link gets captured in a Hylian raid. Cut to ten-fifteen years later and Link has been raised in Hyrule due to being half-Hylian on his mother’s side, when Ganondorf who is now King attacks Hyrule seeking vengeance for the brother he thinks is dead, with a theme of the game being how his love for his brother has been corrupted and lead to him being the latest incarnation of evil.
That’s just a few ideas I’ve had with what could be done with him, and I’m sure in Nintendo’s hands many more concepts could be done too, so overall I’m going to say, no he shouldn’t bow out of the series after BotW2. That being said, I think it would be nice if he’s not brought back every game; spread his appearances out by interspersing other villains in between. And doing so you don’t even have to lose the connection to Ganondorf/Ganon; have some of those villains be stand alone villains, but have others be acting on his behalf. And it doesn’t have to be the cliche they’ve pulled a few times where the new guy is set up to be the game’s main villain, only for Ganon(dorf) to be revealed to be behind them all along and be the real final boss. They could make it more like Zelda 2 where it’s his followers acting on their own, or even have him be the greater scope villain, but not actually appear in that game (save his actual appearance to its sequel where he takes centre stage early on), just be a nebulous power backing the main villain (whether said villain is his actual subordinate or another villain he’s manipulated to further his own plans which aren’t to be fulfilled until much later).

What you ask is not possible and was already explained in Skyward Sword.
Ganon is the physical manifestation of Demise's hatred. Demise is a demon god that was always evil and invaded Hyrule shortly after the golden goddesses left as he wanted the Triforce. Whats not explained is what happened to Fi & Ghirahim.
Supposedly, Fi went quiet while using all of it's energy to keep Demise trapped for all eternity though I feel like this is a cop out answer to explain why Fi is not in any other games when they didn't even think of the Master Sword as a spirit weapon at the time.
As for Ghirahim no one knows what happened to it. It was a one-off spirit sword/villain unless it was actually Ghirahim that was turned into Gannondorf rather than Demise's hatred.
Here's another though: Since the Master's Sword was badly damaged, that means potential for Demise to break free.

The pieces are all there. Ganon being a reincarnation could make him anybody, and he's not guaranteed to become evil right away in life.

The same way that Skyward sword was created as the beginning of the tale, I could see BotW2 being made as the "end" of the stories, the point where Delmise's curse is broken and the three main characters end their reincarnations. That being said, there is plenty of room in the timeline for even more stories, be it with Ganon/Ganondorf or other villains.

That depends on where in the timeline the next games end up and what the stories will be about.
"Should the Zelda series retire Ganon as the series main antagonist?"
That's rather ridiculous considering how iconic Ganon(dorf) is. Not to mention that he's the physical embodiment of Demise's curse that was meant to forever haunt the blood of the goddess (Zelda/Hylia) and the Spirit of the Hero (Link)
For Ganon(dorf) to no longer be the big bad from here on, the games would have to retire Zelda and Link as well and thus remove chief cores of what makes a Zelda game into a Zelda game.

8:10 you say he “obtained” the Triforce of Power. This IS the OoT Gannondorf, keep in mind. When Link is sent back, he is in the Sword chamber before his journey really starts. The way I saw it, there was only one way Link could prove who he was to the royal family (except, ya know… Zelda’s Lullabye). Since he was the Link who pulled the sword, I always assumed the triforce split when he went back in time, and Link summoned the Triforce of Courage to convince the King that he was telling the truth. And if Link had the Triforce of Courage, then Gannondorf and Zelda would also have THEIR Triforce pieces. They just didn’t know this right away. So when Gannondorf died, he was just manifesting the Triforce piece he already had thanks to Future Link and Future Zelda. Which explains why Zelda (TP) would also already have it. She inherited the Triforce, just like she inherited her role in the legend from Zelda (OoT).
It just made sense to me. They already had their Triforce pieces, Link and Zelda (TP) just inherited theirs through blood. I mean, you see Link’s Triforce piece manifest for the first time when he turns into a wolf. When Gannondorf failed to die, he also started to look more beastly!!! Both manifested their Triforce pieces in similar ways! And for all we know, Zelda didn’t know she had HER Triforce until the Twilight fell over Hyrule.
Sorry for the tangent. It just makes sense to me.

(I’m just gonna put this explanation here.)
When Link was sent back in time he still had the Triforce of Courage from the “future” and since only one can exist at a time it overwritten the one from the past thus breaking apart the Triforce and the other two pieces going to their “destined” holders/carriers that represented the piece the most.
That’s how Ganondorf suddenly got the Triforce of Power by some “Divine Prank”.
If Link left it behind with Zelda before being sent back in time Ganondorf from TP would never have gotten his piece. (Nor Zelda.)
Another “mess up” by OoT Zelda thinking she knows what she’s doing, woman should’ve asked for both the Ocarina of Time and the Triforce piece before sending Link back to a past before the Triforce was split. 🤦🏻‍♀️
(Although Link having the Triforce of Courage is likely why/how he was able to convince Zelda and the King of Ganondorf’s plan and eventual betrayal.)

The problem with Ganon being removed entirely is you'd have to uproot Link and Zelda as well, and at that point you're no longer under the Legend of Zelda name since you removed the core trio of characters that represented the Triforce. If you remove one of them, the other two look awkward alone. Yes, Vaati and Zant, Onyx and Veran, were villains that rail against you, but all threads of those villains end back up at Ganon(dorf). If you wanted to focus on a new villain entirely Nintendo may want to look at expanding on the world around Hyrule, but it wouldn't hold nearly the same weight I feel due to the decades of building up Link, Zelda, and Ganon, cursed to befall an endless fate for all eternity.

Why in the world would Nintendo decide to permanently retire the best villain from one of their most popular franchises? That would be nonsensical.
It’s not like the Breath of the Wild story would dictate that. That’s only a game or 2 within the franchise. If anything, it just closes out the story for Breath of the Wild. And then when they make a new Zelda game with a new story, it only has to be influenced by the story of BotW as much as the devs want it to. They can make any new story they want, with any villain they want….including Ganon.

Very quickly it becomes obvious that a gray character can do anything and that in itself quickly becomes boring. Great characters need constraints. That's why white and black characters are necessary for the longterm success of a series. When the hero ceases to act like a hero then the series is over. See Star Wars for too many examples.

In my opinion, every good story needs an ending and I personally would love to see the permanent end of Ganon’s story, seeing as how his story has dragged on for so many years. I want the Zelda series to continue moving forward with new lands and new villains, but would still love to see Ganon again in any new games set before BotW!

I'm probably alone on this one, but I'd LOVE to see a Ganon/Ganondorf that is so defeated, so demoralized, so sick of the same outcome that he tries to change the course of his own fate. I'd like to see him try endlessly or succeed to break away from the curse set by his ancestor to try and start over or become a new man. That said, the actions he took as well as how people remember him would never leave him, and lead him to ask himself if he's even making the best decision for his future. Again--probably alone on this one, but it's an idea that I'd love to see explored moreover.

I honestly really love the interpretation that the goddesses really watched them execute Ganondorf and went, "hey y'know what would really fuck with them..." and they blessed him with Power.
Oh hey there's a fanfic idea...
