I have the Old Town Sportsman PDL 106 and I bought the insert plate from Navarre kayak fishing so I could use it in creeks without the drive. That thing is super stable and I love fishing out of it. I'm glad I sold my RS117 and bought it for $1800 used but still like new. The only downside for me is the weight. I wished it was closer to the RS117 in weight. 👊👍

I chose a paddle kayak, because I fly fish and the pedal drive unit would be a fly line management nightmare. I really enjoy paddling and feel it can be more stealthy than a pedal drive, if you paddle correctly. I’m a big guy, so I went with a 2019 Jackson BigRig and love it. My newest one is a 2023 Jackson TakeTwo, which I configured for solo.

Paddle kayaks are still a great option for many people. I just upgraded to a Jackson Liska that was a 2022 leftover. Found it brand new, 50% off and paid $700 for it. At the end of this season, I am going to motorize it to cover a whole lot more water. Even all in with motor, lithium battery, pwm throttle control and diy steering materials, I will still come in for WAY less that an Old Town PDL or Native Slayer Max. Its still the best budget-conscious move especially in these crazy inflated times we are living in. Stay fishy, tight lines, and God bless!

As someone who is still in a paddle kayak(Ascend 128X), paddling it ain't bad. I have done more to this kayak than anyone every should. (NK180, outriggers, and multiple rod holders). Its a $1k kayak I have spent $2k on and now its hard to move on from.

I can agree on the 106PDL. I have taken my kayak in literally every type of fishing environment from tiny ditches to some very large lakes. The thing is an absolute beast and can be easily hauled around by yourself. Buy the $50 insert for the PDL drive and you got yourself a more than capable paddle kayak if you need one in a pinch.
I will say the prices on these kayaks are steadily going up each year. They are quickly approaching the $2600 mark across the board. Great video guys!

  • @MostlyHumanPowered

My advice for somebody getting started would be to focus entirely on how you are going to get the boat to the water. If it's a pain to launch, then you won't go fishing. My first boat was a 30 pound Stellar Dragonfly, which is a one person canoe / pack boat. Because it was only 30 pounds, it was very easy to get on top of the car. This kind of boat is not very popular, so I was able to get one for a tiny fraction of the MSRP. The only reason I moved to a pedal kayak is that I have a bad shoulder and paddling really aggravates it.
If you have a pickup, then a pedal kayak will go in the back without too much trouble. But if you are loading it on top of the car, I would get something as light as you possibly can. If your boat is too heavy / dangerous to load, then you won't go fishing. Everything else you said about wind, getting pulled around, etc. is true, but those are just optimizations once you are on the water.
I'm frustrated that the industry has focused more on making kayak-shaped bass boats than much lighter craft. I seriously considered a Hobie Lynx, but I was concerned the hull was way too fragile.

as someone who has been kayak fishing (paddles only) since 2003ish I have completely ditched my yaks and gone to an inflatable SUP. Gili Meno 11'6" with a 485 pound capacity at only 23 pounds. I will leave it inflated all season with no issue, or can deflate it and inflate it with a power inflator so storage is no bigger than a large storage tub. Its nice to be able to stand, lay out if I want to nap, sit on the edge for drop shots...you name it. Plus I can change out fins so I can go even shallower than a yak. Strap on a cooler and now you have a seat / tackle storage / food and drink stash. The paddle is never an issue with a leash, just lay it flat on board and its not in the way.

This is why I like nucanoe. I’m 90% a shallow river smallmouth guy. I like hitting stretches that almost no one gets to. But that also takes time, so if I just want to get out quick I’ll hit the lake 10 minutes from my house. So if I’m doing a down river float, it’s just stripped down to a paddle. But if I want to do a lake I can put a 33lb Honda 3horse on in 5 minutes and not have to worry about a battery. And if you want you can have quick release spot lock trolling motor on the front.

Regarding all comments about pedal kayaks prices: right now the industry is just going bigger and more expensive but I really wish they start to go smaller, lighter and cheaper for these pedal drive. That being said, I own a 16’ fishing boat and a fishing paddle kayak for years. Would never sell one or the other. But then I bought a PDL… I will sell my fishing boat shortly. It’s that great. Best of both worlds even if it’s not perfect. So yea, they are expensive! But WAY cheaper than a boat… Still, I want the industry to start going smaller and lighter and cheaper to expand market…

    2. Pedals, they are easier and have the advantages you talked about. Better for fishing in most circumstances but
    3. Paddles are better in the shallow/weed, easy to move, have a clean deck that is better for standing since there is no pedal and let you at pretend you are getting some exercise while enjoying the simplicity of the outdoors
