Good info, Trip. I bought that same vintage Perception Eclipse Sea Lion this summer as my entry level sea kayak for a fraction of the cost of new. Learning that I love it, both fit and performance wise so far, and it was definitely a stepping stone toward my eventual lighter and better performing boat as I learn more about the sport. Thanks for the info.

personally when at all possible rent and spend some time in a kayak you are thinking about getting before you buy . there is nothing worse than buying what you think will be a great kayak then after the purchase finding out you can not set in it for more than 20 minutes at a time. rent before you buy

Really good info for folks getting into kayaking. Definitely buy used to begin with !! I've bought about 25 kayaks in as many years paddling and all but two were used. If you buy at 1/2 or less of MSRP, at worst you should resell the kayak for what you paid - even on 10+ year old kayaks.
Also, budget for a couple kayak lessons from an ACA or BCU instructor....basic day lessons are inexpensive and will introduce you to many ways to maneuver a kayak that you will not pick up on your own or by only watching videos. And, they will also teach you several rescue methods which may save your life or that of another paddler.
Used is the way to go, got 2 16ft fiberglass sea kayaks that came with a pair of spray skirts, pair of aqua bound carbon fiber sting ray paddles, a bilge pump and 2 malone carry racks and all the tie downs for 1200. thats a damn good deal too good to pass up.

I totally agree with you, Trip. The kids and I rented kayaks a handful of times to get introed in the sport and get some basic choices decided (e.g., we prefer sit-ins). I put in a lot of time to shop on Craigslist, letgo, Facebook Marketplace, Offer Up and local EBay. Shop after the season and look for motivated sellers - moving, shutting down a summer home or spouse's pressure to sell. I bought over $2K worth of kayaks in 3 different brands and 3 different sizes for 1/3 the price. That way we'll swap among them so we know what size and features we really want if/when we go all in on new boats later on.

Buying used is a great way to get into this sport. Like many, i just wanted something to get me out on the lake so I bought a Lifetime kayak from Walmart. It was great because it did just that - it got me out and in 2 days on the water it taught me enough to know that I love this sport and wanted a better kayak. So I bought a used Dagger Blackwater 10.5. I knew it was an older boat, but it came with a spray skirt, & fiberglass paddle with adjustable length and feathering. It has one bulkhead/dry hatch and a drop down skeg - lots of new features to try out. I love this boat. It’s much faster than a Lifetime, has a cockpit with a rim that you can get your knees into for steering, so you can begin to feel what it’s like to have a boat that fits around you and becomes part of you. I’m sure it’s not a fast boat compared to longer modern touring boats, but it’s a great crossover/light touring boat for when I don’t plan to go too far. I’ve since added a Dagger Specter 15 and Perception Carolina 16 in a package deal where the seller threw in paddles, life jackets, deck bags, bilge pumps, spray skirts, cockpit covers and even a Thule rack for 2 boats. Package deals are great because sellers often throw in a lot of expensive accessories just to get the boat sold and it allows you to try out a lot of gear for sizing and functionality. Keep what you want and sell what you don’t need. Don’t be afraid to spend a little money just to try something. You can always sell it if it doesn’t work for you. Trying out different boats is definitely part of the fun at this stage and buying used is a really affordable way to do it. I suspect winter time is also a buyers market for used boats because people just want them gone and prospective buyers thin out when the weather changes.

I just ordered a new kayak. This is not my first kayak. My first kayak was a sit-in I got at Dick's for less than 500$. The one I just ordered is a 2019 FeelFree Moken 12.5. FeelFree is currently selling the 2019 models at about a 150$ discount. I got this kayak because i can fish on it, camp with it or kick back drink a beer or two and just go with the flow.

I just brought a nice venture easky 15 kayak of facebay I sat inside cockpit and it's the most comfortable kayak I ever sat in can't wait to take it on the water.

Love to Sail. But you got me quite interested in Kayaking now. I already have five boats. I guess one more can't hurt. I love to camp also. I think this would be ideal. I'll blame it on you, if that's okay. Now I have to figure out what endurance I'll have trying to paddle one of these at my age. I'm an old man.
Good video, I'm only a young 14 year old, But I really want to get into kayaking. Mostly for camping and fishing and this helped me with what I need to look for.

I agree you think you want these things in a kayak I got a pungo 105 and I love it but I would go with something little more tipsy on my next one I don't want just the most stable feeling kayak

I picked up a lot of my whitewater gear at Nantahala Outdoor Center's guest appreciation festival that they have in the fall. they have a swap meet kinda deal going as well as selling off a lot of the outfitter's used gear. I think some of my local paddling clubs do swap meets from time to time as well.

Thanks for sharing some great info. I did the same as you. My first kayak was off CL. My second one will be too now that I heard some of your ideas on the matter. I also think its good to have more than one. For one reason, it's always fun to take a friend and they might not have a kayak. Another reason is the type of water you will be on my call for different types of kayaks. I love my kayak, but am having some issues with lower back pain from the seat. Might have to make some mods. I'm with you. Never done any seat mods myself, but have seen others. All I know is it hurts my back after awhile. Maybe a different kayak is the answer, but Ill try messing with the seat a little first.

Yea, the mods I have seen done are not the prettiest. I just think about how any mod I would do probably will hold water and be an annoyance. But of course there may be a better way to do it an avoid that.

Now I'm questioning making any mods. I think I'll lookaround at some other kayaks. Mods could ruin the resale value of the one I have. I'd love to find one like that old grey one you have. You did a great job cleaning that up. I recall you saying there was grass growing out of it when you first got it.
Exactly, you don't want to have it for sale and someone ask why the seat is butchered. Then you say something like "It's horribly uncomfortable". That could scare off a few people lol.
It was a lucky find, as was my yellow one. There was grass growing in it yes, and through the webbing, the webbing was rotten and it just needed some love. It's a great kayak though.

Great advise Trip. What you said made lots of sense. I think it's time I upgrade the kayak I own to something larger! I bought it off craigslist but it can't hold me and very much gear. And I agree I like the sit in! 😁

I saw a video of you making a sailing dinghy. Have you ever thought of maybe making a kayak from a kit or plans? Chesapeake Light Craft has a good selection and I've seen others as well. I was thinking of a kit myself.

Thanks for the tips. I just found a brand new Perception Essence 17 on Kijiji. The guy won it in a draw and it has never seen water, but I picked it up for a steal of a price. Now I have to wait for the ice to melt so I can get out on the water. These Canadian springs are slow to roll around.
+Chris Koski You betcha! I just sold my Perception Shadow today looking to get into a new yak. Was thinking a WS Tempest 170 but now you've got me looking at the Essence 17, looks like a good one. +SailingandSuch Oh the Tempest is a beautiful boat but I'm a little big for it at 6'4" and 265 lbs. The Essence has a little more breathing room for me :) They are both great boats from what I've read though. Can't wait to see more of your trip videos, thanks for all the effort that you put into them!

I went kayaking a couple of times and thought I'd like to do it more, so I started looking for my own kayak (hate borrowing) and I didn't want to purchase an expensive kayak to start with. I looked though the want adds on Craigslist, and face book marketplace, and it seemed to me that the prices were so close to new that buying a new one made more sense. I went all out shopping for a kayak, looked at them at all the stores. Finally I found a great deal on a Sundolphin Journey 10ss sit on kayak at a box store that someone bought and returned. I looked at reviews on RUclips, and thought that they were a good option for a beginner. Well I only owned it for two weeks and put it up for sale because even in a fast flowing river I had to paddle the darn thing or it would turn completely around in a matter of seconds. I had to paddle down stream for a 4 hr trip while mostly everyone else just floated and steered their kayaks. I had also bought a new Future Beach Voyager 10.4 angler. I liked it okay but it was slow compared to some of my friends, it however tracts nice and is very stable, but again, I found it wasn't one I liked very well. After I sold my Sundophin I went out and purchased a Old Town Vapor 10, it's seems to be a faster kayak, and it's pretty stable. I think I'll keep it. I will probably bring it to Florida when I come down to check out the rivers there. All in all you make some very valid points concerning the purchase of a kayak. It seems that up here in Michigan people want almost as much for used kayaks as you can buy a new one for... every once in awhile you see a good deal on one but usually it's gone when you call. Hey trip I know this is a realy old video but thanks for making this. Back when I first started kayaking it wasnt popular were I was living at the time. I read everything I could on kayaks and decided to build my first kayak. It wasnt perfect but it got me on the water with my non existing budget AKA no money . I was 21 yrs old and full of energy. I have built 4 kayaks to date. Two stich and glue kayaks of the same design from blue prints, one SoF kayak snd my latest is a cedar strip kayak. I have bought one used touring kayak and three new ones. At present I still own 4 kayaks. I tend to hold on to kayaks so I can take friends or my childrens friends with us.
I always tell people to make a list first before they ever buy one. First is what you plan to use it for. Second will I be in it for long streches or short paddles. Do you have a fear of being trapped in one? It surprises me how many people are actualy scared of that. Then I suggest they try out several kayaks that fit what they are looking for. Then how much do you want to spend? I always recomend buying used ones. Its alot cheaper and if they decide this isnt for me they can get all or most of their mony back. I built my last kayak 18.5 years ago and I still love it. Im going to build another one slightly longer of the same design. I camp alot out of mine and I want to storage capacity. My 21 yr old daughter wants my old one. Thanks again. Btw I am up to date on all you new youtube videos. Keep it up.

I love it I bought mine used for $600 but it needed new hatch covers but all together it wasn't anywhere near the almost 2K they want new and I do a lot of kayaking around the Brunswick/St. Simons GA area I am getting a group together and doing a 3 day trip down the Satilla river here in South GA the first week in April if you wanted to go and anyone else also

I just subscribed. You have a good channel. I'm new to Kayaking and I've been looking at them on Craigslist. I'm 6'3" and weigh 290. Should I go with a 16 foot, sit in sea kayak? I like the look of those and would love to get one with a sale. Even the used sea kayaks are expensive, but I want to get into this sport really bad to lose some weight and have fun.

Depends on your goals for kayaking. I love the long sit ins.... Haven't tried one with a sail on it yet but I'm really wanting to. Be sure you try sitting in one before you buy it as they can be different sizes for different sized people.
kayaks do have capacities and height ranges you size will not fit in any 16' sea kayak. You'll need 17'+ If you are 290 you need a kayak with minimum capacity of 350 lb. Look at the Current Design Solstice or Titan. If you're looking to spent much less than 700 it will be a tough find.

Well, a lot of times once the local paddling season ends people will put their yaks up for sale. We are near the end of the season so you have that going for you. Just keep an eye out. I'll keep the camera rolling!
DISCGOLF DADDY Facebook has something called Marketplace .. a collection of several local “Groups” which you can join and advertise your goods in .. like Craig’s List. Check those out. Lots of yaks in my area.

That's right! I try to pretend the camera is a buddy I'm hanging out with.
Another option for a beginner is to go on a guided day tour or camping tour. You will either love it & buy your own kayak or hate it & not waste money on buying a kayak.
Also, buy a kayak you can grow and advance in; you won't regret it. And don't be afraid of plastic - you can really beat them up.

Really good video! Thanks for the tips. I want to start kayaking but I'm not totally sure about the type of kayak that would better fit my needs... The mountains and the sea are both 1 hour from my place (I'm from northern Italy) so I'd need a versatile kayak which I could use both in the sea, in flatwaters and in easy whitewaters. I also like camping and I'd like to go on long trips. So, does a kayak that versatile exist or do I need to buy two kayaks? I've read touring and crossover type could be the right choice, is that true?
Glad you thought so! Well... Only issue with a crossover (which I'm assuming is a shorter sit inside) is that in white water they can get full of water and sink.... I'd personally suggest a SUP for all of it though ;)
Solid advice, it reminded me of my old days when I was gearing up for canoe camping, as I did alot of the very things you discussed, and as a long time canoe camper, I am ready to buy my first Kayak, and will follow much of your advice. By the way, how can I get some stickers?

I found a nice 17' Valley Skerray made in 94 for $200. I replaced the hatch covers and will replace the rigging and I have a terriffic touring boat that will last me for years. 2 months later I found a beautiful 1996 Perception Chinnook NW 16' for $350 for my wife.
Great boats are out there with September (in Maine) being the best time to buy.

You said in a video you are looking at getting a Tempest because of the updated features. I am looking at a Sealoution II XS (14 feet) to buy and I was wondering how you thought the seating, tracking, performance was on your Sealoution. I am looking at a Tsunami 140 too and there is plenty of info on that but not much on the Sealoution.
+spider0804 What do I think if the Sealution? I think it's fantastic. Being as mine is as old as it is and still holding up well I can't say enough about it. Great yak, I was luck to buy it as my first touring yak. I'm guessing the Sealution is used and cheaper? (although I do believe they are still making the sealutions so it could be newer) Me personally I'd choose the Tempest for reasons stated but the Sealution would be a great boat. Get whatever you can afford is the best option! Just getting out there is the most important. Let me know what you choose, I'd like to hear what you think. Thanks!
The shop has the Sealoution XS, Tsunami 125, Tsunami 140 all with rudders and I plan to demo them and pick one. The Tsunamis are new and blue and the Sealoution is used and green. I may not remember to let you know but I will try.

too funny!!! my 2 touring boats are WS Sealution XL Grey, which was covered in grass and green algae when i got it.... and a prijon seayak yellow. so many similarities in our styles man. peace!

We have an inflatable 2 man. We want to do sea kayaking around the Jurassic coast. We've used our inflatable for that but now want 2 plastic kayaks. As for new vs used? Well right now in 2020 I've seen used kayaks on eBay sell for MORE than the retail price. We paid £89 for our inflatable on Amazon 15months ago and we could sell it now for £250-300. You can still buy it new but as people don't research these things it's easy to get way more therefore driving up what people are asking. If your after a £2-4k kayak then yes buy used. A £400-800 kayak may aswell buy new.

@@TripSmith I think it's because of lockdown and travel restrictions that the UK has seen a mahoosive boom in people taking up kayaking. Given the age of your video it would have been bang on, but Covid-19 has turned everything on its head 😳
How much do your Kayak's weigh? Do you ever have to move them around by yourself? What tips/tricks to you have to loading them on vehicles or carrying them around. I am looking to buy my first one used soon, but I am not sure how much weight I can handle, since I will be kayaking solo and moving it solo.

+Chris Lentz About 60lbs empty. Not sure when they are loaded.... I pretty much always move them around myself, not much issue. I haven't done a video on how I load it on my truck, basically because I don't have good method just a method that works.... Sit On Top kayaks tend to be heavier than Sit Insides so be aware of that. Some of them can get really heavy when Sit Insides can get lighter.
If you are concerned about the weight, there are ways to make it easier. I have a small cart that I can roll them around on that I use frequently. As for loading it on a vehicle there are simple ways you can handle it that make it pretty easy on yourself. I wouldn't put to much worry into it.

I bought a Wilderness Systems Tsunami 145 with rudder yesterday, it is a bit sun faded,,with normal wear and tear. I paid $500.00. Would you say that was a good deal???
I'd say it was pretty fair. Depending on the year and the condition of the bungees, seat and hatches. Good boat none the less!

Ummmm, I doubt it bud. Craiglists is a free classifieds website where normal people post their stuff for sale. You MIGHT can get someone to ship one but it would be really hard in my opinion.

I already have a 10 ft kayak with basically zero storage for camping gear. I been looking at a 12 ft sit on top fishing kayak from bass pro. Do you think this will work well for kayak camping in shallow rivers and creeks being that it is so much heavier and designed to be fished out of?
I know about those types of yaks, not exactly the best for camping... I think it'll be fine. What really determines how low it sits in the water is how much junk/weight you have loaded into it ;-)
in your video you discus the sizes of kayaks I've had some trouble finding more info on this i'm looking to buy a touring kayak and i'm 5.2 feet, 110-115 pound and not sure were to start length and size of the boat if you could make a video it would be most helpful thanks :3
Thanks for the suggestion for a new video topic Rachel! Good one. Since I don't have the video yet I'll tell you- if you are looking used, find a kayak in your area and look it up on paddling.net at the reviews. People will review them telling you their height and weight and how the kayak fits them. That's what I've done to figure it out in the past.

How’s that chair? I had one and the pole went through the fabric (apparently a common problem with that model) I bought a flex lite from REI which is lighter and has lasted me longer.

The yellow is a Perception, the silver is Wilderness Systems. I got a good deal on them ;) If I were you I'd look up other kayaks that are the same model and price them that way. Sounds like a decent deal if it's close by.

Hey Wyatt! I couldn't get comortable in it personally. Loved the features on it like how the hatches secured but just couldn't get comfy in the seat so it had to go.... Some people love it some don't...

I got both of those yaks off of Cragslist. For sailing? That's something I'm very interested in doing with my yaks. ALthough I have found that the best one to sail with is a yak with a skeg. I'm personally wanting to step up to the Tempest 170 by Wilderness Systems.

The problem with buying used is a that you end up with someones pathetically heavy discarded rotomolded PE boat whereas, kayaks used to be really light weight skin on frame, or stitch and glue ply. Then they went into heavier GRP and later even heavier PE that required a thick foam web to prevent collapse and entrapment. The only alternative to this excess weight became extremely expensive carbon and Kevlar comp boats. Now though, there is thermoformed Plastic which will get you an 18 kg, 40 lb sea kayak for about $3k or more. But at least you can just pick it up and shoulder it across terrain to the water etc, no more dragging or wheely trolleys or need for help to lift the darn thing onto roof racks. Se we are at least heading back in the right direction again with portability after about 50 years of this built like a tank madness. But $3K for something people used to build at home from some strips of wood and a few yards of canvas and tow behind their bicycle from home to the water....... Progress?
Some people may not have the ability to build so I'm just happy then can buy if they need to.
The weight of the kayak makes no difference....in the water. In fact some of the lighter kayaks are susceptible to wind cocking and need ballast to track straight.
A light kayak is a flimsy kayak.
I am perfectly happy with my 63 lb Seda Glider. Of course I launch it at the boat ramp.
@@davehaggerty3405 That's not exactly all true. A light kayak is much easier and convenient to load, transport, unload & launch (especially in adverse localities. In the water, it displaces less volume, with less cross section & has less wet surface area. This reduces both skin friction and wave drag and increases it's responsiveness to both control and sea conditions. It is like a live thing which is pure delight. For the same shape & volume, it rides over the sea better and with less effort, with less water over the deck. True that as a result of having less hull below the water and more in the air, the kayak will be more subject to wind, but the, light kayak needs less volume and can be designed with a much low deck profile. Having a low volume makes the boat effortless to roll. Have a look at Greenland kayaks, you can lay flat on the back deck or lay over the side in the water (have a rest) and not capsize. True that boats of the same materials can be stronger when heavier. However, materials are not all equal in their strength and toughness, so that is a general trend but not emphatically always true. Weather cocking is a function of side area distribution above and below the waterline which in turn is also affected by the paddlers position & distribution of loads. Obviously we want the paddler to be positioned to minimise drag at touring speed, rather than compromise paddling efficiency for handling. So balancing all this is a largely a design and trim issue.
Don't settle for a "beginner" kayak. Go big or go home (disappointed).

Potato, that is a Wilderness Systems, Sealution II. Love it. I've since sold the yellow one because it wasn't very comfortable to sit in for me. I plan on keeping the Sealution and upgrading to a newer/new Wilderness Systems Tempest 170 eventually..... They have incredible seats and other features on them.
I just bought a field & stream eagle run... Is this a good enough yak to float long distance say 20 miles or so ...? I wanna float the Brazos in Texas
That will work just fine. 20 miles is a relatively short distance so most any kayak will do. Have fun on your float!

Well, sounds like you need a sit inside touring type yak if you can get in one comfortably and safely. I'd definitely visit a dealer where you can try sitting in some.
You can try a Wilderness Systems Tempest 170. If not that I'd try a WS Tarpon 160 (it's a sit on top but handles more like a touring yak).
If those don't work out, I'd look at a Mad River Canoe, Adventure 16. You can use it for two people or a single configuration.

If you are sitting on top, it is a sityak. Please don't be confused by all the 'young' folks who think they are kayaks. Kayaks, canoes, sityaks, all different things.

I recently get a 2007 wilderness system 17' with the rear hatch cover missing. Any thoughts on how to replace it? they have been discontinued for years
I really don't know.... I'd just start on Google and reading forum posts if you can. "Wilderness systems hatch replacement forum" might be a good place to start

what's the average size for a sea kayak? does the rudder really make much of a difference that one without it would be more challenging to handle?
I'd say 16' probably. The rudder is really only used when you are fighting current or winds. I have used mine about 2 times so I wouldn't say it's mandatory but it's nice to have when you need it.
is there much difference as far as performance between 14 and 16 footers? i just happen to like 14 but I'm trying to get my first sea kayak. already have two sit on top.

Why would you want the 14 over the 16? Price? They are pretty close... The 14 is lighter? They are pretty close... Easier to maneuver? They are pretty darn close... Easier to transport? Basically the same...
The advantages of the 16' over the 14' is - Better tracking, faster cruising speed, more internal storage (2' worth which is A LOT), more load capacity.
I don't see a reason personally to go with the 14 over the 16....
well, price most of all. found a neck for $500 14 feet but i might be just a hair tall for it. but recently found a 15 feet long Dag with rudder for $850. i just want to buy one and" not buy again" but i guess ill go for a 15 or 16.
I'd say comfort is number 1 probably then price. If you aren't going to fit comfortably inside of it it's not worth any price... Sounds like the Dagger is the better option to me since you fit it. Also since you want to buy once, it's probably a nicer yak anyhow so go for it!

Ok trip, or anyone who can answer I know this is an old video but anyways. Anybody know anything about an rpc3 18ft fiberglass touring kayak... I'm assuming it's a carolina kayak that is no longer in business but I can't find another one on the internet to see whether it's a good kayak or not. It's a concept on their 16ft from what the Craigslist add says? Any insight would be great from anyone pretty much. Kayak I have is like the cheapest 13 ft non semetrical molded cheap plastic (like interior of a vehicle plastic) kayak and love it but want something better lol anyways happy paddling none the less!!!
If you can get it for a cheap price it may be worth looking at. I'd be sure to sit in it though before buying it to be sure you are comfortable in it. That is very important. Then just be sure it doesn't leak anywhere ;)

Depends, I think I'd go with a higher volume. Depends on if you plan on taking longer trips and how your packing habits are. I believe the main advantage to lower volumes are less windage, I could be wrong. For longer expeditions though, a high volume. If you aren't concerned majorly about ultra efficiency then high volume.

Like I described, buy whatever is available and you can afford just to get out there..... Once you get going you'll be able to figure out what you want/need.

Yes, and no..... I have actually sold the yellow kayak several months back. The reason I sold it is because I couldn't get comfortable in the seat after sitting for a short time. The yellow yak was newer, had better hatch covers, better bungees and straps for attaching gear to the deck and maybe a few other small things. But, I have learned that comfort is more important that all of those factors. That is the main reason I'm looking at a Wilderness Systems Tempest 170 for my next yak. They have an incredible seat that I've read that anyone can get comfortable in them. Plus it has lots of other really cool options that just make it more convenient to use.... Can't wait till that day comes, just not sure when it will be.

I have actually... Some of my first RUclips videos were actually of me building a sailing dinghy about 9 years ago. From that I learned it's much cheaper and easier to get out on the water with a used kayak. However there is a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction with building your own. I could see myself building one in the future, just not the near future.

My problem is I don't trust ppl. I don't need to purchase one eventually used to find out that it looks good, but was repaired from major damage, and I don't found out until I'm on the water. 😐
Most of the time I find that kayaks are pretty simple and are easy to inspect. I haven't ran across one with major damage that wasn't obvious.

Wal-Mart sells polyester resin & fiberglass. For plastic kayaks contact the manufacturer and sometimes they can provide original plastic for plastic welding.

Interesting perspective jade. I have actually built my own sailing boat (it was my first videos here on RUclips years ago) I have found that I'd prefer to spend months on the water vs months in the shop working on a boat. Plus it's usually cheaper to buy a used one vs building new.....
@@TripSmith a small sail boat is more complicated than a large kayak.
even so,with good plans a small sailing vessel can be built in 2 weeks or less if you prep properly.
a kayak with good plans(stitch n glue or skin on frame) can be built in a few 8 hour days
a skin on frame can be on the water in 3 days from start if you are organized-finished in 2 but one extra day for sealant(paint) to cure.
even fast dry high solvent paints need time to cure to full set

I'm saving up for the Tempest 170 myself as I believe it fits the bill wonderfully for my intended purposes.
