I currently have a thinkpad t470s i7 and display 2560*1440p on the Lenovo dock and link to an e-GPU via thunderbolt 3 to a external monitor thinkvision p24h. I want to upgrade to this model p43s because it has the built-in nVidia Quadro and the new USB type-C/Thunderbolt-3 combo docking. My t470s has the old generation of dock connector and since I want to get another one for my kid, we both want to have the same compatible docking station so that when he needs to use his thinkpad, all he has to do is un-dock mine and dock his.
Hi, thanks for the brief review. I recall for several years Lenovo's been applying threshold for thermal throttle as low as 70°C. How's it on this machine? With only one fan, did you notice any thermal issue? What's the temperature on idle and stress test? Regarding the TB3 port, do you plan to use eGPU on this particular model?
I never seemed to have issues with the heat on this unit. EGPUs are a bit out of my price range but I would LOVE to try!!
I purchased the WQHD 2k with 500 nits HDR display version, will arrive tomorrow, im finally moving from macbook pro..
Let me know what you think of it =)
I would like to move from MacBookPro too. How are you finding your P43s?
@@samiam5326 I love it, you wont regret it, i'm never going back to macbook again.
this thing is an alright ultrabook machine with a GPU that's a little better than the integrated graphics. I went from using a W540 to the P43s and the weight was a nice difference, but the power just wasn't there.
I returned it and instead opted for the P1 gen 2, the GPU performance is 100x better and the overall user experience of the p43s pales in comparison.
The blank slot that you wonder about is actually WWAN card slot. Wifi card is the half-inch square card that is soldered to the board next to it.
For the very bad performance with GTA 5. I think the reason is that you are running on the integrated video card instead of using Nvidia card, I know this because Quadro P520 is more than capable of pushing this game to minimum of 30fps in medium settings. Go to nvidia control panel to set the game to run on the card
I really hope your right. It should have switched it over to the better video card under higher use. But I admit, I don't know what triggers the switch.
What settings was gta 5 set to? Are you sure it was using the dedicated graphics and not the integrated graphics?
So my original comment was just after purchasing the unit. Turns out it throttles quite aggressively while trying to game.
So here's the way to at least game on this thing.
Install TPfancontrol
Install Throttlestop
Use TP fan control to jack the fan curve way up (it's still really quiet)
Use throttlestop to disable turbo boost.
This keeps the CPU fan temp way down (but still really performant) and gives the gpu more wiggle room. The GPU should keep 90-95% of its stock clock speed because what's happening on default settings is the old 14nm architecture it hogging all the thermal allowance of their meagre cooling solution.
Using these settings my GPU core clock stayed between 1300mhz and 1430 mhz and allowed the two games I tested (DayZ and Dying Light) to play as one would expect on say an MX150. Previously these two titles were unplayable.
Hope this helps someone else with the same issues.
Additionally, using a usb c hub for power and external display kills all throttling.
thank you dear sir, I'm getting my p43s today
The nub is amazing
Hey man, this laptop plays GTA V fine. I think in your test it was using the UHD 620.
I agree. 100%
"It's not even one pound"
It's over three pounds. I don't think any laptop is under one pound, for that matter. Even iPad Air weighs one pound.
Wow I said that? Yeah that was a dumb thing to say.
For the GTA V game, is this not a good gaming computer?
I am more interested in running CAD and Solidworks on it. Is this doable?
Oh yeah. Depends what size of drawings your using but this unit is much better than any E or T series Lenovos. You should be right at home.
Yeah its not the best for GTA but with low specs it can be done.
Thanks Nev - decent video. Though, I have to be honest - I can't get my head around why you benchmark a machine that doesn't sell itself as a gaming machine, by testing it with a game. Especially GTA V.
Sup L00ps? It gets more views. For some reason everyone wants to know if the system I review can play GTAV or Fortnite
Thanks for being honest 😂.@@NevsTechBits
'powerful' lol. Sud be wayy thinner n lighter as it only packs Ultrabook hardware. Also battery is tiny.
I bought a ThinkPad P53s only for one reason: play cs go, and i cant make it possible. FUCK
Why won't it work? Looks like the specs should be there.
You can't be a ThinkPad enthusiast and still use the touchpad ... sorry.
LOL Is that how it works, eh?
@@NevsTechBits try the trackpoint, you're gonna realise how useful it is, I can even do 3D CAD with just the trackpoint, which is impossible with touchpad. Give it a try, it's amazing.
Nev's Tech Bits yes sir. TrackPoint is a religion in itself.
