Love thiccpads. I have a P50, myself. Having the added heft in the base of the laptop does improve the typing experience because it feels more solid in your lap. I don't get the same stability when typing on an X1 Carbon 6th gen. Build quality is definitely better in the X1C, with keys that are more tactile, springy, and don't wobble like the P50, but P50 has superior weight and travel distance.

Louis Roussman once showed another benefit of a T440 over later models. Since the T450 the batteries cannot go beyond the back end, because of the hinges that make the laptop thinner. If you take a bigger battery it gives you something to hold the laptop while it's open and that way you can actually work on it while you are on a walk. Also the newer style of hinges seems to break more often, but that might only count for macbooks. Had I known that I can replace the clickpad, I would have gotten a T440. But I'm still happy with my T450s

I’ve owned a couple of these over a couple of years now. The first one I had, I accidentally snapped one of the latches for the touchpad ribbon, preventing me from connecting one to the main board. I decided to pick up another and found one on eBay for £130! This had an i3 CPU, but the beauty of this laptop is the socketed CPU. Upgraded to an i7 with 16GB RAM, 480GB ssd and a 1080p IPS display for less than £200. If you look at the build quality and specs of a modern laptop at £330 (the most I would have payed the the laptop + upgrades) they don’t come close. I’ve not used a brand new laptop that feels this solid in years. They just don’t make them like this any more. Most of the things you’d want to upgrade are under the bottom cover which takes 2 screws to remove. I’d take a half inch extra thickness for this any day. Its better than having to use a spudger to pop snaps out of place to upgrade your ram, risking affecting the way the case fits together permanently. This hardware plays nicely with linux out of the box too, a massive bonus. I hope in the future lenovo can appreciate why people like these older models and what makes them the “engineers” laptop, and wake up to the fact that its the product which is truly great, not the aesthetic and brand

Thanks for all of the detail and recommendations. I've got a T440p with a deluxe docking station and I'm super happy with it. I'm running Windows 10 [upgraded with the Insiders Program] and am able to power my Software Development tools with WSL2 [Windows Subsystem for Linux 2nd Edition] with Ubuntu LTS. There are videos available on this setup and I plan on making some when I get settled in on how to do so. I'm opting to keep Windows because I prefer much of Adobe software for my photography business, and just don't want to add complexity to my life with multiple OSs. I may switch my T420 with Windows 7 to a Linux Distro though as Windows 7 is no longer supported.

Popped an SSD in there and installed Manjaro and I'm very happy with it as is. I don't really get your problems with the trackpad, not the greatest in the world but it's fine, it's functional. Honestly, while you say this is for the tinkerer I think it's just great for more casual users as well or people who just need a cheap, solid machine.

The screen is glossy and the colours aren't accurate, but 1440p res, 8gb of ram and solid 4-7 hours of battery life. I only use my notebook when being on the go and therefore I don't need much power and a thick&heavy wouldn't fit in my backpack as well. But if weight and size aren't a problem I'd pick up one as well.

I used to have a T500 with 2, maybe 3 hours of battery life max. I used it for school and couldn't really use it all day due to the battery life. It was also super heavy and the screen was awful. The T440 might have a much better screen and maybe better battery life but it's still heavy and new Laptops are honestly better for a lot of things.
Fun fact: You only have to go up slightly in price to match the Haswell quad cores and those are at half the TDP and you get a way slimmer machine. Not every new Laptop is a Macbook.

Also, to anyone here dealing with slow 1080p60fps youtube videos or suffering from framedrops, use the h264ify plug-in on chrome or firefox, saddly, the I5 that comes with the t440p is not supported by the newer codec youtube is using (vp9) and does not support propper hardware acceleration.

Dennis Reitinger I hear the t440 is good but I was wondering if it would last a long time

    • @dennisreitinger9659
      @dennisreitinger9659 4 года назад +1

You could use an T560 , very stable, enough Power for your use, everythings Changeable easy👌So in your case , you can buy one from a refurber, its way cheaper and its still good! Greetings Dennis

New lap tops are pretty good for compiling a lot of code, or doing a lot of video production. Sometimes that’s worth more than new ports.

i was just looking for something compact with a mid range cpu that's 'good enough' for any real work. glad I made the right choice. That's a thiccboi. I 100% want something overbuilt that can perform than a thin laptop that overheats. Wish my gaming laptop had better cooling.

I can confirm that this laptop is still very solid in 2019. Bought mine from a small refurbished store about 9 months ago with an i7 4700MQ, 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD, 9-cell battery and 1080p screen for 400 euros. Should I wanted to get a new laptop with similar specs I'd probably pay 2-3 times the amount. I'm so happy with my thicc baby !
P.S The touchpad is trash so I suggest using a mouse.

    I have some questions:
. Do you know a good configuration in parameter to undervolt one i7-4810MQ? Or any link?
. Do you know if it possible to undervolt RAM?
Thank you for sharing and really good job.

You can get a used P50 with a serious load out for under 1K. Great for heavy software development and CUDA. Otherwise I would go with a X220 with an i7 that can address 16G (4-6hr battery too). They regularly sell for under $400 and beat the pants off of any modern chrome book. You can get a micro docking station for $15, add a nice monitor and you have a powerful desktop until it dies or you get sick of it. Since they're unkillable it'll probably be the later.

Hi Wolfgang, what do you think about the i7 P51? I want to get something for music production, +30 channels 44.1 24bit
I currently have the W530 but it is kind of getting a bit old and I have problems with some apps not running correctly, mostly visually, however the W530 is i7 2,6ghz

Hello Wolfgang, I consider changing the screen of my X200S ThinkPad and would appreciate your thoughts on this. Do you think it makes sense? The reason why I haven't done it already is because I don't know where to buy a proper screen. There are offers from China on eBay but I don't know what to expect from those screens.
Thank you for your ideas in advance! Pat
