My 12-year-old W520 is still my main laptop - I was using it less than an hour ago. When I first bought it it was an absolute beast, and 12 years later after a RAM upgrade it's still fine for 90% of anything I need to do on a computer.

I have an HP 8740w mobile workstation and it is just like this Lenovo. Large, heavy and solid. My employer was recycling it and I grabbed it out of the bin. It came with 16gb of ram, a Quadro FX3800M GPU, I7 720M CPU and Win 7 64 bit OS. I have repurposed it into a Win XP gaming machine and it works great. The screen resolution is 1920 x 1200 and plays everything I throw at it. I love these old mobile workstations.

Daily used a W520 for a couple of years then upgraded to a Precision M6600 that later got replaced by an M18x R2 and currently using an heavily modded M6800 that I just installed an RTX 3000 (2060 Mobile) along with some other nice goodies. Anyway one thing next to no one knows about is that with an adapter install an nvme drive as extra storage sometimes several depending on the model. I've even added a 2280 4TB drive after doing some metal work.

I still use a Thinkpad w541 for my heavy lifting
It's made cameos in my videos, and it generally orbits me whilst I'm doing more technical tasks
I used to stream out of it with 5 monitors running off the beast with an ultradock, and a capture card running via USB 3.1
While I do have a t450s as a general laptop, this thing is a MACHINE. A combined power draw of 200w total and a hyperthreaded quad core, with a 2gb Quadro make this thing an absolute rendering beast, broadcast specialist, 3d modeling professional, and much more
It's a tool in my arsenal, not just a laptop, and I have yet to see another beat it bar maybe the p70.
Until I get my hands on one of those though, despite being an older machine, I'll probably stick with it for another decade.

I believe e-sata port in this machine is also USB2.0. So If someone needs more USB ports, then there you have it. Esata is great on its own, as it gives you native comunication with a hdd/ssd (you don't need those pesky usb bridges). It would be awesome if it was SATAIII(6Gbps), but i think in most laptops esata was SATAII (3Gbps). Good enough for HDD, but not enough for SSD.

I owned a lower-spec W510 with the HD+ LCD which I then flipped to a sorry soul for probably too much money. Nowadays I still have a W530 but it mostly just sits about. These early Intel Core laptops still hold up for Internet browsing and still get decent battery runtime, they show their age in their TN LCDs, chunky shapes, lack of modern i/o, and of course their power efficiency.

I love the fact that they don't classify machines this big as laptops anymore, yet they're among the only ones you can use on your lap without getting third degree burns from the temps the "thin and light" ones run at xD

Hi , I also have a computer similar to the blogger's. This computer was indeed the first 4-core notebook with a touchscreen in the universe. I am very interested in the color correction software you mentioned at 7 minutes, because I am using hueypro1241, which does not support Win10. Can you tell me what color correction software you are using? Could you share the software name and download link? Thank you!

I use the pantone color calibrator program for windows. I got no idea if it would work for your computer. I got it from w520 drivers under graphics pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-w-series-laptops/thinkpad-w520/downloads/driver-list/component?name=Graphics%20Processing%20Units%20%28GPU%29%20and%20Server-AI%20Accelerators&id=635380F4-448F-4129-AA77-265289D96F6F

Thank you so much for your reply! I followed your suggestion and was able to successfully install the Pantone Color Calibrator W510 color correction software on Windows 10 and get it working properly! This is amazing!
I was struggling to find a suitable color correction software before because my hueypro1241 doesn't support Win10. Thanks to you, I finally solved this problem and can now work on color correction with peace of mind.
Thank you again for your kind help!@@Duraputer

I have the sane with i7 720QM, but the CPU won’t go above 1.2GHz or 1.6GHz at best, if I disable Intel Step technology. Everything is set to MAX performance in BIOS and Windows 11 power plan. I even bought the 170W 20A power adapter, but nothing helps. Can you tell me how to uncripple the CPU?

This computer was not so well known in general, because it was not easily accessible due to its price and features, even a laptop with an i3 330m boot was already considered something quite expensive, about 250 usd in 2010. The jump of core 2 duo penryn towards the The first Intel Core startup was very imprecise, at that time many people still had their old Dell M640 and Merom or Athlonx2 processors. Not to mention that when sandy bridge arrived in 2012, the trend advanced too quickly, until ivy bridge, which was the most popular. The first generation Intel Core could not see the light for a long time, as they were quickly succeeded. The laptop in the video, the w510, could still do demanding tasks without problems, as long as it is not intended to be moved around a lot, not because it is heavy, but because of taking care of such a relic.

Get over it, it's an ancient technology.
    - even i3 7100U is faster than I7-Q820
    - Fan is loud even when idling 32.9 dB(A)
    - slow DDR3 RAM
    - Obselete Quadro FX880M can't even play 1080p 60Hz youtube video smoothly
    - What's the point of a "Mobile Workstation" weighing more than 3 KG? And always need the plug to operate
    - sad 250 nits screen

You do realize that this was released 12 years ago? Great machine for the time, still very usable today. That is brilliant.
What sets this out from modern laptops:
      Better Keyboard (subjective)
Better build at the cost of Size
Older ports for those who need it
      Cheap
      Modular and fairly repairable
      Linux support
      Coreboot cause muh freedum
      Spare parts
What you want is a macbook air.
      What I want is a W520.
