      I would be careful with the power limit. Even if you will able to solve the thermal issue probably you would need to do something with the motherboard to prevent its power limit. Especially on laptops, the factory is more likely under design the PCB rather than over. So if the MOSFETs did not blow up :) may you will need to add some extra capacitors onto the VCORE and the GPU power rails, and bigger power brick would not hurt either.

    A liquid metal tip: you should NEVER apply liquid metal directly to the die! It might squirt out of the syringe, and to all over other components. You should apply it to a cotton bud/swab, and then to the component.
    Many people killed their computers doing it incorrectly.
    This method was endorsed by Buildzoid (overclocker) among other people.

    • @NatePrikkel
      @NatePrikkel 5 лет назад +8

      I will say, it isn't hard to apply if you're careful. If you SLOWLY squeeze the syringe and be ready to pull back the second it comes out, then you're good. I've never had issues applying directly to the die, and I equate that to not being ham fisted with it.

    Perhaps the CPU height (with the adapter) affects the mounting pressure of the cooler, or somehow prevents it from mounting properly. And in that sense, the mx4 could have filled up the gap better than the liquid metal, surpassing the performance of liquid metal. Just what I thought in mind.

      Well maybe its because to the height difference that it is causing problems . this CPU is soldered to a pcb making it much thicker then a normal CPU , this heatsink also needs to make contact to the chipset... maby a pad on the chipset would make it thicker and even things out. letting the heatsink make beter contact to the die but i do not expect it to be a lot better in temperatures then good thermal paste because you are already making contact with the bare die.

    the liquid metal compound requires 2 applications about a week or so appart, if the laptop has daily use. The higher temps of the first week will chemically fuse the compound to the surfaces it is applied, and a gap will be created, between the cpu and the thermal plate. But both surfaces are now in prime condition for the heat transfer that will happen when the second application is done and this gap is filled with more liquid metal.

    Thermal compound does not (really) improve cooling. Its purpose is to facilitate heat transfer between the load and the heat-sink. Basically, a "better" thermal compound decreases the latency between the heat coming from the load and that heat transferring into the heat-sink. It really makes no difference if that heat transfer is a second or so behind some other brand. The SAME amount of heat still has to be dissipated by the cooling solution regardless of the efficiency of the compound. Buying these real expensive thermal compounds is a total waste of money, they don't really have any practical benefit at all other than reducing the heat spike when a heavy load is applied. But even cheap 50c thermal compound can handle the kinds of spikes generated by a CPU. Basically, a CPU under constant heavy load will settle on a temperature, there is an initial spike of temperature when the load is applied which then quickly settles down to a steady temperature. All you compound is going to do is (very slightly) change that initial spike and (very slightly) change the time it takes to to settle on that loaded temperature. But either way, no matter what compound you use, that loaded temperature will be THE SAME no matter which brand you use.

    • @WolfgangsChannel
      @WolfgangsChannel  5 лет назад +1

      True! Honestly, it just seems like the magical 20°C improvements that people report after applying LM come from stock thermal paste going bad (drying out, being applied excessively, etc). It can really help to squeeze the last bits of performance out of desktop systems with good cooling, but on laptops the lowest common denominator is the heatsink
      P.S. the fact remains that in my case the temperature increase was due to me not applying LM correctly

    • @spudhead169
      @spudhead169 5 лет назад

      @@WolfgangsChannel The caveat is of course, that the compound needs to be not compromised and applied correctly. There is such a thing as thermodynamics and there is NO way around it. No thermal compound can magically erase heat.
      EDIT: In many cases where thermal paste is replaced, other operations have also been performed such as replacing fans and clearing away dust. It is often those other operations that mostly contribute to the increased performance.

    • @spudhead169
      @spudhead169 5 лет назад

      @Jmac1000000 Like I said, all it does is improve the latency, (the time it takes for the heat to transfer into the heat sink) which equates to a slightly lower temperature during the transition. It is ONLY during that transition this occurs, on a dead steady load once everything has stabilised they will both perform identically. On a CPU which is changing load all the time it will appear that it has lowered the temperature a little, but that is really a false reading, both highs and lows will converge leaving the average the same. The heat-sink is still dissipating the EXACT same amount of heat on both. I say again, heat cannot magically vanish.

    They were worse because you applied too much ducktape and the contact was a lot worse because of the lack of the pressure. If you had applied it properly it would have been lowered.

    I had tried liquid metal on a desktop pc as well and had the same result. the temps where worst than using a regular thermal paste. plus is dangerous because it can short stuff on your computer if u accidentally push too hard the tube and its too hard to clean it after.

    Applying the liquid metal is not that easy. I did it 4 times on my macbook to finally get better results then the thermal paste. It is not true that you should put as little as possible. For me the correct amount was at the point that if I were to put the laptop vertical I could see a small drop of the liquid metal forming on the bottom of the chip.

      @@WolfgangsChannel Excellent answer... I was also curious... If this 4980HQ is just too hot for the T440p cooling system to dissipate the heat, what would be the feasibility of using a 4750HQ instead? Like the 4980HQ, it uses integrated Intel Iris Pro 5200 (GT3e) graphics, instead of the standard Intel HD 4600 (GT2), but would run at more reasonable clock speeds... For models without the G730M option, it could potentially be a boon..., if there're not technical issues that would preclude its use...
