Wow. "The cover wasn't easy to remove" is an understatement. I just got a P53s and I broke off all 3 corners of my triangle pry tool and I thought I had borked some tabs. Anyhow, thanks for the great video!
Same happened to me with the T560. These modern laptops are so fragile. Too bad since the laptop has last me a long time without issues. Even considering the heavy abuse I put it through. Next time getting a P53 which is more study and well built.
Hey, thank you so much for this video! i was watching your P14s upgrade video but didn't realize you made one for the P53s and showed the steps here already. I got a 16gb Crucial stick to upgrade and it works like a charm so far. Will see how it goes in the following days and weeks.
The trick to opening the laptop is open it from either the hingded part, make sure you're slow and careful here. I broke off to small clips on the number pad side of the laptop because I was being too aggressive. Don't just try to lift up, try to lift OUT, if that makes sense. Always try to lift diagonally away from the laptop case to open it.
Thank you. You answered my question. I saw that the memory was soldered but did not know if it was expandable. Glad to see that it is. I am going to buy the T590. Looks like a solid computer. I have had consumer grade HP and Dells and they just fall apart from normal use.
FYI P53s has 10 clips on the bottom, 9 clips on the top, 4 on the right, and 5 on the left. Take your time and slide slowly with your pry tool, else you'll slip and scratch the fancy laptop...like I did
The P53s and the P53 are, as stated at the beginning, different. The P53 has an extra slot for another NVMe M2and 2 extra slots for more RAM. Easy upgrade.
Cool video, but shame on Lenovo for wasting so much space inside this!!! Thinking of how much extra battery they could have fitted in and the extra sodimm slot they could have added hurts me.
Dumb question, but when you add extra ram to this model... does the computer just automatically know "hey, I've got more RAM!", or do you need to do any additional steps?
This works on P53s, but as m_a_s said, it's an understatement to say the cover isn't easy to remove. It took my 5 minutes after having loosened the screws, and despite that I broke a couple tiny black plastic parts designed to keep the cover. These were on the air exhaust side.
I have a strange issue. I can't see "To interrupt normal startup press Enter" after adding more ram. edit - * I can boot and go into my system and I see the updated Ram numbers though. I just can't get into the Bios when pressing Enter at startup. edit 2 - hang on, I re-enabled Fast Startup after installing my Ram. That's why I can't see the option. Lemme disable that and see what happens. edit 3 - Yep! can see it!
Great tutorial; thanks for posting. Quick follow-up question... You mentioned after installing going to Lenovo’s support page and downloading the “applicable drivers.”. Relatively a novice here, can you specify which drivers drivers would be “applicable”? Thanks in advance!!
Recently saw T430 at my friends house, was curious how good new thinkpad is... and well they lost every single feature that caught me in 7 years old laptop, probably should get T430 myself because there’s not so many options for compact utilitarian laptops anymore
Hi very interesting video. I ask you: i Ve a 490t with 8 GB soldered. Could i upgrade adding an 8 GB sodimm to Ve 16 GB? Or i Ve to buy a 16 GB as in the video? I do not Need 24.... thanks
thank you for video but what can you say about screen quality, color accuracy, color shifting, is it good enough for professional photo editing, or is it powerfull enough if you connect this laptop to professional 4k monitor for once again photo editing i not talking about video editing just photo editing.
Hi , Excellent presentation , i am thinking to buy one , just confused between T590 and X1 Extreme , i am not a gaming guy, want it for work , which one will be technically best for me. Thnx
i'm pretty sure the T series has versions with dedicated graphics. I use a T590 with GeForce Nvidia graphics at work. I think the P series has Nvidia Quadro graphics.
I tried open the back cover, followed all instructions but on a side it was impossible to open. I used all right tools, had a patience and could not do it. After I noticed a small crack (where the USB - on the right side) starts to appear, I have to give up. I tried this simple activity I damaged a brand new laptop. I find screws are of very bad quality and case is not rigid as it looks.
That's a great question because I saw the same thing, I even called Lenovo tech support and they confirmed that it was only 1 SSD. That said, other's have successfully put an SSD in the WWAN slot on earlier models (for example the P52s, T580, P52) so I tried to put the Lexar NM520 in the WWAN slot on this P53s. It appeared to be partially recognized in Windows (not in BIOS) and would throw an error when I tried to Initialize Disk. I talked to Lenovo and Lexar tech support with no luck. Hoping a future Lenovo BIOS/FW update make it compatible, but for now, I couldn't get it to work. If anyone has gotten WWAN to work as a 2nd SSD on the P53s (and equivalent), please let us know! Thanks
@@SpeakerFeature Thanks, I also called Lenovo tech support and got the wrong answer that there were two slots. The P53s pdf gives just a list of all four possibilities...
Not many videos on P53s so thanks for making one. What do you think of P53s version with an Intel Core i7-8565U, 8GB Ram & a 620, NVIDIA Quadro P520 (2GB GDDR5) . Looking to buy it but not sure , I've seen another RUclipsr mention CPU throttling problems on the higher spec p53 i9 version?
Thanks for the video. Was reading somewhere I can put an additional HD in the wwan slot on my P53s. Plan on maxing out my specs for the machine, but the additional drive would be very helpful when running different builds. My question, is this correct? Can I add a HD in that space?
I've tried on several models but never had any luck. Others in the community have been able to get it to work, may be FW at the time from Lenovo, but do some digging on youtube, reddit, lenovo, amazon reviews, etc. website to see if any others have gotten it to work. Let us know here too!
Hi. I want to buy a ThinkPad. It's down to T490 or T590. Which is better? My workflow is business and software development. So emails, collaboration, running servers, coding etc. Thanks.
@@SpeakerFeature Could you maybe give your opinion on the P53s in another video? Maybe after some use? Would surely be very helpful, since this overview is really nicely done too!
Appreciate it. I don't have any hands-on experience with the Razer, but it's seems to pack a punch from the specs. 15" vs 13" is the obvious big difference and the Razor seems to have come off the price since Linus reviewed it earlier this year so it's comparable to the Lenovo prices. You can't add RAM to the Razer and will be limited to 16GB if that's an issue for you.
hello , I am in need of adding a second hard drive to my T590 that can be used as a boot device. Is this possible in any way? I have read online that someone was able to add an M.2 in the WWAN port, but only some models and without them being usable as a boot drive. Any solution or suggestion?

With all things being equal what is your perspective on the difference between the P 43S and the t490s? Additionally do the colors on the screen appear dried out. I asked because I bought an X one with an LED screen and it had washed out colors where the white look yellow.
Hey, thanks for the video, question are you sure it won’t make any conflicts if I install 2666mhz 32gb on my Thinkpad P43s which came with a soldered 8gb 2400mhz, I just can’t find 32gb 1dim that has 2400mhz from a reliable brand, any suggestions?
I tried that actually and at the time the drive wasn't fully being recognized. I've seen on blogs that people have gotten it to work. Let us know if you manage get a 2nd SSD going.
Depends how much cost is a factor. Personally I'd go P1 for the 6-cores (9th gen vs 8th gen), dual NVM-e SSD, potential for more RAM, better max graphics. Form factor is nearly the same. 4k screens are the same.
I agree, I had trouble too. Make sure all the screws are loose (one may be catching) and then follow the pry order in the user manual. Once you get a few spots to pop loose it becomes a lot easier. I ended up having to put the laptop upside down in my lap and slowly pryed it loose with my fingers around the right side.
Here is my experience. Put the screen connector on the top side. Start from top, then gradually to the bottom. One of the clamp on the left side just beside the USB is very hard to open, Therefore, after opened the top side, I opened it from right bottom, then along the bottom to left.

great tips . I guess it is pretty similar for the T495. Thinking on adding RAM to mine.
At 2:46, We can see the Wlan slot is empty. Therefore, I want to ask whether we can plug a 2240 M.2 SSD to make use of that slot, too.

they do this to save money as P53s uses similar interior components with P43s. Cunning move by Lenovo
and then you get an exploding laptop with no room for battery expension in case of a defect.
