A first basemen that really deserved the gold gloves he won .✌️
And a better all-around player than some of the first basemen in the HOF.(including Helton)

To me he’s one of the most worthy of the HOF players from that era that isn’t in
Akin to Graig Nettles, Bobby Grich, Lou Whitaker, Dwight Evans , etc.
      A leader ✌️
When he’s traded from the Cards to the Mets it changes the entire math of the NL East
Whitney Herzog - Hey I love Whitey ! - But he must have with his sense known it was his personal worst call in gettin rid of Hernandez -
And to their main rival and direct competitor ! Ouch !
The Cards had dominated the early 80s along with the Phillies (winning the series in 80 and losing it in 83)
The cards win in 82 and runner up in 85 and 87 (one bad call from winning in 85)
Now for the rest of the 80s the Cards have to deal with the Mets first and foremost
With the Mets winning the East in 86 and 88and the series in 86
One way I know Mex was on the Mets before the 85 Series is that terrible call in the 6th game of the series
followed by Jack Clark (who could hit when not hurt )at first base for the Cardinals missing that foul ball near a dugout (think it was the KC one ).
I’m thinking: Mex Has that one and St. Louis wins their second series in 4 years :)
That’d be worth an Ozzie back flip.
Even a Mets fan can appreciate a rival like the Cards. ✌️
      (Maybe better than anyone ;)

To this day, Keith Hernandez is the best fielding first baseman I've ever seen. He's perhaps the only first baseman ever who anchored the infield. I remember when the Mets traded for him in 1983. It took little time for Mets fans to see the professionalism, the things that Ed Lynch was referring to. Sure enough, the 1984 season saw the Mets improve by 22 games, becoming a pennant contender. While having Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, and other very talented young players helped tremendously, having a player the caliber of Hernandez was the critical lynch pin to this improvement, which culminated in a World Series victory in 1986. By the way, under the playoff criteria of today, the Mets would have been a wildcard team in 1984 and 1985.

Former MLB pitcher and General Manager Ed Lynch did an online Q&A. And here is one of the exchanges:
_Questioner: Do you think Keith Hernandez should be in the hall of fame?_
_Ed Lynch: I ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY BELIEVE Keith Hernandez belongs in the HOF, no one player of his era not only performed at his level on the field but changed the culture of an entire Organization in the clubhouse like he did._
That is a direct quote, by the way. Ed Lynch used all those caps, not me.

I remember a play when Hernandez was still with the Cardinals. Hernandez was covering first on a grounder. The throw to first was high, so Hernandez had to jump up and reach up high to catch it. Meanwhile the runner was almost to first, and Hernandez knew that if he waited for gravity to bring him back down to the bag, the runner would just barely be safe. So as soon as he caught the throw, he quickly swung his glove hand down and tagged the runner out, while still in the air. I remember seeing that play live on TV, and I remember that they showed several slow-motion replays. I was disappointed not to see it here in this compilation.

June 14, 1987.... Mets Phillies. We're enjoying a beautiful afternoon
in the right field stands when a crucial Hernandez error to a five run Phillies
ninth. Cost the Mets the game.
Our day was ruined. There was a lot of people, you know, they were
waiting by the player's parking lot. Now we're coming down the ramp ... Newman was in front of me. Keith
was coming toward us, as he passes Newman turns and says, " Nice game pretty
boy.". Keith continued past us up the ramp.
A second later, something happened that changed us in a deep and
profound way front that day forward.....
